First Lady Hosts Nigerian Super Falcons at State House Following World Cup Exit.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, extended a gracious welcome to the Super Falcons, Nigeria's national women's football team, at the State House in Abuja. The reception took place just one week after the team's valiant exit from the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The First Lady warmly received the players, along with their technical staff and officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). She commended the team for their exceptional display of dedication, resilience, and team spirit, which showcased the very essence of Nigeria's character.

Despite a hard-fought battle, the Nigerian side reached the round of 16 in the 2023 Women's World Cup, only to be narrowly defeated by England's Lionesses in a tense penalty shootout. The President's wife, in her tribute to the players, acknowledged their remarkable representation of Nigeria on the global stage and highlighted the world's recognition of their skill and determination.

Addressing the players, the First Lady shared, "Although the final score on the field may not have favored us, remember that victory transcends mere numbers. Your unwavering spirit and unity are the true markers of success." Her words, relayed through her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, emphasized the importance of the team's impact beyond the scoreboard.

"Your presence on the global stage has not only represented Nigeria but has also inspired our youth, particularly young girls who now see their aspirations mirrored in you," she added, acknowledging the Super Falcons' role model status.

In a show of solidarity, she lauded the team's efforts and expressed pride in their achievements, saying, "I salute you today and welcome you back home. Our goodwill and best wishes extend to the players who have returned to their respective bases. You gave your all, and we stand united with you. We are immensely proud of you."

Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the NFF, extended gratitude to the First Lady for her warm reception. He reassured her that the players would continue to exemplify Nigeria through their skill and commitment on the field.

On behalf of the team, the captain, Onome, affirmed their relentless determination to make the country proud. She pledged to persistently press forward in their pursuit of excellence in football.

The reception of the players was a collective effort, with the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, and the wife of the Senate President, Ekaette Akpabio, joining the First Lady in welcoming the Super Falcons.

This event marked a significant gesture of appreciation and encouragement to the Super Falcons, recognizing their outstanding representation of Nigeria and their ongoing dedication to achieving football excellence on the global stage.
