Oyebanji Boosts Food Production with Distribution of Seeds to Ekiti Farmers.
By Olamide Akinwumi.

Ekiti State Governor,  Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has reiterated his administration's commitment to enhancing food production across Ekiti State.

As part of efforts to ensure food security, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Boluwaji Ebenezer, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Ebenezer Babatope Ojo, led a team to Erio Ekiti on Tuesday to distribute tomato, vegetable, and cucumber seeds to farmers ahead of the rainy season.

The initiative aligns with Governor Oyebanji's vision of agricultural rehabilitation and providing resources to support farmers in boosting productivity.

Speaking during the visit, Hon. Ebenezer emphasized the government's focus on empowering farmers through various programs, mechanization, and other support initiatives aimed at revitalizing agriculture in the state.

He said, “This distribution is part of the administration's broader plan to ensure that farmers have access to the necessary resources to increase food production and strengthen food security in Ekiti.”

Governor Oyebanji's leadership continues to inspire progress in the agricultural sector, as evidenced by the implementation of strategic programs to empower farmers and improve mechanized farming practices.

Residents and stakeholders across the state have lauded the administration's efforts, affirming that Ekiti's agricultural sector is thriving under the governor’s watch.

With Governor Oyebanji at the helm, Ekiti State is steadily advancing towards achieving sustainable food security.

Kayode Fayemi at 60: A Profile In Courage and Determination.

Kayode Fayemi at 60: A Profile In Courage and Determination.
By Raheem Akingbolu

As he sat inside the plane and his thoughts hovering between trepidation and confidence, John Kayode Fayemi, then a veritable tool to the then National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, was in Nigeria as part of efforts to set up the now defunct Radio Kudirat, the guerrilla radio station that was an irritant to the despotic regime of the late General Sani Abacha.

Fayemi was just 32 years old then. But he was acting like a 62 years old. Nigerians knew so little about him then. But he was an irreplaceable asset to the movement for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. Fayemi happened in Nigeria when the nation was in dire need of men to stand up to the Abacha junta.

Olusegun Obasanjo, Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Beko Ransome-Kuti, Sina Malaolu, Lawan Gwadabe, Chris Anyanwu, George Mba (journalist with TELL magazine) and a host of others were in jail on trumped up charges of planning a putsch against the Abacha regime.

Hounded into exile were the likes of Professor Wole Soyinka, Chief Anthony Enahoro and the current president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Fast forward to December 1997. Oladipo Diya, Lieutenant-General and Abacha's number two, was arrested on the 20th of that month of December for, wait again, planning a coup against the despot who happened to be his boss. He was not alone. Generals Tajudeen Olanrewaju and Abdulkarim Adisa, were also rounded up. Colonel Seun Fadipe, Professor Muyiwa Odekunle and others in that category made the list of the 'coupists'.

Meanwhile, Senator Olabiyi Durojaye, Chief Olu Falae, a former Minister of Finance and one time Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, a medic turned pro-democracy activist as well as one time governor of old Kano State, late Abubakar Rimi, were in detention.

These were old political war horses who Abacha threw into jail. 32 year-old Fayemi knew what awaited him as he sat inside that plane that night if Abacha good could lay their hands on him. He knew he was on a suicide mission. He knew he was toying with possible extermination. It was like daring the lion in his territory. A lion that fed on the blood of its subjects and using their bones as a walking stick.

But the heart of this young Nigerian was made of stone. Personal safety was secondary. He had stepped out of the comfort and political as well as personal protection the United Kingdom guaranteed him. But his nation needed him. After all, the woman the guerrilla radio was named after, Kudirat Olayinka Abiola, had paid the supreme price in the cause of trying to save the country from Abacha. And she was not alone. The list reeked of Alfred Rewane, a consummate businessman whose offence was being "naive" enough to bankroll the activities of NADECO. The old man, 79, then was popularly known as the 'Osibakoro'. Sired via the progressive loins of Warri, he was an asset to the nation. But Abacha and his good considered him dispensable. Such was the recklessness and incredible penchant for sucking the blood of its own which the Abacha regime was known for. There was Sola Omatsola, an aviation top hand decimated on his way from work. Can one also forget Chief (Mrs) Bisoye Tejuosho, mother of Oba Adedapo Tejuosho?
Late Senator Abraham Adesanya and late Alex Ibru (who was at the time Abacha's Internal Affairs Minister. Ibru was a successful media mogul whose newspaper, THE GUARDIAN, would not be thrown into the disposal of the regime as an unofficial trumpeter.
He nearly paid with his life when Abacha good opened fire on him on the streets of Lagos.

Those times were like the biblical perilous times when even the most strong-hearted cringed when death was advertised on their faces. But our Fayemi survived those times. The reason could be fatal and at the same time tactical. Perhaps, Mother Nature, the one who sees the future even when the present has not taken shape, knew Nigeria would be needing Fayemi beyond planting a guerrilla radio. His fatherland would need him beyond pro-democracy activism.

Perhaps, it was unknown then, but even if the despot was eventually booted out and consigned into the putrid stench of the dust bin of history, competent hands with unquestionable democratic credentials needed to take leadership positions in the post-military era.

And that was why, in 2005, Fayemi was thrust into the limelight of politicking with an onerous responsibility of saving his native state of Ekiti from the hands of another democratic despot who was running the state, not just like a personal fiefdom but like a conquered territory. A state known for nobility and unquestionable integrity became a but if jokes from outsiders who felt with all its vaunted educational superiority could have done better in its leadership recruitment. Not even when the man they voted out was a certain suave and cosmopolitan Niyi Adebayo. The man who succeeded him did not only elevate brigandage into statecraft as he trampled on real and imagined adversaries. As the state bled, he seemed untouchable.

Fayemi was the man thrust into the ring of political uncertainty even when the bloods of the likes of Dr. Daramola and Seun Omojola were yet to dry from the ground on which their promising lives were garroted like a condemned soul thrown into the guillotine.

Even his immediate family feared for his safety. Not the least his wife who felt her hubby was being set up for a certain death.
But this dude, Fayemi, had seen greater and more intense battles. The man who dared Abacha and came to plant a guerrilla radio when such an expedition was a suicidal one would not be fazed with a misguided minion who was thrust to a position he probably never dreamt off. Fayemi soldiered on and picked the ticket of the now defunct Action Congress, AC. But little did he know that the greater battle that would weary him, both in body and soul, was still ahead.
His belief was that he had done enough to convince his compatriots on April 14, 2007 to entrust their political destiny into his hands by making him their governor. But anti-democratic forces had other ideas. Not only was what happened a tantamount to daylight robbery, but a glaring dance on the wounded graves of the founding fathers of the state.

It is debatable if the ruling People's Democratic Party, PDP, knew who they were messing with in John Kayode Fayemi. On the morning after the electoral heist, he told his crestfallen supporters that he would do whatever it would take, legally, to recover his stolen mandate.

He was not joking. He had seen tougher battles before. He had braved death and looked at the devil in the face and dared him to do his worst. He knew what lay ahead. He knew what he was up against. The greatest consolation, however, was that he was a war Trojan. His doctoral degree in War Studies was not just for theory alone. He had put it into practice in those dark days of the goggled one. Then was the time to dust up his arsenal and go to war, albeit without firing a single bullet.

Fayemi's approach to solving issues and dealing with struggles has always been steeped in intellectualisation of those issues. He would never descend low into throwing brickbats. He would fight with ideas while his adversaries fight with violence. And ideas have always won.

It was not until October 2010 that he recovered his stolen mandate. That was just five months into another election cycle. But his doggedness and steadfastness not only encouraged his teaming supporters, but have also inspired many across the country and beyond. Not many people believe he could pull it through. But he did. Such was the stuff the this man was made of.

When Fayemi recovered his stolen mandate in 2010, he was just 45! But many would not argue if a total stranger thought he was 65. Such was his carriage as a leader and profile as a fighter: Bruised. Fatigued. Wounded. But he fought on because he wanted to write history. And he was fully aware that the history of any war is never written by losers or those who died in the war. It is always written by winners. And that is why history is being written by him today as he clocks 60 because he has always been a winner.

The electoral setback of 2014 did not deter him. He felt he had done enough to earn a second term on office. But some forces felt otherwise and he rightly questioned the then emerging sociology in the state. But, again, nature was preparing him for another battle which he also won: the 2015 electoral victory of the then opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
Fayemi was neck deep in the campaign and, as usual, he brought his usual candour and intellectualism into play as the APC became the first opposition party to win election against a ruling party in Nigerian history.

In 2018, he launched a political come back that left his opponents spellbound. He returned as the governor of the state and when he completed his four years, he handed the baton to another competent hand, Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), who has been building on Fayemi's ineffaceable records in office.

And as he marks his 60th birthday, the nation has no choice than to celebrate this great son of Africa!

While restating his commitment to the scheduled deadlines for the delivery of all on-going projects, the Governor said his government is set to flag off new projects as contained in the 2025 budgets, hence the need to ensure timely delivery of the ongoing ones, which he said were designed to improve the living conditions of the people and enhance economic development of the state.

Ekiti Govt Restates Commitment to Tackle Land Grabbing, Encroachment in Communities.

Ekiti Govt Restates Commitment to Tackle Land Grabbing, Encroachment in Communities.
…..wades into Araromi, Osi, Iropora boundary crisis.

The Ekiti State Government, has warned perpetrators of land grabbing and boundary encroachments in the communities to be wary of their actions, saying the government won’t spare those identified as notorious offenders in the state.

Exuding commitment to tackle the menace and foster peace and unity, the government, said forceful land acquisition and trespass often brew insurrection, enmity and bloodshed, insisting that such won’t be allowed to rear their ugly heads in the state.

The Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, handed down the warning in Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday, while mediating in a land tussle among Iropora, Osi and Araromi Ekiti, in Irepodun/ Ifelodun, Ido/Osi and Ijero Local Government Areas of the State respectively.

The stakeholders’ engagement stemmed from separate petitions written by the communities over alleged brazen and recurrent cases of land encroachments and land grabbing in some sections of the towns by some families.

Speaking at the troubleshooting parley, Mrs Afuye, in a statement signed by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje, appealed to the towns to embrace the spirit of give and take in the resolution of the matter.

Mrs Afuye stated that Governor Biodun Oyebanji wont tolerate bloodshed or bedlam in any community over boundary dispute that can be resolved amicably with exhibition of open minds by all parties.

“What we want in Ekiti State is peace. The Ekiti State Boundary Dispute Resolution Technical Committee will visit the place and determine the actual boundaries among you.

“This matter had lingered for too long. It started in 1971. It resurfaced again in 1991, before it escalated in 2021. We must be careful in dealing with such issue.

“It is wrong for us to start fighting over land, but what belongs to others should not be encroached upon. If you need lands, you can acquire them legitimately by paying or through lease option. Don’t hijack it, Ekiti won’t tolerate land grabbing under any guise”.

In his submission, the Ekiti State Surveyor General, Surveyor Adebayo Faleto, revealed that his officers had visited the contentious areas, which he believed can be easily demarcated if the two towns can imbibe give and take spirit.

“We have been to this portion of land, they can be resolved easily. But in doing this, we need your cooperation. Let your people show element of commitment to the resolution of the matter, this is the only way we can do it and the spirit of give and take must come into play, this is very essential”, he stated.

In their separate responses, the Oniropora of Iropora, Oba Joel Olonibua, the Olosi of Osi Ekiti, Oba Steve Alabi and the Alararomi of Araromi Ekiti, Oba Adebomi Babalola, consented that they would join hands together to help the government to resolve the matter amicably.

They said the three communities are so contiguous that there shouldn’t be any crisis among them, saying their people had inter-married and interwoven to a proportion that they can no longer engage in inter- communal land tussle that could lead to bloodshed.

Defending their rights to ownership of the land under contention, the duo of Olosi, Oba Alabi and Alararomi, Oba Babalola, reiterated that the two communities shared boundaries at Agiripa Forest, saying Iropora never had any land in the area.

The monarchs also urged the government to emphasize the fact that the status quo should be maintained as earlier ordered, meaning that all the farmers operating on the lands should vacate pending the resolution of the matter.

Countering the monarchs’ position, the Oniropora, Oba Olonibua, said the land his neighbours were claiming belonged to his community from time immemorial.

The traditional ruler also denied the accusation raised that his palace was collecting royalty from the occupants of the land.

Gov. Oyebanji seeks stronger military cooperation to combat crime in Ekiti.

Gov. Oyebanji seeks stronger military cooperation to combat crime in Ekiti.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has charged the Nigerian Army to deepen collaboration with other security agencies in the state to strengthen security and eliminate criminal elements in the state.

The Governor gave the charge on Tuesday while receiving the new Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery, Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, Brigadier-General Justin Ifeanyi, who was on a courtesy visit to his office in Ado- Ekiti. He added that such collaboration and military presence would complement efforts of other security operatives already working in the state.

Governor Oyebanji, said the existing synergy among security Chiefs in the State has helped the state to maintain its reputation as the most peaceful state in Nigeria. He urged the newly posted Brigade Commander to uphold and build on existing cooperation among the security agencies which has fostered effective intelligence sharing and effective joint operations.

Speaking further, Governor Oyebanji said while the state enjoys relative peace, pockets of criminal activities still persist. This, he said, underscored the importance of a united approach to tackle the challenges and ensure that criminal elements are flushed out of the state, allowing citizens to live and work safely.

Reiterating the commitment of his government to maintaining the state’s status as the safest in the country, the Governor assured the new Brigade Commander of his administration’s support to ensure that he succeeds in his new role.

“As a government, we are grateful to the Nigerian Army, your sacrifices, your gallantry in ensuring that we have a secured country, without your efforts it would have been worse than this, we are extremely grateful for this. Like you said, this is not a strange terrain to you, you have been here before and I am happy you are the one they are bringing back here.

“One thing I can assure you, is that you will have our support and total cooperation, and to also plead with you, Ekiti State has been adjudged to be the most peaceful state in the country, but we still have some criminal elements around but the beauty of Ekiti situation is that there is a kind of synergy between all the security Chiefs in the state, they work hand in hand, share intelligence, share information. I just plead with the new Commander to ensure that we deepen this cooperation between the Nigerian Army and other sister security agencies in the state”. The Governor said.

Earlier in his remarks, the new Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General Justin Infeanyi said the purpose of the visit was to formally introduce himself to the Governor and assure him that the Nigerian Army will intensify its efforts to combat criminal activities and ensure peace across the state.

Also at the meeting were, Secretary to the State Government, Prof Habibat Adubiaro, Chief of Staff, Mr Oyeniyi Adebayo; Special Adviser on security, Brigadier - Gen Ebenezer Ogundana (Rtd), Special Adviser (Media), Mr Yinka Oyebode; Garrison Commander, Col Kyari Babakura, Operation Officer, Ekiti State, Captain Daniel Yusuf.

DAWN Commission Honours JKF at 60, Applauds His Role in Regional Development.

DAWN Commission Honours JKF at 60, Applauds His Role in Regional Development.
…As SWDC Urged to Focus on Rail, Power, Energy Transition.

The Director General of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, Dr ‘Seye Oyeleye, has commended the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr Kayode Fayemi, for his instrumental role in the establishment of the Commission. He noted that DAWN, which was conceived as a policy and strategy hub for regional integration, will now serve as a think tank for the newly established Southwest Development Commission (SWDC).

Speaking in Ibadan on Monday at a roundtable marking Dr Fayemi’s 60th birthday, Oyeleye emphasised the importance of celebrating individuals whose contributions have significantly shaped governance and regional cooperation. He stated, “This conference is a recognition of Dr Fayemi’s commitment to regional integration and his role in setting up DAWN Commission, which will now help guide SWDC’s strategy. Unfortunately, we live in a society where we celebrate the wrong and overlook the right.”

Dr Fayemi, a two-term governor of Ekiti State and a founding member of the Afenifere Renewal Group, has long championed policies aimed at advancing regional development. His tenure as Minister of Solid Minerals also saw significant reforms in the sector, further reinforcing his legacy in national development.

The conference focused on the relevance of SWDC in fostering economic growth and regional cooperation.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Remi Aiyede of the University of Ibadan stressed the need for structured intergovernmental relations to drive the regional development agenda of President Tinubu’s administration.

Professor Aiyede further highlighted that regional development commissions should not be seen as mere political instruments but as mechanisms for fostering multi-level governance. He urged policymakers to ensure these commissions function as engines for sustainable economic progress rather than political compensation tools.

The Chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group and the Yoruba Academy, Wale Oshun, also spoke at the event, stressing that SWDC must remain apolitical if it is to achieve its core developmental objectives.

Oshun, a former Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, argued that partisanship would only derail its mission and limit its ability to deliver long-term benefits to the region.

Participants at the conference unanimously agreed that SWDC should focus on large-scale projects with a lasting regional impact. They urged the commission to prioritise investments in rail infrastructure, power, and energy transition rather than engaging in micro-scale projects such as road rehabilitation, classroom construction, and borehole installation.

Accountability and human resources were also identified as critical success factors for SWDC. The need for transparent governance, skilled professionals, and clear performance benchmarks was emphasised to ensure the commission effectively fulfils its mandate.

In his response, Dr Fayemi reflected on the journey towards establishing DAWN Commission and the milestones achieved so far. He expressed satisfaction with the renewed commitment to regional collaboration and called for sustained dialogue and partnerships in addressing shared challenges.

Dr. Fayemi, therefore, urged stakeholders to move beyond competition and focus on collective progress, stating that “true development is only possible when we work together with a common purpose.” His remarks reinforced the broader consensus that regional integration remains crucial for long-term economic transformation in the Southwest.
