🌼Fact About Iya Olumo: Chief Mrs. Sinatu Aduke Sanni, widely known as ‘Iya Olumo,’ was the custodian of the god inside the famed Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Sanni, also known as the tourism center’s mother goddess, died on Wednesday at the age of 137, according to reports.

Her son, Solomon Adio, confirmed her death, saying his mother died after a brief illness at her Itoko home in Abeokuta.

Olumo Rock, according to legend, was used as a natural stronghold during a long-ago inter-tribal fight.

According to legend, the Egbas became invisible to their attackers after hiding within the rock, and their adversaries sought everywhere for them in order to kill them.

Since then, the Olumo Rock, which saved the Egba people from their enemies, has become a popular tourist destination in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

Sinatu Aduke Sanni has been another tourist draw for many years, since she provided unusual knowledge on the famed Olumo Rock.

She remained the center of attention as she grew older, displaying no signs of exhaustion in her work at the tourist information center.

According to her son, Adio, the doyen spent more than 40 years serving the gods of the rock in one of the enclaves beneath the rock.

“By August 5, Mama will be 138 years old.” After a brief illness, she passed away.

“She was the deity’s mother.” We’re going to miss her terribly. Mama dedicated her life to the rock, to the god. Adio explained, “She was devoted to the gods.”

The elderly woman, however, died just a few months before her 138th birthday.

The name “Ijebu-Ode”, according to history, is a com­bination of the names of two persons namely, AJEBU and OLODE who were conspicuous as leaders of the original settlers and founders of the town. OLODE, was said to be a relative of OLU-IWA, the first Ruler of Ijebu. It is diffi­cult to say for certain which of them {AJEBU and OLODE} preceded the other, but tradition has it that Ajebu, Olode and Ajana met on this land, which was uninhabited dense forest. They consulted Ifa Oracle to determine the actual spot on which each one should make his place of abode.. The Oracle directed that Ajebu should go and settle on a spot now known as IMEPE. 

OLODE and AJANA to remain together at a place known today as ITA AJANA.The grave of Ajebu is still marked by a tomb erected by his descendants at Imepe, near Oyingbo market on the Ejinrin Road. Olode's grave is also marked at Olode Street at Ita Ajana Quarter, Ijebu-Ode. The two persons more conspicu­ous among the original settlers being AJEBU and OLODE.The town derived its name from their names, hence "IJEBU-ODE."

Ijebu-Ode town was divided into two main wards namely, Iwade and Porogun. Iwade was divided into two -- Iwade Oke (also called Ijasi) and Iwade Isale; that is, Upper and Lower Iwade (North and South). By this division, there are three wards in Ijebu-Ode town.That was why the town was spoken of as "Iwade - Porogun, ljasi, Keta" unto this day: Iwade oke, lwade Isale and Porogun. Each . Ward was divided into QUARTERS known as "Ituns.” Iwade Oke has four quarters (Ituns); Iwade Isale has thirteen Ouarters (Ituns) and Porogun has eight Quarters (Ituns), making a total of twenty-five (25) Quarters. 

Each Quarter had its own Quarter Head, who was known as 'Oloritun" - the head man of the Quarter. All of them combined were spoken of, or referred to, as the 'Oloritun Medogbon" (twenty-five Olorituns-- Quarter Heads) and they constituted the ancient and traditional IJEBU-ODE TOWN COUNCIL.

Each Quarter Head represents and expresses the views of the people of his Quarter with whom he holds regular meetings to discuss matters affecting general pub­lic interest. The meetings also serve as tribunals in settling minor civil matters.

1. Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the first individual in the modern era to be named Leader of the Yorubas (Asiwaju Omo Oodua)

2. The richest black woman in the world, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, is an Ijebu woman from Ikorodu, Lagos (waterside Ijebu).

3. Ijebu man was the first Nigerian to play in the English premier league in the early 60s.

4. Ijebu people are famous for Egungun, Agemo, jigbo, Ileya festivals etc.

5. The first people to invent money made from cowry shells, later made Coins called “PANDORO”, which became acceptable through Africa and Europe.

President Buhari Receives Ekiti Gov-Elect, Says Things Getting Better With APC.

The joy of electoral victory was savored at State House, Abuja, Monday, as President Muhammadu Buhari received Governor-elect of Ekiti State, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, in audience.

The newly elected Governor was led to the event by Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Governors Kayode Fayemi, Atiku Bagudu, and Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Ekiti, Kebbi, and Jigawa States, respectively.

President Buhari said he keenly followed the polls held on Saturday, June 18, and was delighted with the orderly conduct, and the way the electorate and security agencies comported themselves.

“I loved how the APC Governors mobilized, and supported you,” the President told Oyebanji. “I think the party is very lucky, and things are getting better. I congratulate the Chairman, and I pray you sustain it.”

Senator Adamu ascribed all the glory for the election victory to God, and pledged that same would be replicated in Osun State next month.

In his capacity as Chairman of the Campaign Council for Ekiti, Gov Badaru congratulated President Buhari on the successful outing, saying; “Your unending effort to reposition the party is paying off. If we combine the votes of the candidates that came second and third, our candidate still beat them by a wide margin. APC is being daily endeared to Nigerians. Our gratitude goes to you, Mr President.” 

The Governor-elect, while appreciating the President said the election was a referendum on the party, “and a clear, positive signal to the election in Osun, and the National one next year. APC is still the party of choice.”

Oyebanji lauded the President “for the leadership and the level playing field you provided,” adding that he would be magnanimous in victory, as earlier advised by President Buhari.

The Chairman, Southern Senator's Forum and Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele has congratulated the Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for his victory at the just concluded Governorship poll.

Describing Oyebanji's victory at the guber poll as a well deserving landslide victory, the federal Lawmaker said both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Governorship candidate are worthy of the massive votes of the electorates in the State.

Senator Bamidele explained that " going by the unmatched performance of the APC-led Fayemi administration in Ekiti State, the giant strides of the Buhari administration in the areas of infrastructural growth, diversification of the economy, the consistent crusade against corruption, the enduring fight against insecurity coupled with the wide acceptability and popularity of Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji among Ekiti people, APC's victory in the just concluded poll is very much expected."

According to the Federal lawmaker, "Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji is the best among all the candidates that contested the Governorship election, given his progressive antecedents, his vast wealth of experience in governance as well as his demonstrated commitment towards the growth and development of Ekiti State over the years."

INEC declares APC’s Biodun Oyebanji as winner of Ekiti governorship election.

Mr Biodun Oyebanji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the winner of Saturday’s Ekiti governorship election.

Declaring the winner, Prof. Oyebode Adebowale, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, said Oyebanji polled a total of 187, 057 to win the election.

He said that Oyebanji had certified the law and was, therefore, declared the winner.

“That I, Prof. Oyebode Adebowale, hereby certified that I am the returning officer of the Ekiti 2022 Governorship Election held on June 18.

“That Biodun Oyebanji, the candidate of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned,” Adebowale declared.

The INEC returning officer, who is also the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, while given the breakdown of the total votes scored by the participating political parties, said that Mr Segun Oni, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, scored 82, 211, to come second.

According to him, others were the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Bisi Kolawole, who polled 67,457; Accord (A) scored 166; African Action Congress (AAC) 409; All Progressives Grand Alliance,(APGA) 17 while Action Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 141 votes.

Also, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) scored 5,597; Allied Peoples Movement (APM) -290; Labour Party (LP) polled 195 votes; New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) scored 529 and National Rescue Movement (NRM) 347.

The rest were, Young Progressives Party (YPP)-618; All Peoples Party (APP) polled 1,980 and Zenith Labour Party,(ZLP) polled 282; Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) polled 856.

According to the INEC Returning Officer, the total numbers of registered voters were 989,224, accredited voters, 363,438, valid votes were, 351865 and voided votes were 8888.

However, the Ekiti South West Local Government area Collation Officer, Prof. Gbolagade Jonathan, said there were issues of ballot snatching at Ward 6 , Units 5 and 7.

Jonathan, while given his reports, said they were about to sort the results when gunmen stormed the affected units and started shooting sporadically making the people run for safety, while they carted away the ballot boxes in the process.

He explained that the two affected units had a total number of accredited voters of 266 and 128 respectively.
