In a recent interview with BAO Media Centre, Honorable Ebenezer Boluwade, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, shared groundbreaking insights into the state's initiatives aimed at steering youths away from idleness and towards thriving agricultural ventures.
Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji's vision, implemented at the Erinfun Agricultural Center, has sparked a revolution, transforming idle youths into empowered entrepreneurs. Upon assuming office, he recognized the potential lying dormant and swiftly acted to renovate and rejuvenate the agricultural landscape.
Engaging directly with youths, the Ministry used innovative methods such as Google forms to gauge interest in agriculture. Notably, over 3,000 youths expressed interest in poultry, while another 2,000 showed enthusiasm for horticulture.
What sets this initiative apart is its focus on quick cash generation. Boluwade emphasized the profitability of poultry farming, with broilers maturing within a mere 35 days, ensuring swift returns akin to a regular salary.
Through meticulous planning, youths at Erinfun were not just given stipends but were made owners of their profits, instilling a sense of ownership and accountability. Starting with 30 participants, the program has seen remarkable success, with the latest batch reaping profits exceeding N7 million.
One of the key factors contributing to this success is the establishment of a ready-made market through government arrangements. By securing off-take agreements with the local and foreign buyers, youths are provided with a guaranteed market for their produce, eliminating uncertainties and encouraging investment in agriculture.
Governor Oyebanji's strategy extends beyond mere financial support. By leveraging government resources like maize and fostering partnerships with established farmers, youths are provided with everything from training and mentorship to market access, ensuring long-term sustainability and success.
This holistic approach has not only empowered youths to leave the streets but has also created a thriving ecosystem where they can become self-sufficient poultry owners, contributing meaningfully to the agricultural sector and their communities.
