Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, has recorded another milestone as its students from the Department of Geology clinched the 4th position at the 12th Mini-Conference of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) and the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS).

The competition, which took place between August 28 and 30, 2025, at Kwara State University, Malete, featured oral and poster presentations from 22 universities across Nigeria. At the end of the highly competitive sessions, EKSU emerged 4th behind the University of Ilorin, Federal University of Technology, Minna, and Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.

With this feat, the university outperformed some of Nigeria’s oldest and most respected institutions, including the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Ten 300-level students, alongside two academic staff, represented EKSU at the conference, under the sponsorship of the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation (TOF). The theme of the gathering was: “Bridging the Knowledge Gap: Enhancing Geoscience Education for Sustainable Development.”

The Head of Department of Geology, Prof. Adeyinka Aturamu, who led the delegation, hailed the conference as an “eye-opening experience” for staff and students, noting that it provided ample opportunities to network, share knowledge, and connect with industry experts.

Reacting to the development, EKSU’s Deputy Registrar and Head of Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bode Olofinmuagun, said the university’s performance was a pointer to the institution’s rising profile in research and academic excellence.

“Our students have once again demonstrated that EKSU can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best universities in Nigeria. Securing 4th place in such a competitive environment is no small achievement. We are proud of our students, grateful to the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation for their sponsorship, and thankful to the university management for its consistent support,” Olofinmuagun stated.

He added that the recognition would further motivate EKSU to invest more in quality teaching, research, and exposure for its students.
