Ekiti Govt Expands Broiler Production Scheme, Targets 50,000 Birds.

Ekiti Govt Expands Broiler Production Scheme, Targets 50,000 Birds.                                  By Olamide Akinwumi.

The Ekiti State Government has announced an expansion of the Ekiti Broiler Production Scheme (EBOPS), raising its production target from 30,000 to 50,000 birds starting in April. This move aims to strengthen youth involvement in agribusiness and boost poultry production across the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Boluwade Ebenezer, who disclosed this, praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his unwavering support in making the program a success.

“We sincerely appreciate Mr. Governor for his commitment to youth empowerment and food security in Ekiti. His support has been instrumental in the achievements recorded so far,” Boluwade said.

At the close of Cohort 2, Cycle 2, the program recorded an average Return on Investment (ROI) of around 30%, with a mortality rate of less than 5%. The performance was influenced by key factors such as feed conversion rate, sorting efficiency during culling, and other external conditions.

The local market is also gradually expanding, with about 20% of the birds sold directly to individuals. Officials noted that the upcoming poultry processing plant would be a game changer for the entire poultry value chain in Ekiti.

“As you are aware, we made about N20 million from the 20,000 birds raised in Cycle 1. With the addition of the processing plant, we expect even greater profitability and sustainability,” Boluwade added.

To accommodate the increased production, the state government is activating new hubs and upgrading existing ones. The breakdown includes:

●Efon Alaaye Hub – 10,000 birds

●Erinfun Hub – Increased from 10,000 to 16,000 birds with two new pens

●Technical College, Ado – 4,000 birds

The government has invited interested youths from Efon Local Government Area to register with the Ministries of Agriculture or Youth Development to participate in the scheme.

EBOPS is designed to create agripreneurs by providing hands-on training and business opportunities in poultry farming. According to officials, the youths fully own the process and take home 100% of the profit.

“Ekiti is committed to creating jobs and wealth through agribusiness. The future of agriculture in the state looks promising,” the commissioner stated.

With the expansion, the government hopes to position Ekiti as a leading hub for poultry farming, empowering youths and boosting economic growth in the sector.
