Ekiti Govt Begins Compensation for Property Owners at Atikankan for Urban Renewal Project.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji will on Monday 20th, May, 2024 flag off payment of compensation to owners of Properties acquired by the State Government for the proposed Urban Renewal project at Atikankan area in Ado Ekiti.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, disclosed that the programme is scheduled for 10am at the mini Pavilion, Fajuyi in Ado Ekiti.

Olatunbosun recalled that the State Government had acquired the area around the swampy fetid shanty slum in the Atikankan neighborhood of Ado Ekiti, the State capital as part of efforts at giving the Central Business District a facelift and addressing inherent challenges bedeviling the area.

Stressing the commitment of the Oyebanji’s administration to the rapid development of the State and improving the lot of the people, Olatunbosun assured that the Oyebanji administration would continue to ensure provision of basic infrastructure and development that will make residents comfortable, improve socio-economic activities as well as attract investors and tourists to the State.

He assured that payment of the compensation would be fair, adequate and prompt to all affected parties, adding that the focus is to rapidly develop the State without negatively affecting the citizenry.

The Government spokesperson solicited the continued support of all and sundry for efforts of the present administration to develop the State and make life more meaningful for the people.

Oyebanji And Politics Of Inclusivity.

Oyebanji And Politics Of Inclusivity.                        By Segun Dipe.

There is this whining coming from some uncoordinated quarters that Governor Biodun Oyebanji, of Ekiti State, codenamed BAO, might have been sidelining the party (APC) echelons in his selection for appointments in the state. This whiners also alleged that the opposition parties were getting an unreasonable chunk at the expense of party faithful.

Those holding this view are perhaps not up to speed with the modern-day democracy. They fail to understand that today's politics abhors a winner-takes-all pattern of victory known to past elections. A winner today cannot afford to take all, else he or she will know no political peace.

Perhaps those clamouring for BAO to embrace the winner-takes-all strategy were also absent during his campaign, prelude to the 2022 governorship election. The sing-song of the APC candidate then was that he would make Ekiti an inclusive State if voted in. That he would bring all Ekitians together without any discrimination. That Ekiti will not be a "we" versus "them" in his time, but a state convenient for all to live and earn their living.

Also, after the election, BAO stretched his arm of fellowship to all other contestants, their political parties and their leaders, regarding them all as part of his government. He also regarded all past governors of the state as his mentors and leaders, and has since been relating with them as such.

https://www.baomediacentre.com/2024/05/18/oyebanji-and-politics-of-inclusivity/

As an advocate of inclusion, BAO believes that “we” includes every citizen regardless of sex, ethnicity, religion, skin colour, or sexual orientation.

Michael Ignatieff, the Canadian human rights scholar, defines the ideal inclusive state as, “a community of equal rights-bearing citizens united in patriotic attachment to a shared set of political practises and values."

The inclusion of all human beings in the political system is the logical corollary of believing that every individual has moral value. The first victory for politics of inclusion, as against politics of resentment is the formal right of citizens, that is, the incorporation, influence and representation of individuals from all social, ethnic, regional and socio-economic group within democratic institutions.

BAO today practises politics of equity, politics of diversity, politics of inclusion and politics of belonging (EDIB). And this has to do with his evolvement as an unusual politician.

Contrary to the known evolution of a politician. BAO was first a statesman before becoming a Governor. A statesman is defined as a skilled, experienced and respected political leader. And how do you refer to someone who was actively involved in the creation of a state? At the formation of Ekiti State, young Oyebanji was the secretary of the committee agitating for the carving out of Ekiti from the old Ondo State, which eventually became a reality. History will be kind to refer to BAO as the youngest founding father of Ekiti State.

Contrary to some criticism that BAO was not a politician and an unwilling governor, he is actually the most prepared Governor Ekiti State has had to date. BAO was not at any point a political rookie. He was qualified and competent to mount the saddle at the time he did. He studied Political Science up to the Masters level, he taught Politics as a course at the university level, and he served under all the progressive governors the state ever had. Yet, he laid claim to no glory when the state took off. He simply withdrew to continue building his career in the corporate world only to be called upon to serve in the government of the first democratic Governor of the state, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and had ever since remained in the corridor of power to learn beyond limits. If such person was not prepared for governance, who then was?

As regards how BAO has been going about his appointments, he has not reneged in his promise of returning political power to the political party. He gives party leaders in each of the 16 Local Governments and 18 LCDAs the power to nominate those they consider fit to represent them in government. They in turn do so through the leaders in each of the 177 wards across the state and they recommend between 2-5 names as occasion warrants and those names go through screening and shortlisting for the various positions at the state or local government levels. Not all, BAO has continually consulted all those who governed the state before him, not minding their party affiliations, he defers to them on matters of governance. His choice of giving them slots in his appointments is also a means of giving them a sense of belonging. In terms of projects, which is a topic for another writing entirely, BAO consults the people on their preferences and prioritises projects that directly impact the lives of the people. His empathy for the needs of the people knows no boundary.

If this is misgovernance, then, the governor's critics should tell the world what their understanding of governance is. If it is lack of political understanding, then BAO is not willing to learn otherwise. He is today's Governor, not that of yester years.

The Governor met with some major players in the sectors including Power Africa and DFC teams to further deepen private sector investments in the State.

The meeting with Power Africa discussed Ekiti’s recently enhanced autonomous regulatory environment, and explored options on how to bring various clean energy solutions to Ekiti State, as part of the Government’s efforts to improve power infrastructure and increase electricity supply in the State.

The meeting with DFC focused on the State’s special economic zones, and looks to crowd in more private sector operators into the Ekiti Knowledge Zone and the Special Agriculture Processing Zone.

Governor Oyebanji said at the end of the meetings that he is optimistic of a huge investment flowing into the state, following expressions of interest by investors.

He said the government has put in place regulatory framework that would protect investments in the state as well as an enabling environment that guarantees growth.

The Governor cited the success stories of CAVISTA Holdings and Promasidor, two major investors who took over moribund assets in the state and turned them around, thereby creating jobs and economic opportunities for the citizens.

While CAVISTA took over the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resorts and turned it into a world class tourist and hospitality entity, Promasidor took over the Ikun Dairy Farm.

The BAO administration is relentless in seeking workable partnerships with investors, development agencies and private players to invest in the state, create opportunities for the citizens in line with its shared prosperity agenda.

Engage Ekiti youths or forfeit Your Job Ekiti Government warns contractors.

Ekiti State government has again warned contractors handling various projects in the state to comply with the local content laws of the State especially on the employment of indigenous skilled labourers and professionals to carry out their jobs.
Director General, Bureau of Local Content in Ekiti State, Olalekan Ijidale said the law stipulates that 40% of Ekiti indigene are expected to be employed by the contractors but noticed that majority of the contractors are not complying.

Ijidale who spoke after a visit to Craneburg site noted that his office would not tolerate a situation where contractors engaged by the state would bring in all their skilled labourers and professionals from outside the state saying such is an aberration and would be resisted.

He said:” I am disappointed this afternoon after getting to the site and noticed that only a very few of our youths are engaged to do ridiculous jobs while majority of the workers on site are non indigenes.
” This attitude is against the Local Content law, I have taken my time to meet with contractors and also visit their sites to educate them on this law but unfortunately, they seems not to be ready to comply.

“We see this action as a deliberate affront against government and we will not tolerate it any longer, Ijidale affirmed.

“We have graduates here who are engineers and have relevant skills in construction and so on, if they are not engaged how would they gather experience, recruiting Ekiti indigenous for menial jobs alone is not acceptable, there must be balance.

“Any Contractor found guilty will surely face the consequence.
According to him, the contracts offered to the contractors are financed by the tax paid by the indigenes of the state hance they can not be left unattended to while strangers come from outside to get what belong to them.
