In a bid to enhance access to clean and potable water across Ekiti State, the government has approved the immediate rehabilitation of 121 boreholes spread across the 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 22 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). The sum of N159,542,787.33 (one hundred fifty-nine million, five hundred and forty-two thousand, seven hundred and eighty-seven naira, thirty-three kobo) has been allocated for this purpose.
The decision was reached during the recent State Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Council Chamber, New Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024. Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, the State Commissioner for Information, made this announcement, highlighting the government's commitment to improving access to clean water for residents across the state.
The task of rehabilitating the boreholes will be undertaken by the Ekiti State Small Towns, Rural Water Supply, and Sanitation Agency using direct labor. The agency has set a completion target of two weeks for the project, emphasizing the urgency of the initiative to address the water needs of the populace.
This initiative forms part of the Sustainable Urban Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (SURWASH), which is supported by the World Bank under the Performance for Result Financing (P for R) scheme. Under this program, the World Bank will disburse $19.00 per person for the expected over 30,000 citizens who will benefit from the improved water supply.
The rehabilitation of these boreholes underscores the government's commitment to providing essential amenities and improving the quality of life for residents in both urban and rural areas of Ekiti State. With this initiative, the government aims to ensure equitable access to safe and reliable water sources, thereby promoting public health and well-being throughout the state.
