Breaking the Jinx: Governor Oyebanji’s Historic Rise as Ekiti APC Consensus Candidate.

Breaking the Jinx: Governor Oyebanji’s Historic Rise as Ekiti APC Consensus Candidate.
By Mary Oso-Omotosho

In a move that has sent ripples across the political landscape of Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji  (BAO) has emerged as the consensus candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the recently concluded gubernatorial primary of the party. In a political arena where “consensus candidate” often seems like a mythical creature, BAO has not just captured the nomination; he’s shattered the proverbial glass ceiling, making history in a way that has some politicos wondering if they should consult a soothsayer.

Let’s rewind the clock for a moment. Historically, the APC primaries in Ekiti have been marred with drama—think reality TV, only with more at stake. Factions, intrigue, and the occasional plot twist have defined previous contests. However, BAO’s ascension as a consensus candidate marks the first time in the annals of Ekiti APC that the party has coherently rallied behind a single name without the usual melodramatic. It is indeed a “koseleri” kind of incidence!

So, what’s behind this newfound harmony, you would ask? For one, BAO is a man of the people—a narrative supported by a robust community engagement strategy that has endeared him to Ekiti's citizens. From his early days in local governance to his recent time as Governor, he’s embraced grassroots initiatives, all delivered with a charming grin reminiscent of your favourite uncle at a family reunion. If there were an award for knowing your constituents’ names, BAO would have a shelf full of trophies.

It is worth noting too that Governor Oyebanji has a remarkable knack for listening—yes, actually listening. In a world full of talkers, he’s become the “go-to guy “ for party grievances, making him a sort of political therapist. His ability to understand different viewpoints and blend them into a coherent vision has proved valuable during party gatherings. Picture a diplomatic superhero, cape fluttering, riding into the room just when tensions flare. That’s BAO!

But BAO’s rise as a consensus candidate isn’t solely about charm and community. It’s been a combination of smart handling of political issues and stakeholders management . In a political climate rife with competition, BAO managed to create an environment where party stakeholders felt heard and valued. He wielded consensus-building like a skilled game master, turning potential rivalries into alliances.

Now, here comes the fun part: calling him the “jinx breaker.” In every story of failure in politics, there’s a jinx—a narrative thread of bad luck, factionalism, or just plain old misunderstandings. BAO has dived right into the land of myth-making (because let’s be real, every good story needs a hero) and emerged unscathed. His ability to unite various factions within his party and outside his party has broken the jinx that’s held Ekiti politics in a grip of endless competitions and rivalries. He’s the political equivalent of a lucky charm, bringing good vibes and a fresh aura to a party that desperately needed a turnaround of this kind. The aura is so unique that even opposition parties root for him!

Let’s not also forget that his pragmatic approach thrived amidst a time marked by political fatigue and public disillusionment. People were tired of showdowns and power plays; they craved stability, continuity and direction, defying the politiricks and political jingoism played by some disgruntled lot. BAO stepped up, and voilĂ ! The jinx was broken. In a twist worthy of a TV show finale, all the awkward family members (or should I say party factions) agreed, “Hey, this guy is the best we have for now!”

Moreover, the timing of his emergence as a consensus candidate is crucial. Political analysts would tell you that it’s all about finding the right moment. In BAO's case, that moment coincided with a desire among party members for stability. Like a soothing balm on a political wound, he’s become the candidate who not only promises, but has been leading with inclusiveness and a commitment to progress.

As we look ahead towards the gubernatorial elections with BAO at the helm, the atmosphere is filled with anticipation and excitement, no doubt. Some may ask ,”can BAO maintain this newfound unity as he heads into the campaign? Will he be the one to finally bring the proverbial jinx in Ekiti politics to a close for good?

Well, one thing is clear: Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has not only made history as the consensus candidate, but he has also become the jinx breaker in the eyes of his supporters, and yes , he is possibly setting a new tone for the future of Ekiti State politics. And let’s just say this—the only narrative we want to follow now is a story of unity, progress and continuity .

BAO’s ability to turn what once felt like a harsh political sitcom into uncharted territory of unity puts him in the spotlight as a beacon of what’s possible! BAO certainly has the potential to astonish us all!

cheers to Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, the jinx breaker, who has managed to turn consensus into a winning formula! Let us raise our glasses (or perhaps bowls of hot pounded yam) to celebrate BAO’s history-making feat,

Ekiti Kete , BAO is coming again!

According to him, Governor Oyebanji’s emergence through a peaceful consensus process demonstrates the growing unity and political maturity within the Ekiti APC, while also reflecting the confidence of party stakeholders in his ability to deliver more dividends of democracy.

“I join the good people of Ekiti State and members of our great party, the APC, in congratulating His Excellency, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, on his emergence as the consensus candidate for the 2026 governorship election. This victory is well-deserved and a clear endorsement of his remarkable performance and commitment to inclusive governance,” Lawal stated.

He commended the APC leadership at both national and state levels for ensuring a smooth, transparent, and rancour-free process, adding that such political harmony is crucial for sustained development in the state.

“Governor Oyebanji has proven himself to be a true servant-leader whose policies and programmes continue to touch lives across Ekiti. His humility, accessibility, and commitment to progress have endeared him to many,” he added.

The exercise, which was supervised by a 10-member committee led by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, saw delegates from all 16 local government areas endorse Oyebanji’s candidacy after the voluntary withdrawal of the only other cleared aspirant, Mrs Atinuke Omolayo.

With the consensus affirmation, the governor is now set to lead the APC into the 2026 governorship election as its standard-bearer.

There was wild jubilation and excitement in Ekiti State, on Monday, as  Governor Biodun Oyebanji emerged the governorship candidate of the  All Progressives Congress (APC), for the June 20, 2026 election.

Oyebanji emerged through affirmation of his candidacy, by 885 delegates, drawn from the 177 wards across the statutory 16 local government areas of the State, at the venue of the primary, held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado/Ekiti, the State Capital.

In an event involving 885 card- carrying APC delegates, the motion for affirmation was moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, pursuant to section 84, subsection 11 of the Electoral Act 2022, and was seconded by the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye.

The motion was affirmed by all the delegates with a thunderous voice vote.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Oyebanji, who was overwhelmed with joy, promised to break the second term jinx and as well upscale performance by vigorously pursuing his shared prosperity agenda that will dismantle poverty and wanton neglect from the State.

Oyebanji appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allowing internal democracy to grow in the party, while also commending the party for the honour of being elected as the candidate. He also expressed appreciation to the Progressive Governors Forum , led by the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, for their solid support.

In an extreme show of political maturity, Oyebanji spread the olive branch to the disqualified aspirant, Engr Kayode Ojo, with open heart and readiness to work with him, saying he begrudged nobody, particularly those who have taken different positions on the governorship primary.

The Ekiti Governor  urged the party members  to return to their wards and work hard, warning that people shouldn't be complacent, nor take Ekiti people for granted as the June 20, 2026 governorship election approaches.

The Governor reminded that  every politics is local, which he said makes it imperative for APC members to solidly connect with the people and mobilise ahead of the impending poll.

"Silver or gold, we have none. But we promise to deliver on the contract we signed with our people.  We will continue do those things that will make our people happy and project our party, APC positively in Ekiti State.

"I have been around for nearly three decades as an active participant in the politics of Ekiti State. I can say without any fear of contradictions that this is the first time in our history, that a ruling party will be presenting a candidate by consensus.

"This is a historic moment in our political development, and  it signals a major metric of political maturity and a trend towards stability that our State began in 2022. The inglorious experience of the party in the past is that the progressive bloc in Ekiti had always turned a moment like this to endless schism and damaging polarization.

"The fight-to--finish, internal rancour, dissection, party factionalization and division down the line, ultimately always partly led to our defeats during second term elections. I am glad that we have broken this jinx", he said.

Oyebanji thanked  Mrs Atinuke Omolayo, for displaying magnanimity, sportsmanship and maturity, by voluntarily withdrew from the race without any pressure, branding the  singular act as a manifestation of her maturity, discipline and strong belief in the APC’s internal democratic process.

"To Engr, Kayode Ojo, I extend my hands of fellowship and cooperation going forward. I earnestly look to working with both of you to ensure total victory for our party in the coming Governorship and Presidential elections.

"My appreciation also goes to former Governors, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and his wife Erelu Angela Adebayo, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and his wife Erelu Bisi Fayemi, former Deputy Governors – Professor Modupe Adelabu,  Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, the National Assembly Caucus under the leadership of Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, the Ekiti State House of Assembly members for their support and solidarity".

Speaking about the gains of consensus , Oyebanji, said: "Consensus that we are doing today shows a signal of our political  maturity and that the party has every reason to be grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for laying a solid foundation for our democratic growth.

"The era of negative comments and divisive rhetorics is over. This is a template of unity, a template of understanding and template of political maturity. We have experienced in the past when divisions, rancour, serious acrimony and dangerous polarisation often made us lose second term within the progressive party.

"As we approach this election, let us work together and win together. I have always maintained that there is no victor, no vanquished, we have all won together. I thank you most sincerely for this honour and I promise that I will never disappoint you", he said.

The consensus process, supervised  by the governors of  Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, and Edo State Governor , Senator Monday Okpebholo, was described as credible and fully aligned with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and  the Electoral Laws .

A female governorship aspirant, Mrs Atinuke Omolayo, announced her withdrawal from the race, thereby clearing the hurdles, sequel to the disqualification of two other aspirants, Engr. Kayode Ojo and Olajumoke Adeniyi, for not meeting the APC's nomination criteria.

In her submission, Mrs Omolayo, said: "I stand here today to confirm my withdrawal from the governorship race. My action is based on the fact that the Governor has done well and deserves second term. We should give him another chance to work harder and deliver for the good people of Ekiti State. No ambition should be taken personal, it must be in the interest of the people".

Announcing the result of the affirmation by the Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, put the motion to "I" and "Nay" votes and the delegates all thundered "I", thereby ratifying the process.

Governor Ododo, who doubles as the Chairman of the Affirmation Congress Committee, denied that the affirmation was a product of imposition, saying this action wasn't antithetical to democratic norms.

The Kogi State Governor, applauded the party stakeholders for working hard to deliver a seamless process that could produce a candidate that can deliver for the party, saying the template laid in Ekiti will go down in history as removing the hurdle of unnecessary and fierce competition that could lead to killings and maiming within a political system.

Governor Ododo appreciated the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for displaying highest point of professionalism in monitoring the process to set a template that will be acceptable nationwide.

"This consensus mode of electing a candidate according to the law is not a product of imposition, but a mutual understanding among stakeholders. This is not in any way an exclusion, but a call to duty. With Governor Oyebanji  as our candidate, we are sure of victory in 2026.

"Our party is a party that respects the constitution and the electoral law. We didn't jump any process. You could all see that we have fulfilled  all legal and laid down procedures of our party. Consensus process is being laid here in Ekiti State as an acceptable electoral process that can help our democratic system.

"Having fulfilled all legal and procedures laid down by our party and the constitution,. Governor Biodun Oyebanji, is hereby affirmed as the consensus candidate of our party in the governorship election of June 20,2026".

Presenting the party's flag to Oyebanji, Governor Ododo, saluted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Prof Nentawe Yilwadta-led National Working Committee of the APC for giving them the opportunity to prosecute the national assignment.

The Executive Chairman of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, Honourable Oluwatuyi Oluwagbenga, has objectively assessed the just-concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary election in Ekiti State, describing the process as a clear reflection of the party’s commitment to constitutional order, transparency, and internal democracy.

He commended the APC family in Ekiti for “standing firmly by the truth, equity, and collective will of the people” in endorsing Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) as the consensus candidate ahead of the 2026 election, noting that the Governor was not imposed on the party but earned the confidence of members through proven performance, inclusiveness, and selfless service.

According to Hon. Oluwatuyi, “Governor Oyebanji has distinguished himself as a bridge-builder and reform-minded leader whose administration continues to transform Ekiti State in visible and pragmatic dimensions.”

He outlined some of the Governor’s notable achievements that have inspired citizens’ renewed confidence, including:

Massive road infrastructure renewal, with over 30 major roads constructed or rehabilitated across the state — including the Ado–Iworoko–Ifaki dual carriageway and several township roads that now ease mobility and promote commerce.

Unprecedented progress in healthcare, through the renovation and equipping of general hospitals, revitalisation of primary healthcare centres in all wards, and the introduction of accessible health insurance schemes for residents.

Agricultural revolution and youth empowerment, under initiatives like “Youth in Commercial Agriculture Development” and the Ounje Ekiti food market scheme, which have enhanced food security, reduced unemployment, and encouraged youth participation in agribusiness.

Prioritisation of workers’ welfare, with consistent salary and pension payments, clearing of gratuity arrears, and provision of transport shuttles and housing support for civil servants.

Commitment to education and human capital development, through classroom renovations, recruitment of teachers, and grants for young entrepreneurs across the 16 local government areas.

Hon. Oluwatuyi further commended the peaceful and carnival-like atmosphere of the primary election, which he described as a celebration of unity and loyalty. “Delegates across the 177 wards danced in jubilation — not because of imposition, but because of conviction, shared belief, and genuine appreciation of the Governor’s people-oriented governance,” he stated.

He urged all APC members to rally behind Governor Oyebanji and the Deputy Governor, Chief Mrs Monisade Afuye, while also embracing love, peace, and maturity toward political opponents. He cautioned against the antics of those attempting to sow seeds of discord within the party for selfish ends.

The Council Boss also charged the good people of Igede-Ekiti and Awo-Ekiti to give their full support to Governor Oyebanji in the forthcoming 2026 election, assuring them that the continuation of the administration would guarantee the completion of ongoing projects and open doors for more developmental interventions.

Hon. Oluwatuyi concluded that the consensus affirmation of Governor Oyebanji was a testament to divine ordination and the Governor’s unwavering dedication to breaking economic, infrastructural, agricultural, and political barriers in Ekiti State.
