He will be proceeding to the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, for a Master’s degree programme in Governance, Development and Public Policy.

Governor Oyebanji in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Yinka Oyebode, hailed Owolabi for the remarkable feat, describing it as a befitting reward for his  demonstrated diligence, brilliance and commitment to professional and academic excellence.

How Oyebanji Won the Hearts of Ekiti Pensioners.

How Oyebanji Won the Hearts of Ekiti Pensioners.
By Raheem Akingbolu

With the recent disbursement of N1 billion in gratuities to Ekiti state pensioners, the mood in the  Land of Honour is fast changing as the beneficiaries and their families are rededicating their loyalty to Governor Biodun Oyebanji. Raheem Akingbolu reports.

In Nigeria, words like salary, pension and gratuity evoke strong feelings in the mind of members of the public and they send jitters to the inner marrow of governors. Oftentimes, the country witnesses protests over non-payment of either salaries or gratuities, with governors resorting to blame game or attributing the failure to lean resources.

Under Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State, the reverse has been the case since he assumed office on October 16, 2022.

In the build up to the election that produced Oyebanji, there were varied feedback on the stand of the members of the Ekiti State chapter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners.

While some sources claimed the retirees had vowed not to support the APC candidate, it was also confirmed that a large number among them wanted to give Oyebanji a benefit of the doubt because of his background as a son of one of them who should know where the shoe pinches.

Meanwhile, in his humble manner, Oyebanji kept on pushing while the electioneering campaign was ongoing, by assuring them of his readiness, not only to clear the backlog of their monthly stipends but to give their affair the priority it deserved. From time to time, the governor was also said to have reminded the pensioners and civil servants in the state of his humble background as son of retired teachers and that his education was financed by salaries and deductions like an average child of a civil servant.

True to type, immediately he took over the mantle of leadership, Oyebanji swung into action by distributing gratuity cheques of 130 million naira to retired Local Government workers and Primary School Teachers in the state  restating his administration’s commitment to prioritising  welfare of workers and pensioners in the State. This according to the Governor was in fulfilment of his campaign promises to pensioners in the state.

Later he instructed the State Ministry of Finance to commit N100 million monthly to service outstanding gratuities payment. The amount was recently increased to N200 million monthly. This, he said,  would go while a committee ( comprising of government officials and some executive members of NUP) set up by the Governor would come up with a creative way to offset the outstanding gratuities once and for all.

The other leg of the Governor’s intervention in the plight of the pensioners was his directive that pensions must be paid same time salaries of workers are paid. So, Ekiti pensioners had since 2022 been receiving their monthly pensions same time the state workers receive their monthly salaries.

According to him, the intervention is aimed at providing financial support and recognition to those who have dedicated a significant portion of their lives to public service and education.

Today, Oyebanji’s administration can be attested to be the most worker-friendly administration in the current dispensation in the country. The question that therefore leaves one hazy is how the Governor has been able to live up to expectation when it comes to payment of salaries and still able to attend to capital projects here and there.

Few weeks ago, the Governor did the unexpected when he disbursed N1 billion in gratuities to another batch of 450 state pensioners. The event which was designed as a brief ceremony was turned into a carnival by the pensioners who trooped to the venue in their large number with banners bearing appreciation messages.

The Governor assured the audience at the cheque presentation event held at Jibowu Hall, Government House in Ado Ekiti that his administration would implement the new minimum wage once President Bola Tinubu signs the bill into law, noting that pensioners will also benefit from the minimum wage as well.

Oyebanji disclosed that over N12 billion and N2.3 billion have been paid as pensions and gratuities, respectively, to pensioners in the state since he assumed office in 2022.

The Governor said his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare of senior citizens who had served the state diligently and meritoriously. He said this was his way of appreciating their service to humanity and the growth of the state.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to defraying all outstanding gratuity arrears in the state, assuring the people that his government is working hard to ensure that gratuity arrears become a thing of the past. Government, he said, intends to achieve the goal of a “pay-as-you-go” basis.

The Governor urged public servants in the state to key into the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) recently introduced, which guarantees a more seamless and quicker payment of gratuities.

“As elder statesmen, your welfare is always a priority to this administration, and that is why your monthly pension has been on the first-line charge. I am proud to say that we have paid, in total, the sum of N12,569,562,240.00 in pensions since we assumed office.

“Similarly, this administration has paid a cumulative sum of N2.3 billion as gratuities to our retired senior citizens. This is apart from the gratuity already paid to local government retirees. Today, in this batch, we are paying out a total sum of N1 billion, while continuing with the monthly gratuity payment of N200 million to both state and local government pensioners.”

Speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Dr (Mrs) Folakemi Olomojobi, commended the governor for paying the substantial sum as gratuities to the pensioners, describing the act as unprecedented.

In their separate remarks, the Chairmen of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ekiti State Chapter, Elder Joel Akinola; the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Kolapo Olatunde; the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Sola Adigun; and the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), Comrade Femi Ajoloko, expressed their gratitude to the governor for prioritising the welfare of the pensioners and the entire workforce in the state

Meanwhile, the governor has said what he did was not unusual and that the ultimate objective of his administration is to completely liquidate all gratuity arrears in a short time. He has also promised to ensure that retirees are not left out in the payment of wage awards to Ekiti government workers.

OYEBANJI CONGRATULATES VP SHETTIMA ON 58TH BIRTHDAY.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has congratulated the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, on the occasion of his 58th birthday.

Governor Oyebanji, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, described Vice President Shettima as an eminent statesman in the Nigerian project.

The Governor hailed Vice President Shettima for being a diligent bridge builder, and a national leader who is at home in every part of the country and who is always ready to identify with all Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.

According to him, Vice President Shettima is a detribalised Nigerian, a patriot, a nationalist and a loyal servant of the people imbued with diplomatic skills to support the President in managing a complex country like Nigeria.

Ekiti 2026: I won’t contest guber poll, says Oni.
…endorses Governor Oyebanji.
By Rasaq Ibrahim.

Former Ekiti state governor, Segun Oni, has declared his intention not to contest for the 2026 governorship election in the state.

Oni, who announced his withdrawal from partisan politics for now, said he took the decision after reflecting on the trajectory of his political life and old age.

He announced this on Sunday, September 1, while addressing newsmen in his country home in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ido-Osi Council Area of Ekiti State ahead of his 70th Birthday.

The former governor, who ran for the July 18, 2022, governorship poll in the state under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stated that he had ceased being a member of any political party.

Oni added that his doors are open to any individual or group of individuals for his advice on any issue, assuring that he would respond freely to the best of his ability.

He said: “Here I am, held up with no membership in any party. For now, I’m not interested in joining any political party for now. I don’t think I will re-contest, but nobody knows tomorrow.”

“I don’t have a political party, but I have people, some of whom are here, that I know I still owe. I owe them, even if it’s just advice, and I offer it free because I am now getting older.”

Speaking on governance in Ekiti State, Oni lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his unique leadership style which he said has closed the gap between people and government even more than he did when he was in the saddle.

He said that the governor has revved up the pedals of development in the state, adding that his inclusive approach to governance has further fostered unity and peace in the state, thereby creating an environment conducive to growth and prosperity.

On endorsing Governor Oyebanji for the second term, Oni said: “Of all of us, he has been best at bringing people closer; if that be an endorsement, so be it.

“Let me see those who will line themselves against him, and let me see if there is anyone I will prefer; if there is none, then my endorsement will make better sense then.”

Oyebanji Making Ekiti Best Investment Destination — Deputy Governor.

Oyebanji Making Ekiti Best Investment Destination — Deputy Governor.

The Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, on Saturday, gave a thump up for the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for making the state one of the best and dependable investment destinations in the country.

Mrs Afuye posited that the numerous friendly policies and robust security networks being offered by the current administration accounted for the high and unceasing influx of investors into the state.

Mrs Afuye made the assertion, on Saturday, while commissioning a Resort Centre: Kudis Royal Apartments Limited, established by a young  businessman, Mr. Ademuyiwa Rasheed Ayinde, in Ado Ekiti capital city.

The Deputy Governor, in a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje, maintained that the inauguration of the business outfit confirmed the receptiveness of the Oyebanji's administration to foster seamless working relationship between the public and private sectors.

"I appreciate the initiative of the owner of this business entity and his resolve to site same in Ekiti State to boost business and economic activities that can create wealth and jobs for our teeming population. We appreciate this sense of patriotism and love for our dear state.

"Since the advent of this government, Governor Oyebanji had always reiterated his willingness to create enabling environment to attract intending investors and make the existing ones flourish.

" This accounted for why the government has been creating investment -friendly atmosphere through our good policies. I want to say without doubt that with peace and good policies that we enjoy today, Ekiti remains one of the best destination of choices for investors in Nigeria".

Mrs Afuye assured the owner of this Resort Centre that the government is neither relaxing nor resting on its oars to provide water-forced security system that can protect and  sustain businesses .

"The Governor and the Security Chiefs are  taking copious and relevant  actions to provide security and ward off criminals from our dear state. We are not unaware of the fact that increase in the level of insecurity can erode the viability of any business, so no effort  will be spared to protect investments".

In his response, the Chairman of Ado Ekiti Local Government, Hon. Bosun Osaloni, said good things are happening to Ekiti under this dispensation, because of robust  security and peace being enjoyed under Governor Oyebanji's administration.

The Chief Executive Officer, Kudis Royal Apartments Limited, Mr. Ademuyiwa Rasheed Ayinde, said he decided to open the business outfit in Ekiti owing to his unflagging belief that business can thrive in a peaceful state like Ekiti.

The Abeokuta, Ogun State born business guru, asserted that every responsible citizen should make meaningful contributions to the growth of the economy, saying government doesn't have the limitless financial wherewithal to solely transform the economy.

SAHARA REPORTERS: LOSING THE WAR OF FACTS.

SAHARA REPORTERS: LOSING THE WAR OF FACTS.
_By Segun Dipe_

What does the online publication named Sahara Reporters really want? What is their mission? Or, tearing the veil, what is the publisher, Omoyele Sowore, really getting at? Is Sowore genuinely a journalist or a libeller? These questions beg for answers, yet the answers don't seem to be far fetched.

Sahara Reporters goofs and gaffes at will, yet it parades itself as an online community of international reporters and social advocates dedicated to bringing you commentaries, features, news reports from a Nigerian-African perspective. It locates itself in the United States and prides itself as "A unique organisation, founded in the spirit of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, comprising of people with an overriding commitment to seeking the truth and publishing it without fear favour..." One begins to wonder if this is the true mantra of an online publication notorious for spewing more fiction than fact, not on its domiciled country though, but hauling stones at home from outside, in a catch-me-if-you-can manner.

The Article 19 Sahara Reporters refers to states inter alia that everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, which includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. And for such right, there is also the duty to be factual, not fictional.

Sahara Reporters' claim to investigative journalism rests more on hearsay and jaundiced facts. Its version of criticism of government corruption is grudgery. While the publication would lay claims to having made significant contributions to Nigerian journalism, the " SR journalists" have more than anything else, practised yellow journalism, thus facing much criticism for errors, inaccuracies, and controversies.

Some of the goofs or criticisms levied against Sahara Reporters over time include inaccurate reporting, which has led to series of public apologies and legal disputes, including libel suits and copyright infringement claims. Bias and partisanship, with critics arguing that Sahara Reporters has a political agenda and targets specific individuals or groups unfairly. Sensationalism: The outlet has been accused of prioritizing sensational headlines over fact-based reporting. Lack of transparency, with its non-disclosure of sources or methods, leading to questions about their reporting practice. Staff controversies, resulting in public disagreements and departures of key staff members, raising questions about the outlet's internal governance. The publication's funding and independence had also been queried. Questions were raised about its funding sources and the potential influence this had on its reporting.

Sowore left Nigeria for the United States in 1999 in a controversial way. At the time, he was a student leader and activist at the University of Lagos, where he was involved in anti-government protests and advocacy for human rights and democratic reforms. Due to his activism Sowore allegedly faced persecution and harassment from the Nigerian government, led by General Sani Abacha. He was arrested and detained several times, and, truly or falsely, he claimed to have been injected with lead poison and could only be treated abroad. So his trip to US had to be funded by well-meaning Nigerians.

In 2018, Sowore returned to Nigeria, floated his own political party, with the intention to run for president in the 2019 elections, but his campaign was drudgery, marked by controversies and challenges. He was arrested and detained on charges of treasonable felony. This perhaps further heat up his grudge against government and the people of Nigeria. He felt his people had not been fair to him not to have voted for him. He could not gather majority votes in any community and never can. He thus resorted to the _kaka-k'eku-ma-je-sese_ approach, turning himself to a bull in the china shop. He has since been battling his real and perceived enemies. In his mind the only way to get noticed and become accepted was to trouble every emerging government. Every Nigerian government must be pulled down until Sowore emerges. After all, it's a game of thrones and nothing more!

Here are some specific instances of Sahara Reporters' "goofs" or controversies to date:

1. False report on Buhari's health (2017): Sahara Reporters claimed President Buhari was dead, which was later debunked.
2. Incorrect story on NNPC GMD (2019): They reported the wrong person as the new NNPC GMD, causing confusion.
3. Libel suit from Rivers State Government (2018): Sahara Reporters was sued for N1 billion over a report on alleged corruption.
4. Copyright infringement lawsuit (2020): Sahara Reporters was sued by a journalist for using his work without permission.
5. Retraction and apology to Femi Adesina (2020): Sahara Reporters retracted a story and apologized for false information about President Buhari's spokesperson.
6. Controversy over source protection (2019): Sahara Reporters faced criticism for revealing a source's identity, potentially putting the individual at risk.
7. Criticism for sensationalism (2018): Sahara Reporters was accused of prioritizing clicks over fact-based reporting.
8. Staff departure and public feud (2020): A former staff member publicly criticized the outlet's editorial approach and funding sources.
9. Inaccurate report on EFCC Chairman (2019): Sahara Reporters reported the wrong person as the new EFCC Chairman.
10. Legal battle with Nigerian Army (2019): Sahara Reporters was sued for N1 billion over a report on alleged military corruption.
11. There is a pending libel case against Sahara Reporters in court instituted by Dr. Fayemi.

The list is endless.

And what of Sowore's beef with Ekiti? When did he start and why so? Findings revealed that the beef started with the ex-governor of the state, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi for reasons only Sowore can explain.

The Sowore-Fayemi feud had a complex and contentious history in activism. Both had differing views on how to approach activism. Sowore had publicly accused Fayemi of betraying their activist ideals and collaborating with the government, a claim Fayemi has denied.
Thus, under Sowore's leadership, Sahara Reporters kept lashing at Fayemi, publishing several critical articles laced with falsehood about Fayemi's governance and policies, particularly during his tenure as Ekiti State Governor. Fayemi on the other hand questioned Sowore's commitment to activism, hinting the latter was parading tainted values. According to the ex-Ekiti Governor, Sahara Reporters published by Sowore was biased, publishing inaccurate reporting. As earlier mentioned, Dr Fayemi has instituted a libel case against Sowore, which pends in court as I write. Little wonder Sowore had to transfer the aggression to Fayemi's successor. It's however doubtful if Sowore is mindful of the developmental progress the state is currently making under the present governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, BAO. Does Sahara Reporters care a hoot about development journalism? Theirs is to publish and damn.

As per the recent publication on the award of contracts in Ekiti, Sahara Reporters admitted that they goofed big time, but whether the publication was remorseful about it has yet to be seen. As usual, even when they published a rejoinder to that effect, they still grandstanded about it.

In any case, Sahara Reporters' claim to investigative journalism keeps going south, and the publication has to be gorged for a serious libel at some point. Here are some key points about the Nigerian law on libelous publications:

Section 373 of the Criminal Code Act defines libel as a false and malicious publication that damages a person's reputation thus a criminal offense punishable with imprisonment for up to two years or a fine as provided in Section 375, Criminal Code Act.

As civil action, victims can also sue for damages under Tort of Defamation. The law presumes malice if the publication is false and damages reputation in Section 374, Criminal Code Act.

Some of the defenses Sahara Reporters might have been coming up with include: (i) that the publication is true, (ii) that it is a fair comment or (iii) that the publication enjoys some privilege to write. Only time will tell for how long these defenses will continue to avail erring Sahara Reporters.
