Rivers crisis: Pro-Fubara Speaker resigns, writes INEC.

The factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, has resigned his membership in the state legislature.

Ehie is the leader of the four-man group of lawmakers loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, since the political crisis broke out in the state.

Ehie’s resignation was contained in a letter carrying the insignia of the Speaker and the state logo.

It was addressed to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and dated December 29, 2023.

No reason was given for his resignation.

It read: “This is to formally notify you of my voluntary resignation as Speaker and member of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly representing Ahoada-East Constituency 2 with effect from the date of this letter.

“I wish to deeply appreciate my colleagues and the people of my constituency for the rare opportunity to serve and hope to continue to give my utmost best in service to Rivers State subsequently.

“Kindly accept the assurances of my highest esteem at all times.”

It was reported that the factional Speaker had maintained an unusual silence since the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the Rivers political crisis.

Fubara had said he would implement the resolutions reached at the Abuja meeting despite the belief by many that the resolutions were skewed against him in favour of his estranged political godfather and predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
