Tinubu orders action against killers of 16 officers, soldiers.
...Houses razed, community deserted.
....Oborevwori, PANDEF condole with families.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday expressed deep displeasure over the killing of army officers and soldiers on a peace mission in a Delta State community, describing it as a direct affront to the nation.

Outrage greeted the dastardly act yesterday from Nigerians, who viewed the situation as unbecoming.

The military, which expressed indignation, was ordered by the President to fish out the killers and bring them to book.

The President in a statement, he personally signed, directed the military to immediately arrest the perpetrators.

Others who yesterday condemned the killings are Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori; Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Northern Governors’ Forum, Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) and Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of the Ewu Kingdom where Okuoma is located.

A Lieutenant Colonel, two majors, and one captain, along with 12 soldiers and a civilian, were ambushed and killed on Thursday in Okuoma, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The operatives were said to have gone to the Ijaw community to free one Anthony Aboh, an indigene of neighbouring Okoloba, who was allegedly abducted on Wednesday over a land dispute between the two communities.

Residents of Okuoma had reportedly fled in their hundreds before some of their homes were set ablaze.

The Nation gathered that there was a strong military presence in the troubled community.

Condoling with the “families of these fallen soldiers, their colleagues and their loved ones,” the President assured that those behind the “heinous crime will not go unpunished.”

“The Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Staff (Gen. Christopher Musa) have been granted full authority to bring to justice anybody found to have been responsible for this unconscionable crime against the Nigerian people.

“My government will not relent until we achieve peace and tranquillity in every part of Nigeria,” he said.

The President added: “On Saturday morning, the Nigerian people and I woke up to the dreadful news of the unprovoked killing of our brave military personnel during a rescue mission to the Okuoma community of Delta State.

“The incident occurred on Thursday, 14 March, 2024 when our troops, responding to a crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State were ambushed.

“A Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain and 12 soldiers sadly lost their lives. One civilian was also killed.

“As the Commander-in-Chief, I join all well-meaning Nigerians and the men and women of our armed forces to mourn and express my profound grief over the needless death of our gallant soldiers.

“I extend my profound condolences to the families of these fallen soldiers, their colleagues and their loved ones.

“The military high command is already responding to this incident. The cowardly offenders responsible for this heinous crime will not go unpunished.

“This incident, once again, demonstrates the dangers faced by our servicemen and women in the line of duty. I salute their heroism, courage and uncommon grit and patriotism.

“As a nation, we must constantly remember and honour all those who have paid the ultimate price to keep our country safe, strong and united.

“The officers and men who died in the Okuoma community have joined the pantheon of great men and women who gave their all, with honour, in the service of our fatherland.

“Members of our armed forces are at the heart and the core of our nationhood. Any attack on them is a direct attack on our nation. We will not accept this wicked act.

“May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and keep the members of our armed forces safe.”

In Asaba, the Delta State capital, Governor Oborevwori said his government was “gravely disturbed by the killings of the officers and soldiers because the act was as alien to the culture of Deltans”.

Like the President, he commiserated with the families of slain military men.

“This incident is despicable and not in sync with the culture and tradition of Deltans.

“It runs contrary to the values and path of peace that the state government is promoting,” he lamented in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Festus Ahon.

The governor assured that his administration would “take all measures necessary to fish out all those behind this dastardly act and ensure they are made to face the full wrath of the law.”

He appealed to all citizens and residents of the state to remain law-abiding as the government would continue to protect lives and property in the state.

PANDEF, a group led by Chief Edwin Clark, said the killing was “totally unacceptable and must be fully investigated.”

The group also mourned the slain operatives and enjoined the Army and other security agencies not to be deterred by the latest tragedy.

“This dastardly act is unacceptable and must be fully investigated. There must be no sacred cows, the culprits must be brought to book as early as possible.

“PANDEF mourns the slain military personnel and commiserates with all the families and the entire Nigerian Army.

“PANDEF further urges the Nigerian Army and other security personnel around the country to continue with their great national service and not to be deterred by this present sad development,” PANDEF said in a statement by Clark.

Youth groups in Urhobo and Ijaw – IYC Western Zone and UPU – also flayed the incident and called for a probe.

The IYC zone, said in a statement by its Chairman, Doubra Okotete; secretary, Omoghomi Olu-Derimon and Information Officer, Lugard Izuokumor, however, decried reports that Ijaw youths carried out the attack.

Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.- Gen. Tukur Gusau, on Saturday accused youths of Okuoma of being behind the act.

Co-chairman of the Security Committee of UPU, Efe Kigho, described the incident as “not only a clear case of man’s inhumanity to man,” but “repugnant in all ramifications and condemnable.”

He said: “While the attack on military men is not and cannot be acceptable, the ongoing killing of innocent civilians and destruction of Okuoma community can never be justified.”

Kigho also enjoined the Federal and Delta State governments as well as all relevant authorities to “immediately intervene in the ongoing senseless and baseless butchery, carnage, massacre, slaughter and ensure the cessation of all forms of hostilities to enable our displaced innocent mothers and children The Urhobo Media Practitioners Advocacy Group (UMPAG) called for an independent panel of inquiry into the killings.

A statement by its Secretary, Theophilus Onojeghen and an executive member, Shedrack Onitsha, alleged “a grand conspiracy to twist the facts of the bizarre incident to paint one party as savages and adjudge another as saints.”

Commiserating with the military, federal and Delta state governments, UMPAG demanded an “independent investigation and arrest of the culprits.”

It said any panel mandated to probe the incident should unearth the “true mission” of the military personnel in the two communities.

AANI, which also called for the arrest of the killers, said their act “was an unforgivable affront to national values.’’

“AANI stands in solidarity with the military and the families of these heroes who paid the supreme price in the quest for peace in Delta,’’ its National President, Emmanuel Okafor, said.

Monarch, lawmakers demand perpetrators’ arrest
Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of Ewu Kingdom where Okuoma is located, supported the calls for the arrest of perpetrators but appealed for the protection of the community against external aggressors.

Two National Assembly members from Delta State- Joel-Onowakpo Thomas and Nicholas Mutu – called on relevant authorities to tread softly on the incident.

Thomas, who represents Delta South in the Senate, called for a holistic investigation into the crisis and urged the state and federal governments to urgently intervene to prevent it from escalating.

“There is a need for the security agencies to go after the mastermind of the heinous crime.

“There is also the need for the military to tactically deploy intelligence in tracking the mastermind to avoid the killing of innocent people in the Okuoma community.

“I commiserate with the military authority, families of the slain soldiers as well as others who may have lost their loved ones to the crisis.

“I urge the people of Okuoma Community to assist the military to fish out the killers of the gallant soldiers,” he said.

Mutu, a member of the House of Representatives, urged relevant security agencies to work round the clock to fish out the killers.

The lawmaker, however, frowned at what he called purported distortion of facts of the incident

“The Ijaw is not in any way linked or connected to this unjustifiable barbaric and inhuman and condemnable act,” he said

Northern Senators condole Nigerian Army

NSF expressed its sympathies to the “families of the fallen heroes, and the entire Armed Forces” over the death of the “brave personnel.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you, the families of the fallen heroes, and the entire Armed Forces as we honour the sacrifice and service of our brave personnel,” the forum said in a statement by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua.

Customs reopen Kebbi border, warn against smuggling.

The Nigeria Customs Service has reopened the international border in Kamba town, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State for the resumption of cross-border to promote international trading between Nigeria and the neighbouring Niger and Benin Republics.

The Federal Government had last week announced the decision to reopen the nation’s border with the Benin Republic after a seven-month closure.

The decision followed the lifting of the ban imposed on Niger Republic by the Economic Community of West African States following the takeover of power by the military in the country.

The spokesperson for the Kebbi Area Command of the NCS, Mohammed Tajuddeen-Salisu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

“The newly appointed Customs Area Comptroller, Kebbi Command, Mr. Iheanacho Ernest-Ojike, on Friday, reopened the border for international trade as directed by the Comptroller-General of the Customs, Mr. Bashir Adewale-Adeniyi,” the spokesman said.

The statement quoted the command’s comptroller, Ernest-Ojike, as saying the border reopening was aimed at paving the way for legitimate trade that would impact positively on nation building.

“This is not a permission for importation of prohibited items that would ransack the economy and compromise national security,” he said.

“The officers and men of the command are ever-ready to facilitate legitimate trade and act within the ambit of the law to simplify trade across Kamba border,” Ernest-Ojike said.

He said there would be no problems “as long as stakeholders import what is permitted by Customs extant laws, make proper declaration and pay appropriate duties to the Federal Government coffers.”

The District Head of Kamba, Alhaji Mamuda Fana, commended the effort of the Federal Government, saying it was a new ray of hope for his people who had an interest in cross-border businesses, and even small-scale business owners domiciled in the area.

“I promise the Federal Government and the NCS that my people will be cautioned on illegitimate trade and the advantage of reopening of the border to the country,” he promised.

Treble-chasing City eased through to the semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Chelsea needed two stoppage-time goals to beat Championship promotion chasers Leicester 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

United came from 2-1 and 3-2 down to beat Liverpool 4-3 at Old Trafford on Sunday thanks to Amad Diallo’s last-gasp strike in extra time.

United will play Championship side Coventry, who stunned Wolves 3-2 at Molineux on Saturday with two goals in stoppage time.

Florian Wirtz scored after 84 seconds as Bayer Leverkusen made it 38 games unbeaten in all competitions with a 3-2 victory in Freiburg on Sunday.

Leverkusen’s seventh league win on the bounce kept them 10 points clear of serial champions Bayern Munich with eight games to play in their quest for the club’s first ever Bundesliga crown.

“It was a good performance, a deserved victory. It’s not easy to win in Freiburg but we keep going,” Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso told DAZN before praising the performance of his playmaker Wirtz.

“It’s not just the goal he scored, he has a super game. He has real quality and I am very happy for his development.”

Wirtz, one of Leverkusen’s key performers this season, got things moving in style. The Germany forward cut in from the left and unleashed a perfect shot with his right foot, chalking up his seventh league goal of the campaign.

The early goal stunned Freiburg, who came into the game fresh from a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of West Ham in the Europa League, with Leverkusen to face the Londoners in the quarter-final of the competition next month.

Freiburg responded against the run of play though, with Japan forward Ritsu Doan exchanging passes neatly with Lucas Hoeler to drill a low shot beyond the unsighted Lukas Hradecky.

Leverkusen put their noses back in front before half-time though, with Adam Hlozek tapping into an empty net after a mistake by Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

Patrik Schick put the gloss on another convincing victory for Alonso’s team, with a sensational finish to a scintillating Leverkusen counter-attack.

Jeremie Frimpong’s cross from the right was caressed into the top corner by the Czech striker, who was the Leverkusen hero on Thursday with two stoppage-time goals against Qarabag in Europe.

Yannik Keitel pulled one back for Freiburg but the damage was already done, leaving the hosts in ninth and with European qualification slipping away.

In the final game of the weekend, Borussia Dortmund left it late against Eintracht Frankfurt but eventually secured a 3-1 win to stay a point ahead of RB Leipzig in the race for fourth spot.

Dortmund, who beat PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last week to set up a quarter-final showdown against Atletico Madrid, fell behind to a breakaway Frankfurt goal by former hero Mario Goetze in front of the Yellow Wall.

But the hosts struck back through Karim Adeyemi before the break.

Mats Hummels’ diving header from Julian Brandt’s free-kick put Dortmund ahead for the first time in the 81st minute, with Emre Can’s stoppage-time penalty adding the gloss.

“We’ve now won our last four games and go into the international break with a much better feeling than we had two weeks ago,” Hummels said.

“We’re all very satisfied to be in the quarter-finals of the Champions League but, in the Bundesliga, of course we’re lagging behind.”

Pray, stop cursing Nigeria, Sanwo-Olu urges citizens.

Pray, stop cursing Nigeria, Sanwo-Olu urges citizens.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to Nigerians to pray rather than curse the country.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with the government, saying the leaders were committed to turning the situation of the country around.

According to a statement on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, spoke on Saturday at the Lagos Central Mosque 2024 Annual Ramadan Public Lecture.

The lecture had the theme: “The Current Economic Situation: Solution from an Islamic Perspective” in Lagos.

The governor said, “The solution is for us all to come together and pray so that things can be better for our country.

“The reality of things is that the withdrawal of subsidies, which we were all used to over decades, will come with challenges.

“So, my advice is that we sustain what we are doing, be prayerful, and be focused, and I am sure that very soon things will change for the better.”

The guest lecturer, Alfa Agba of Lagos, Sheikh Mujitaba Giwa, advised the Federal Government to decentralise the management of mineral resources.

He said, “Allah has blessed the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with different natural resources; so, why can’t they permit the states to manage their resources instead of the central government allocating its licences to whoever they please?

“Allah tests every nation with five things, namely: fear, hunger, destruction of currency, death, and a bad harvest. But any nation that seeks the face of Allah and does his will is always ready to heal their lands and remove hunger, poverty, and deprivation.

Obi’s call for LP accounts audit not ignored – Spokesman.

Obi’s call for LP accounts audit not ignored – Spokesman.

The leadership of the Labour Party has assured that the recommendation made by its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for a forensic audit to be carried out on LP accounts has not been discarded.

This was confirmed in two separate interviews with the Chief Spokesman for the Labour Party Campaign Organisation, Yunusa Tanko, and the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh.

The clamour for an independent audit firm to probe the party account was prompted after the National Treasurer of LP, Oluchi Oparah, (now suspended) challenged the National Chairman, Julius Abure, to account for an alleged N3.5bn raised from the sale of nomination forms and fundraising activities in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

Opara also accused Abure of refusing to remit the donations received from Nigerians in Diaspora during Obi’s election campaign tour in the United States.

But the Edo politician denied all her allegations when he featured as a guest on Arise News in the wake of the allegation.

Armed with some documents and copies of cheques allegedly signed by the treasurer, Abure lamented that the corruption allegations against him were orchestrated to dent his image.

Wading in, Obi called for an audit of the party’s account to clear the air.

The call by Obi was supported by the 36 state chairmen of the Labour Party.

However, one month after the recommendation was made by Obi and other party stakeholders, nothing was heard about the case again.

When contacted, Tanko reassured our reporter that the matter had not been swept under the carpet as speculated.

He said, “That particular process is still on. What is needed now is just to make the books (account) available and we will take it from there. It is an ongoing issue.

“Don’t also forget that INEC itself has conducted its own audit of the account of every political party. They always send their internal auditors to audit every account and publish the outcome. Nobody is sweeping anything under the carpet as you alleged.”

On his part, Ifoh told our correspondent:

“We must state clearly that our leader Peter Obi made reference to the audit of the campaign account and not the forensic audit for the Labour Party. In any case, we have stated clearly that the party is open to a forensic audit of its accounts.

“We are even calling on the NLC to send its own external auditors to check our financial books. We are also calling on Peter Obi to expedite action on the auditing of our accounts.”

Strike: SSANU, NASU vow to ground varsities, FG feigns ignorance.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities and Allied Institutions will commence a nationwide strike today (Monday), to protest their withheld four months’ salary.

The National President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, informed The PUNCH on Sunday that the two unions were set for their nationwide strike.

But the Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said he was unaware of SSANU/NASU’s planned strike.

In a text message sent to one of our correspondents on Sunday, the minister said, “I am not aware of any planned strike. But I know the matter is receiving attention at the highest level of govt. I will get across to them.”

The Federal Government, implementing the no-work, no-pay policy, had withheld the salaries of university workers following a prolonged strike in 2021.

However, the Federal Government in February released four-month withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but left out SSANU and NASU.

The two unions, in several letters, demanded that their withheld salaries be equally released and gave the Federal Government an ultimatum with a threat to embark on a nationwide strike.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Sunday, the SSANU leader, Ibrahim, said, “The Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU has inundated the Federal Government with the need to pay the withheld four-month salaries of our members in the federal universities and inter-university centres as done for our academic counterpart to no avail.

“As a matter of fact, the attention of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, and Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN, the Honourable Minister of Education, was called to this injustice and unfair treatment of our members in our letter referenced JAC/NS/VOL.I/277 and dated 13th February 2024. We called on them to resolve the issue positively before it leads to an unnecessary upheaval in our university sector.

“In a similar vein, a press release was issued on 1st March 2024 and the Federal Government was given a seven-day ultimatum to do the needful in respect of the payment of the withheld four months’ salaries but nothing was done on the matter.

“Having waited patiently for the ultimatum to expire without any positive response from the government, this is to direct our members in the universities and inter-university centres throughout the country to commence a seven-day warning strike effective Monday, 18th March 2024 in the first instance.”

Also, SSANU National Vice-President, Abdussobur Salaam, said the government had not made any offer to the union since it started the agitation for payment of its withheld salaries.

“We have not heard anything from the government; they are not saying anything about payment of the salaries, no promises, no negotiation. We are not saying they should pay everything at once, at least they should show commitment, talk to us, and tell us when we should expect the payment, but nothing from them, they have been silent even after our warning strike press statement, still, nothing.”
