Suspect who allegedly injected Mohbad not nurse – NANNM

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Lagos State Council, yesterday, said the individual reportedly arrested for injecting the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad is not a registered nurse.

 The association disclosed this in a press statement signed by the State Secretary, Toba Odumosu.

 The association also urged the media to verify the qualifications and professional status of individuals before labelling them as healthcare professionals.

 The 27-year-old singer died on September 12, 2023.

 On September 14, Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, said his son passed away after receiving an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse.

 Aloba said: “According to what I heard from people, I do not believe in that. The only thing I can think of is maybe this auxiliary nurse that used to treat people which is a very bad idea. I do not know the kind of level the woman is.

 ”They said they called her to give him an injection and that is a very bad idea and that injection can result in any length. He had wounds but I do not know the kind of wounds he had.”

 While expressing its condolences to the family of the late singer, the Lagos State Council of NANNM said there is a need for professionalism in reporting and conducting the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

  ”The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Lagos State Council, expresses its deepest condolences to the family and associates of the late musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we mourn his tragic passing.

 ”We fully support the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and urge the relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice for him.

 ”However, we must stress the importance of professionalism in reporting and conducting this investigation. NANNM is closely monitoring the situation with keen interest. Our preliminary investigations indicate that the individual reportedly taken into custody by the police for providing care to Mohbad is not a registered Nurse.

 ”We emphasise the critical need to verify the qualifications and professional status of individuals before labelling them as healthcare professionals,” the statement read in part.

 The council said it is regrettable that Nigeria’s healthcare system faces significant regulatory challenges, leading to the presence of unqualified individuals performing medical roles they are not trained for.

 ”In Nigeria, to be recognised as a Nurse, one must complete a rigorous five-year Bachelor of Nursing Science program at a university, followed by an additional year of internship. Alternatively, one can undergo training at an accredited School/College of Nursing and become registered and licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

 ”We wish to clarify that the term ‘Auxiliary Nurse’ has no place within Nigeria’s healthcare system or its laws. An individual is either a qualified Nurse or an unqualified individual performing tasks beyond their competence.

 ”Furthermore, we call on the investigating authorities and the media to exercise caution and accuracy in their reporting during this investigation. We will not tolerate any misrepresentation of Nurses and the Nursing profession. We demand that all media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a Nurse take immediate corrective action to rectify their stories”, it added.

Anovel scientific work on respiratory technology for keeping newborns alive by Prof Hippolite Amadi has won this year’s edition of The Nigeria Prize for Science.

The announcement was made by the board at a news conference in Lagos.

The award was sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) and it attracts a $100,000 cash prize.

 Amadi is a visiting professor of Medical Engineering and Technology at Imperial College London.

The Prize’s Advisory Board, led by Prof Barth Nnaji, announced the judges’ verdict based on the 2023 theme: “Innovation for Enhancement of Healthcare Therapy” .

Reacting to the verdict, Mr. Andy Odeh, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, said the judges’ decision was a testament to the power of collaboration between the private sector, academia, and the broader scientific community.

He stated that the outcome emphasised the need for collective responsibility to nurture and support innovative solutions that hold the promise of transforming the country, adding that it aligns perfectly with NLNG’s vision of “helping to build a better Nigeria” where ground-breaking ideas flourish, and every life is valued and protected.

 “We are honoured and deeply moved by the judges’ decision to recognise the ground-breaking innovation in respiratory technology that has been awarded the Nigeria Prize for Science in 2023.

 “This invention not only represents a remarkable leap forward in medical science but also serves as a beacon of hope for the most vulnerable among us – our neonates.

 “It reminds us that true progress is measured not only in scientific achievement but in the lives it touches and saves.

“Today, we celebrate the impact that innovation can have in enhancing healthcare therapy and safeguarding the futures of countless new-borns.

 “At NLNG, we are proud to be part of a legacy that puts saving lives at the forefront of scientific pursuit,” Odey said.

 On the judges’ report, Prof Nnaji said the work of Prof Amadi has not only significantly advanced neonatal care in Nigeria and similar countries, it has also improved access and lowered the cost of neonatal care by causing an observed reduction in the market prices of the competing and existing devices.

 “The entry showcased three technological innovations aimed at saving the lives of neonates by making the delivery of oxygen cheap and easy.

 “The first innovation is the non-invasive Neonatal Ventilator, a key invention (The bubble Polite CPAP) for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation of very low-birth-weight neonates, a feasible alternative to the readily available improvised bubble CPAP (IBCPAP) in cost-constrained settings.

 “The second and third innovations are the Oxygen Delivery Blender System, which allows for the safe delivery of oxygen without the danger of toxicity, and the Oxygen Splitter System, which allows for the use of a shared source of oxygen to many neonates at a time, in situations where piped oxygen is not available.

These devices are all solar powered,” he stated.

He added that the devices had been tried by practitioners at various hospitals across Nigeria, noting that there are reports from those hospitals that the innovation, PoliteCPAP, is an improvement on the existing device as it provides access to ventilators and oxygen delivery simultaneously to neonates at an extremely reduced cost of N750,000 as against N6.5 million for the existing device with comparable and better efficiency.

Prof Amadi is a visiting professor of Medical Engineering and Technology at Imperial College London with a special interest in the development of affordable medical systems.

Prior to his work at Imperial College, he was a professor of Medical Technology at Imo State University.

His career spans over three decades, cutting across engineering in healthcare, orthopaedics, and neonatology research. He is also the author of a book “Born to Live, Not to Die.”

The decision on the winning entry was reached by a panel of judges led by Prof Joseph Ahaneku, a Professor of Chemical Pathology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

Other panel members include Prof Olaitan Alice Soyannwo, a professor of Anaesthesia at the University of Ibadan, and  Abdullahi  Abba, a Professor of Medicine and Pulmonology at Ahmadu Bello University. On the prize’s Advisory Board, in addition to Prof  Nnaji, are Chief Dr. Nike Akande, a two-time minister and former President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Prof Yusuf Abubakar, a professor of Animal Breeding and Quantitative Genetics and the Coordinator of the Agriculture Group, R & D Standing Committee, at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed its readiness to shut down economic activities in Lagos State on Monday, 25 September, in protest to the State government’s ban on the operation of its affiliate union, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo made this known to journalists in Abuja on Friday. He said all affiliate unions of TUC, including Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN), Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), and others are expected to join the action.

Osifo said TUC has employed all the necessary tools of engagement for amicable resolution: written letters and held meetings with the Lagos State government. He added that the RTEAN also went to court and got a judgement from the National Industrial Court, which said the State government has no powers to proscribe a trade union legally registered by the Federal government. Yet, the Lagos State government refuses the union to operate.

He, therefore, said TUC will utilise trade union’s powers to protest its affiliate union. He also called on the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Federal government’s body with powers to register and deregister trade unions, to call the Lagos State government to order.

TUC also threatened that if the State government remains adamant after the protest, its affiliates will shut down all federal establishments across Lagos.

“The National Industrial Court Lagos State division, in its judgement told the State government to unlock the offices of RTEAN its official locked. The Court expressly said also that the Lagos State government has no powers to proscribe a registered trade union. However, the Lagos government refused to comply with the judgment.

“On the 4th of September this year, we wrote another letter to the Lagos State government, drawing their attention to the government judgment and the meeting we had earlier with them where they promised that the issue would be resolved, but there was no response. All other attempts to reach the State governor were to no avail.

“In fact, we have even reported the Ministry of Labour and to people in the Federal government that are from Lagos State to call the governor to order. What they are doing to RTEAN is the same thing they now doing to NURTW today. So, this is fundamentally wrong.

“So it is against this backdrop that we said on the 4th of September: within two weeks, if the Lagos government remains adamant in resolving the issue, we are going to carry out a protest, and after the protest and there is no resolution in sight, there is going to be a total shutdown in Lagos State. Because what the State government is doing against a legally registered trade union is not acceptable to us.

“So in order for us to carry out a successful protest in Lagos on Monday, we informed the DG of DSS, IGP, and the National Security Adviser.

The reason is that we want them to provide us with adequate security. And we have informed all our affiliates to proceed to Lagos next week.” Osifo said.

In the heart of Ado-Ekiti, an extraordinary woman, Prophetess Mabel Ajoke Ikudaisi, has devoted her life to faith, divine revelations, and performing astonishing miracles, leaving an enduring imprint on her community.

Early Years of Divine Calling:

Prophetess Ikudaisi's spiritual odyssey commenced during her early years when she discovered her gift for prophecy and revelations. Even as a student at Holy Trinity Primary School in Ikun Akoko and later at Christ Apostolic Church Modern Secondary School in Ire Akari, her divine calling was unmistakable. It was during her secondary school days that she received a profound revelation from a visiting blind prophet at her Anglican Church, setting the stage for her future.

Remarkable Predictions and Challenges:

At the tender age of 8, Prophetess Ikudaisi remarkably predicted the birth of twins for a pregnant woman passing her house, a prophecy that materialized. However, her gift wasn't always greeted with open arms. Often, when she received revelations and prophecies, particularly during intense games of Ayo Olopon in her neighborhood, criticism and threats were her companions.

A Display of Spiritual Prowess:

In 1979, during her time in Benue State, she displayed her divine calling by delivering a child possessed by unclean, satanic spirits, a feat that affirmed her spiritual prowess.

A Journey Through Public Service:

Her journey continued when she joined the Ministry of Lands and Housing in Ondo State in 1979, working in the Town Planning Division as a Technical Assistant for fourteen years. During her tenure, she prophesied accurately about the fates of her colleagues, predicting retirements and layoffs during Governor Bamidele Olomilua's regime. During this period, various prophets confirmed her destiny of establishing her church and marrying a man from Ekiti State.

A Turning Point:

In 1995, a pivotal moment occurred when she revived a woman named 'Iya Seri' from the dead, an event that sparked celebrations throughout the community. Her church soon became a haven for those seeking spiritual guidance and miraculous healing.

A Spiritual Home:

Upon her arrival in Ado-Ekiti in 1979, she contemplated joining the Cherubim and Seraphim Church but ultimately refrained due to doctrinal disparities. Her parents recognized her gift for revelations and prophecies and encouraged her, believing that she would eventually serve God.

Prophetess Ikudaisi's life underwent a significant transformation when she joined the Christ Apostolic Church in 1981. Over the years, she sharpened her abilities and gained a reputation for accurately revealing examination questions to her colleagues, a talent that had its origins in her secondary school days. Her divine calling continued to solidify, culminating in the establishment of her church, Christ Apostolic Church C.A.C. OLORUNGBOGO Ekute Quarter Ado-Ekiti, in 2008.

Miracles and Challenges:

Despite encountering skepticism and facing accusations of employing charms or diabolical powers for miracles, Prophetess Ikudaisi remained steadfast, unmovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord. With the unwavering support of her faithful followers, she embarked on constructing her church building, following divine guidance that transformed it into a duplex.

A Divine Calling:

Also on her calling, she heard a loud voice from rock while on the river, and the Lord asked her to be delivering people falling inside the river.

Healing Waters:

There is a healing water in the church premises as directed by God; The water is a well specifically for spiritual uses, diverse healings, signs, and wonders through this water.

Family and Legacy:

Prophetess Ikudaisi married Pastor Isaac Adelowo Ikudaisi, who shared her surname. Their union was blessed with eight children and seven surviving children—three boys and four girls.

Continuing the Ministry:
