The Candle That Burned the Wrong Way: How Kayode Ojo’s Supporters Lit the Farewell Fire for His Ambition.

The Candle That Burned the Wrong Way: How Kayode Ojo’s Supporters Lit the Farewell Fire for His Ambition.

When people gather for a Candle Night, the world understands what it means. It is a night of remembrance, a symbolic moment when flickers of light pierce through darkness to honour the dead, mourn a loss, or express collective grief. Traditionally, it’s not a festival of mockery or a stage for political rivalry, but a solemn gathering of hearts — united in memory, reflection, or farewell.

That’s why the news of a Candle Night organized by supporters of Engr. Kayode Ojo struck me as both absurd and revealing. It is a desperate theatre of political confusion. Those candles, if truth be told, should have been reserved for the final funeral of Ojo’s political ambition. Because in that very act of lighting candles, his supporters unknowingly announced the symbolic death of their own hope in the current political equation.

They didn’t realize that they were conducting a farewell service for the ambition that has refused to accept reality. In the Nigerian sociopolitical space, a Candle Night is sacred. It’s an emotional ritual that transcends religion or culture — a moment to honour a person’s life. But when a man’s political relevance begins to wane, confusion replaces strategy. And that’s exactly what we are witnessing. The camp of Kayode Ojo seems to have exhausted the language of logic and now resorts to the language of theatre — lighting candles to mourn the death of the ambition of their principal.

You see, there’s something deeply symbolic about fire. It consumes what is already dry. It has no mercy on what has lost moisture and vitality. That’s why this so-called Candle Night may turn out to be a prophetic reflection of the current state of Ojo’s ambition — a dry leaf on the branch of Ekiti politics, waiting for the wind of time to blow it off. The people who carried those candles may not even understand the depth of the irony — that they were, in fact, burning away the last drops of life left in a dream that has lost its rhythm with reality.

Politics in Ekiti has moved on. The people have found stability in continuity and consistency, not in the drama of bitterness or the politics of blackmail. Governor Oyebanji represents that quiet steadiness — the kind that builds gradually and wins confidence over time. The people have come to see through pretenders, those who mistake noise for popularity and confusion for conviction. In every election season, Ekiti has a way of sifting substance from show, and history has consistently humbled those who mistake the crowd of curiosity for genuine support.

The Candle Night by Ojo’s supporters reminds one of a man who calls a press conference to announce his own defeat. It is the loudest way of saying, we have nothing left but symbolism. For a man who once had the chance to build alliances, earn trust, and embody leadership, it is sad to see his movement reduced to candlelight mockery. Instead of lighting the way to progress, they are burning their own credibility in the name of cheap propaganda.

If truth must be told, Ekiti people are not fooled. They know when politics is played with dignity and when desperation wears the robe of relevance. Those flames, whether they like it or not, will only brighten the chance of the governor they sought to ridicule, while exposing the darkness in the hearts of those who plotted the act- for no man lights a candle against another whose sun still shines.

Let us call things by their names. The Candle Night of Ojo’s supporters was not a night of mourning — it was a political confession. A confession that the dream is over. A confession that the movement has lost direction. A confession that they no longer believe in their own candidate’s viability, hence the need to seek attention through a funeral performance. But Ekiti people have long grown weary of theatrics. They now crave development, peace, and leadership rooted in humility and results.

Those candles may burn for a few minutes, but truth outlives fire. The truth is that Oyebanji has not only survived their political mockery but has also emerged stronger in the eyes of the people. And when the flame of a desperate ambition dies out, even the wind of propaganda cannot rekindle it.

So, as those candles melted into wax and smoke filled the air, what the people witnessed was not the death of Oyebanji’s influence, but the symbolic burial of Kayode Ojo’s ambition. The moment they lifted those candles, they were unknowingly lifting the farewell light of a dream that has come to its end.

And if we must borrow the language of the ritual they have desecrated, let us say this — May the political soul of Engr. Kayode Ojo rest in peace. May those who loved his ambition be granted the fortitude to bear the colossal loss. May Ekiti move forward from political theatre to meaningful governance.

Because, truly, that Candle Night was never for Oyebanji — it was a farewell service marking the end of a once promising but now extinguished political journey.

Only Oyebanji Can Secure APC’s Future in Ekiti — OSV Tells Party EXCO.

Only Oyebanji Can Secure APC’s Future in Ekiti — OSV Tells Party EXCO.

A leading grassroots political movement in Ekiti State, the Oyebanji Street Vanguard (OSV), has appealed to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across all levels in the state to retain Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as the party’s flag bearer for the 2026 governorship election, describing him as "the only candidate with the right blend of experience, competence, and political capacity to lead Ekiti into the future."

In an open letter issued on Wednesday, and addressed to all APC State, Local Government, and Ward Executive Council members, the group warned against altering the current political structure, stressing that “no good coach changes a winning team without paying a heavy price.”

The letter, signed by HC Ade, Convener of OSV, came ahead of the APC primary election scheduled to take place in a few weeks.

“We are writing this passionate appeal to remind you that the progress and future of our dear state must remain a top priority. As the party prepares to choose its flag bearer, it is important to consider competence, proven capacity, democratic track record, and the courage to lead,” the group stated.

According to OSV, Governor Oyebanji has continued the legacy of good governance in Ekiti, and his leadership represents stability and continuity at a time when the party needs to consolidate gains and prepare for a landslide re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the 2027 presidential election.

The group also highlighted that virtually all notable progressive political leaders in Ekiti State have thrown their weight behind the continuity agenda. These include Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Engr. Segun Oni, all past deputy governors, current and former National Assembly members, and both former and serving members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

“These leaders have all shown a clear preference for continuity to deepen our democratic culture. Ignoring their collective stance could lead to serious consequences for the party and the state,” the letter read.

The group went on to outline five critical implications of disregarding the calls for continuity under Governor Oyebanji:
1. Discontinuity and disconnection in good governance and the smooth execution of ongoing projects.

2. Immediate political retirement of key national and state-level political leaders whose experience is still vital to the party’s future.

3. Possible overhaul of the existing APC executive structure from state to ward level.

4. Risk of internal disarray within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

5. A major betrayal of trust reposed in the party by the National Working Committee (NWC) and the progressive political bloc in the South-West.

The group described Governor Oyebanji as the only aspirant with "traceable democratic values, leadership stability, and the capacity to unite and energize the APC across the 16 local government areas of the state."

“There is only one person that meets the standard required to fly the flag of our great party in 2026. That person is the incumbent Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji. He has what it takes to continue the good work, keep the party strong, and lead us into another victorious presidential election in 2027 under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the letter added.

In its final remarks, OSV cautioned that political miscalculations at this critical time could cost the party dearly.

“No wise coach changes a winning team. Any attempt to do so will attract a heavy fine of defeat. Let us stay focused, united, and loyal to the path of continuity,” HC Ade concluded.

Ahead of APC Primary: The structure is in favour of BAO.

Ahead of APC Primary: The structure is in favour of BAO.
By Asiwaju Oladimeji

In politics, numbers are key, but they don't materialize out of thin air. The numbers are rooted in the party's structural machinery. Controlling the party structure means controlling the numbers. The APC in Ekiti State has consistently demonstrated this principle. Whether you agree with their approach or not, their strategy has enabled them to navigate internal politics effectively since 1999. The party's structure has been instrumental in producing leaders like Adebayo in 1999, JKF in 2006 and 2018, and BAO in 2022. Today, that same structure remains firmly behind BAO.

It's quite naive to expect a signal from Abuja to alter the course of events. Recent history shows that incumbent governors like Ambode and Obaseki only lost their party's ticket because the local party structures in Lagos and Edo States threw their weight behind other aspirants. Abuja tends to follow the lead of the state structures rather than dictate the outcome.

In 2022, we were assured that KO had Abuja's backing, and we'd be fine. But we saw how that turned out. Abuja came and went, but the party structure ultimately delivered for BAO. Now, some of KO's followers are repeating the same claims, saying he's secured Abuja's support and the ticket is his. My advice to EKO's followers is to manage your expectations. Abuja's influence may rise and fall, but the state party structure has a proven track record of getting what it wants, dating back to 1999.

You may want to ask, what is this structure? In politics, party members often follow influential leaders. Controlling these leaders means controlling the party's structure and numbers. Currently, most leaders who shape party decisions are firmly supporting BAO.

If you're looking for direct primary, just hold tight until October 27th and witness how these leaders will rally their supporters for BAO. That's where EKO's strategy fell short. History will repeat itself - just like in 2022, the same playbook will be used in 2025. Nothing's changed!

Group Congratulate Oyebanji on Approval for Commencement of Commercial flights in Ekiti, says Second Tenure will Foster More Accelerated Development and Prosperity.

Group Congratulate Oyebanji on Approval for Commencement of Commercial flights in Ekiti, says Second Tenure will Foster More Accelerated Development and Prosperity.

The Economic Advancement Frontiers has congratulated the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji on the Approval for commercial flights in Ekiti Airport by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA).

EAF Convener, Mr. Adedeji Oso in a statement made available to the press in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, said Governor Oyebanji's passion for the development of Ekiti and her people is the primary reason the group has thrown its weight behind the Governor for a second term in office.

Oso stated that the approval for commencement of commercial flights in Ekiti Airport will open the state to more economic opportunities, investments and create jobs for residents of the State which is in tandem with the shared prosperity agenda of the Oyebanji's administration.

'It is pertinent for Ekiti people to re-elect Oyebanji to complete the various infrastructural projects ongoing in the state and for broader implementations of policies of his government which has started yielding tremendous progress for Ekiti and improving the state economy.

'Oyebanji's policies, initiatives and programs aligns with the policy document of Ekiti Advancement Frontiers and we salute the Governor for his passion for the development of Ekiti and his dedication to eradicating poverty in the state through agriculture, skills acquisitions, prioritising workers and pensioners welfare amongst others.

'Judging from what we have seen so far in Ekiti in the last three years, Oyebanji's second term will usher in greater developmental projects and economic prosperity for Ekiti and we are rooting for him to conclude his good works'. The statement read.

OYEBANJI: THREE YEARS OF FOCUSED GOVERNANCE.

OYEBANJI: THREE YEARS OF FOCUSED GOVERNANCE.
By Segun Dipe

Writing on the anniversary of a sitting governor could pass for hagiography, especially when written by a publicist from the same political party as the governor. Such writer may be accused of serving a political agenda.

Ordinarily, a party publicist should not be bashful at promoting the activities of the Party on the platform of which the governor ascended. But his job is further made easy when the governor is doing so well that positive appraisals flow in naturally from the citizens he, the publicist, should be selling the Party to. It then means that the people have already bought into the product and no point puffing it. Rather, than selling, he should simply say what is happening and known to all, leaving the discerning public to nod their heads in concurrence.

Moreover, these days, I no longer write long, flowing proses. I simply KISS my piece (Keep It Short and Simple). So as not to be guilty of “asodun” (exaggeration). I fear I would be tampering with the people's patience by wasting words to explain what they already know.

Straightly, it is the third anniversary of Ekiti State Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji's tenure. He is still serving his first term of constitutionally approved two 4-yearly terms. His performance during the first term is his promotion ticket for the second term. If indeed the morning shows the day, the appraisal Oyebanji is getting from the people of the State is an assurance that he has earned his second term.

The dispassionate people of Ekiti State have rated Governor Oyebanji as a high performer. What qualifies him for such rave reviews he has been getting from all and sundry? Here is a thoughtful reflection on the governor's accomplishments and challenges. And I will not stop there. I will go further to offer insights into what his future plans should be and their potential effects on moving our dear State forward.

Some of the notable achievements of Governor Oyebanji in the past three years are in the following areas:

*Fiscal Responsibility:* Governor Oyebanji has not been any reckless with spending. This is confirmed by the consistent ranking of Ekiti State top in fiscal responsibility, budget transparency and civil service reforms. The governor has also strengthened some functional institutions, among them, I could cite the ultra modern Ministry of Works complex at Ajilosun in Ado Ekiti, the State capital, which stands as a symbol of order and efficiency.

*Economic Growth and Infrastructure*: Oyebanji's government has prioritized economic growth, investing in infrastructure development, including road construction and renovation. Over 350 kilometers of roads have been covered, with 126 kilometers completed across all 16 local government areas. Add to this the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport project, which has made significant progress in Oyebanji's time, with the Federal Government granting approval for commercial flight operations effective October 4, 2025. This development is expected to boost the state's economy, particularly in agribusiness, tourism, commerce, and medical tourism.

*Education and Youth Empowerment*: Oyebanji's administration has focused on education, rehabilitating over 1,000 classrooms and constructing 30 new ones. The Smart School initiative at some Government Colleges is another notable project. Additionally, the Ekiti Youth Economic Empowerment Programme (E-YEEP) has provided grants, vocational training, and business support to thousands of young entrepreneurs.

*Healthcare and Agriculture*: Oyebanji's government has revitalized primary healthcare facilities, introduced mobile health initiatives, and improved access to quality care in underserved areas. In agriculture, the administration has supported farmers with inputs, credit, mechanized tools, and guaranteed offtake markets.

*Power and Water Access*: The Ilumoba–Ijesa–Isu to Ikole 33kV line is an example of efforts made at improving electricity supply, while 121 boreholes have been rehabilitated and 110 solar-powered water pumps installed for schools and health centers.

*Food Security*: The Ekiti State Food Security Project, including the Ile-Eye Aggregation Hub and Ounje Ekiti retail outlet, aims to solve post-harvest losses, inadequate storage, hoarding, and exploitation by middlemen.

*Youth Development*: The Bring Back the Youths in Agriculture initiative has provided training and funding for young farmers, while the Ekiti State Agricultural Farm powerhouse focuses on maize and cassava production.

*Security of Lives and Property:* Ekiti State has made significant strides in enhancing security of lives and property, with Governor Biodun Oyebanji's administration implementing various measures to protect lives and property. The state has been recognized as one of the most peaceful in Nigeria, thanks to the governor's proactive approach to addressing security challenges.

I pause here, but must state that these are just very few of the achievements that demonstrate Oyebanji's commitment to Ekiti State's development and his vision for a prosperous future. To confirm their impactfulness, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has earned himself accolades and recognitions from various institutions and organisations for his outstanding leadership and development initiatives in the State.

These awards demonstrate Oyebanji's commitment to delivering impactful, people-oriented projects and his vision for a prosperous Ekiti State:

Some of the notable awards include:
- *Most Outstanding Governor of the Year (Inclusive Leadership and Grassroots Development)*: This award was given by Marketing Edge Magazine in 2024, recognizing Oyebanji's developmental approach to governance, inclusive leadership, and uplifting the standard of living in Ekiti State.
- *Silverbird Man of the Year Award*: Oyebanji won this award in 2024, beating other nominees with the highest number of votes. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant impacts in their respective fields.
- *Vanguard Newspapers' Personality of the Year (Good Governance) Award*: This award was given to Oyebanji in recognition of his commitment to good governance, investment in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and community development.
- *Energy Times Magazine's Energy Governor of the Year Award*: Oyebanji received this award for his efforts in improving the state's energy sector, including reconnecting communities to the national grid and expanding house metering.
- *Governor of the Year 2024*: This award was given by the Nigerian Human Rights Community, recognizing Oyebanji's efforts in promoting human dignity, civil rights, peace building, and sustainable development in Ekiti State.
- *Award of Excellence*: Ekiti State won this award for being the best-performing state in Nigeria on Disease Surveillance at the 4th Annual Disease Surveillance Meeting of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) held in Abuja.
- *Edge Awards Grand Prix*: Oyebanji won this award in 2025, recognizing his administration's commitment to making Ekiti the new investment destination in Nigeria.

Does this then mean that everything is smooth sailing for the governor and there are no challenges? Perish the thought. There surely are some, though surmountable, challenges, and they include:
*Budget Constraints*: Whatever resources available to the governor will always be thrown at endless needs. Managing limited resources and allocating funds effectively has been a significant challenge and will always be.

*Opposition and Criticism*: Gratuitously, the governor has faced opposition and criticism from various stakeholders and he will continue facing it. This requires effective communication and negotiation skills, which are not lacking.

*Balancing Competing Interests*: Gov Oyebanji must continue to balance competing interests and priorities, ensuring that decisions benefit the greater good of the majority.

The people's governor must also keep pursuing these as his future goals:
*Sustainable Development*: Oyebanji must not stop aiming at prioritizing sustainable development, focusing on environmental protection and renewable energy.

*Education and Workforce Development*: Investing in education and workforce development initiatives have been his priority so far, but he can do more to equip the people, especially with youthful ones, with skills for emerging industries.

*Citizens Engagement*: Oyebanji has been doing it and cannot stop enhancing community engagement and participation in decision-making processes to foster a sense of ownership and accountability.

No doubt, three years is long enough to be impactful as Oyebanji has proved to the world and Ekiti people, yet it is not enough to achieve the Ekiti of his dream. As one of those who fought for the creation of the State, he cannot say Ekiti has arrived at its Eldorado. If God had used him at such a tender age to influence the State's creation, he can still be used to further its advancement, whether as a governor or statesman. Ekiti advancement is a journey, not a destination, and it is the concern of all its citizens.

Recall, the development follows the expiration of  the initial approval for a non-scheduled flight approval for the airport by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in December 2024 and compliance with regulatory requirements. The NCAA in the letter dated October 3, 2025 addressed to the Governor of the State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, confirmed the new approval for scheduled flight.

Reacting to the cheering development, Orininowo said Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport represents a model of sub-national innovation that mirrors the renewed national drive for infrastructural integration and economic turnaround.

‘I wholeheartedly congratulate His Excelleny, Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, Dr. Kayode Fayemi who initiated it and the good people of Ekiti State on Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority approval to start commercial flight operations in Ekiti Cargo Airport where people from outside can access Ekiti State for Business and social economic development.
