Old, new naira notes remain legal tender, CBN reaffirms.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday restated that all naira denominations remain legal tender.

It directed its branches to continue issuing adequate quantities of both old and redesigned naira notes.

CBN, in a statement by its Director of Corporate Communications, Dr Isa AbdulMumin, said: “Our attention has again been drawn to reports of a scarcity of cash across some major cities in the country despite assurances of sufficient cash stocks in all locations across the country.

“There have also been reports of anxiety among some members of the public over the legality or otherwise of old Naira banknotes.

“For the avoidance of doubt, while reiterating that there are sufficient banknotes across the country for all normal economic activity, we wish to state unambiguously that every banknote issued by the CBN remains legal tender and should not be rejected by anyone, as stipulated in Section 20(5) of the CBN Act, 2007.

“Accordingly, branches of the CBN across the country have been directed to continue to issue different denominations of old and redesigned banknotes in adequate quantities to deposit money banks (DMBs) for onward circulation to bank customers.

“We wish to restate that all denominations of banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) remain legal tender.

“In line with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act, 2007, no one should refuse to accept the Naira as a means of payment.

“Consequently, members of the public are advised to accept all CBN-issued banknotes currently in circulation and guard against panic withdrawals.

“We reaffirm that there is sufficient stock of currency notes to facilitate normal economic activities.”

To further reduce the reliance on physical cash, the CBN called for the adoption of alternative payment methods.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso will brief the House of Representatives on key policy issues today.

Spokesman of the House, Akin Rotimi, said in a statement: “The Sectoral Debate Series is intended to provide political appointees and key government officials an opportunity to brief members about the policies and programmes of their respective MDAs.

“These briefs are scheduled to take place during specific plenary sessions and would go a long way in fostering constructive and transparent dialogue between all arms of government in line with the legislative agenda of the Tenth House of Representatives.”

“Citizens and indeed our constituents are welcome to follow these sessions via our live broadcast platforms to gain perspectives on critical policies that shape the various sectors of our national life.”

Appeal Court declares Lalong winner of Plateau South senatorial election.

Appeal Court declares Lalong winner of Plateau South senatorial election.

The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday upheld the judgment of the tribunal which declared the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong the winner of the Plateau South Senatorial election, the Punch Newspaper is reporting.

Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was announced the winner of the 25 February election with 148,844 votes.

However, Mr Lalong, who scored 91,674 to emerge as the runner-up in the election contested the victory of Mr Bali on the ground that the PDP did not have a proper party structure and, therefore, could not file candidates for the elections.

The Election Petition Tribunal had agreed with Mr Lalong that the PDP, having no structure could not have presented candidates for the election and held that the votes scored by Mr Bali during the election were wasted.

However, the three-man panel of the Appeal Court led by Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu, held that the matter was both a pre and post-election matter, adding that the tribunal made the correct call.

She held that the PDP was wrong not to have obeyed subsisting orders asking that a new congress should be conducted in the state.

“Section 287 of the Nigerian Constitution said all are expected to observe orders of the court. The order was in the realm. It is binding all persons. It is immutable and until it is set aside and must be complied with.

“This issue is hereby resolved against the appellant. Invalidly nominated candidates cannot attract lawful votes. This appeal fails. The tribunal judgment is hereby affirmed,” she held.

Kelvin Power: My real name is Atobiloye Kelvin Kayode; I am from Ondo town and Ekiti State. I am sharing both places because my father is from Ekiti, and I was born in Ondo town; I had my education, formative years and most of my life in Ondo town. And I can speak Ondo dialects fluently that one might think it is the home of my parents.

PT: Speaking of formative years, while growing up, what were your childhood aspirations?

Kelvin Power: Growing up, I have always wanted to be a pride to my family. Whenever they do anything inter-house sports, I would always want to make sure that I would play a role that would identify me differently and bring pride to my parents. That has always been my goal.

And I wanted to just quickly make sure I fed my mother because my mother suffered a lot to raise us. That motivated me to study law, but when I calculated the time I would spend studying law and becoming wealthy and well-established, I realised that for someone of my background, it would take a very long time, and I wanted my mother to be alive and enjoy the fruits of her labour.

So I abandoned law and went into bodybuilding, and for that, I thank God. And honestly, that was the peak of it; I followed my passion, and it brought me good people and good fortune that changed my life. All the good people I have met were always from the gym.
