The Member of the House of Representatives representing Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) federal constituency, Hon. Akin Rotimi, Jr., has felicitated with youth of the constituency on the occasion of International Youth Day, commending them for the crucial role they are playing in the development of the communities in the constituency.
According to Hon. Rotimi: "Nigerian youth are over 70% of the entire population, and it is in our strategic interest as a country to prioritise addressing issues that affect them. It is also crucial that we continue to work on ensuring our youth have greater opportunities for representation in politics and governance. I recognise the role of youth in the constituency in earning this mandate to serve and remain committed to leading efforts to protect the interests of young people via progressive legislative action and constituency outreach."
International Youth Day is marked annually across the world on August 12, and is designated by the United Nations as an awareness day to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000. The theme for this year's observance is "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World". According to the United Nations: "Today, the world is embarking on a green transition. The shift towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is critical not only for responding to the global climate crisis but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A successful transition towards a greener world will depend on the development of green skills in the population. Green skills are “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society”.
Further, Hon. Rotimi stated that this year's theme is a call to action, and underscores the potential role of youth in sustainable development and confronting climate change and its impact, if empowered and provided the enabling environment. He concluded by calling on all stakeholders to support young people to be at the forefront of building a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable world, saying our future depends on our youth.
