The Management of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, has clarified that the dilapidated Omolayo Hostel trending on social media does not belong to the institution.
A TikTok video showing the abandoned state of the facility recently went viral, sparking concerns among students and members of the public.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Deputy Registrar and Head of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bode Olofinmuagun, stressed that the hostel, though built for students, is located outside the university campus and is not owned by EKSU.
"The attention of the University Management has been drawn to a viral TikTok video showing the sorry state of the Omolayo Hostel. While we are not happy with its dilapidated condition, we must state categorically that the hostel is not the property of Ekiti State University,” Olofinmuagun said.
He, however, acknowledged the contributions of the late Dr. Lawrence Omolayo, the philanthropist who built the facility, describing him as a man whose legacies continue to impact EKSU students.
"No doubt, the University appreciates the philanthropic gesture of the late Dr. Omolayo, who built the hostel. But the Management cannot meddle in the family affairs of the highly respected Omolayo dynasty when it has not been asked to do so,” the statement added.
The institution further indicated its readiness to partner with the Omolayo family should they wish to renovate the facility for the benefit of students.
"The Management of EKSU is willing to collaborate with the family in undertaking repairs on the building, if the family so desires, since the hostel remains one of the enduring legacies of the late Dr. Omolayo,” Olofinmuagun said.
