Inaugural Lecture: AAUA Don Identifies How Climate Change Threatens Environmental, Public Health Calls for Science-Driven Solutions, Review of National Building Codes.

A Professor of Climatology at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Oyenike Mary Eludoyin, has identified climate change as an escalating threat to environmental sustainability and public health, urging stronger institutional commitment and science-driven interventions to mitigate its impacts.

She also stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to invest in innovative and adaptive approaches to address rising heat waves and evolving climate conditions in order to mitigate their impacts on agriculture, food security, and public health in pursuit of sustainable development in the country.

Prof. Eludoyin made these assertions on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, while delivering the University's 68th Inaugural Lecture, titled, "The Human Element in the Climate Equation: Navigating Thermal Stress and Environmental Health in a Warming Nigeria."

While also describing the temperature level experienced in the country as a silent and invisible biological crisis, she warned that prompt actions must be taken to avert its debilitating effects saying, “Nigeria must move swiftly from a passive posture of ‘climate victimhood’ to an active stance of ‘climatic agency’.”

Highlighting the increasing severity of climate change and its implications for human well-being, the renowned climatologist observed that the earth's atmosphere has become warmer, heavier, more saturated, and increasingly unpredictable, reflecting the profound effects of global climate change.

She said, “The global climate is warming at a pace that severely outstrips our current infrastructural capacity. Concurrently, our local Nigerian environment is becoming more humid, less ventilated, and progressively stressful to biological life.” 

She noted that her decades of scientific investigations consistently revealed a steady rise in temperature with far-reaching consequences for ecosystems, livelihoods and public health across Nigeria and the world.

Drawing on her academic journey, Prof. Eludoyin stated that the most profound discovery from her years of research was not merely the evidence of rising temperatures but the remarkable capacity of people to adapt and thrive when empowered with scientific knowledge and practical solutions to environmental challenges.

She stressed that addressing climate change requires stronger institutional commitment, strategic collaboration and sustained investment in scientific research. She advocated an enduring partnership between the University, described as ‘the gown,’ and the wider society, ‘the town,’ to ensure that research findings are translated into practical policies and interventions capable of improving the quality of life.

Outlining practical strategies for confronting the climate crisis, the inaugural lecturer called for what she described as an "Architectural Revolution" through a comprehensive review of Nigeria's National Building Codes to incorporate bioclimatic principles.

She noted that the country's growing dependence on imported concrete-and-glass building designs fail to account for Nigeria's tropical climate, natural ventilation patterns and intense solar radiation.

She identified the high temperature conditions as a localised phenomenon not evenly distributed across the country, adding that high-density residential zones, commercial hubs, and paved core of the cities with minimal green spaces prevent efficient ventilation compared to the vegetated outskirts of cities and densely populated towns.

The Don further stated the numerous effects of this environmental challenge, including the farmer’s burden where labourers in certain areas are hindered from working in peak solar hours, compromising regional food security and livelihood of agrarian families; sleepless nights from high nocturnal temperatures resulting in public health crisis; and the economic drain on citizens due to the rising financial cost of artificial cooling, and the loss of physical productivity in its absence which further deepens the cycle of climate-induced poverty marginalisation cycle among households. 

She said "We must pioneer a national cool-roof policy mandating high-albedo, solar-reflective materials to replace heat-trapping corrugated iron sheets, an intervention proven to lower peak indoor temperatures by three to five degrees Celsius and eliminate nocturnal heat entrapment.”

Prof. Eludoyin also advocated the deployment of precision agriculture to support smallholder farmers whose traditional farming calendars have been disrupted by increasingly unpredictable rainfall patterns. She proposed that regional universities should serve as institutional climate hubs, providing timely climate information and scientific support to farming communities.

In addition, she emphasised the need to cultivate what she termed "Urban Green Lungs" by mandating the preservation or development of high-canopy indigenous forest zones covering at least 10 per cent of all new residential, commercial and industrial layouts. Such measures, she explained, would help mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect and improve environmental health.

The Inaugural Lecturer further called for the establishment of robust climate-health surveillance systems, describing climate change as fundamentally a public health crisis that demands coordinated action by environmental, health and policy institutions.

She advocated the establishment of a Climate Change Centre at Adekunle Ajasin University to institutionalize climate change research, strengthen evidence-based policy engagement, and enhance the University's capacity to develop sustainable strategies for protecting vulnerable communities from the adverse impacts of climate change.

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, welcomed guests to the inaugural lecture and reaffirmed the University's commitment to promoting scholarship, cutting-edge research, and knowledge-driven initiatives that contribute meaningfully to national development and societal progress.

Prof. Obamuyi promised to sustain Inaugural Lecture as a core component of University programme in line with Global Best Standards. 

The 68th Inaugural Lecture, the first under the chairmanship of Prof. Obamuyi, attracted dignitaries from all walks of life, including religious and traditional leaders, members of the academia and the University Community, as well as family, friends and well-wishers of the lecturer.

Arch. Tope Ogunleye (RST), has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the decision as a courageous, patriotic and visionary step towards strengthening Nigeria's security and accelerating national development.

According to Arch. Ogunleye, the approval of salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent is more than a welfare package; it is a strategic investment in the nation's peace, stability and prosperity. He noted that by placing the welfare of the military at the centre of his administration's priorities, President Tinubu has demonstrated that the security of lives and property remains the bedrock of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He stressed that the President's intervention would significantly boost the morale, commitment and operational effectiveness of members of the armed forces who continue to make enormous sacrifices in defending Nigeria's territorial integrity and combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

Arch. Ogunleye further observed that no nation can attain meaningful economic growth without a secure environment. He explained that improved security will encourage local and foreign investments, revive agricultural activities, promote commerce, create employment opportunities and guarantee a better quality of life for ordinary Nigerians.

He also commended President Tinubu's resolve to modernise the armed forces through the provision of advanced weapons, technology and improved operational support, noting that a well-equipped and highly motivated military remains indispensable to overcoming contemporary security challenges.

"President Tinubu has once again demonstrated that genuine leadership is about taking bold decisions that place the national interest above every other consideration. Investing in the welfare of our gallant servicemen and women is an investment in the peace, unity and future of Nigeria. When our security personnel are motivated, every Nigerian stands to benefit from a safer environment and a stronger economy," Arch. Ogunleye stated.

He expressed optimism that the President's decisive intervention would further inspire confidence within the armed forces, strengthen public trust in government and reinforce Nigeria's determination to overcome every security challenge on the path to sustainable national development.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has awarded a full scholarship to 14-year old Damilola Adeolu, the SSS1 student who won two gold medals at the World Spelling Bee championship  held in Shanghai, China recently. 

Damilola, a student of St Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado Ekiti, had represented Africa at the world championship, having earlier emerged winner of the National and African Spelling Bee Championships earlier in the year. 

Governor Oyebanji hailed the youngster for her amazing and brilliant performances at the national, Africa and world Spelling Bee Competitions, when he received her, her parents, Rev and Mrs Adeolu, her coach and her school proprietor, Elder Lawrence Oluwafemi at the Governor’s office, Ado Ekiti on Monday. 

Aside the scholarship, Governor Oyebanji also awarded monthly allowances for Damilola’s upkeep and learning facilities, stressing that the State Government would show a greater level of interest in her future much more than the joy of the laurels she has won. 

Governor Oyebanji described  Damilola’s feat as a proud moment for Ekiti, Nigeria and Africa in general, noting that her giant strides would go a long way to inspire other students to dare to be among the best. 

He also reiterated the commitment of his administration to supporting Ekiti youths to compete favorable with their counterparts in any part of the world and providing platforms for them to exhibit their God- given talents. 

The Governor said, “You have made us extremely proud. You have conquered the world, but you need to conquer the future. The future is ahead of you.

To sustain that future, the Governor announced that the state government will underwrite all of Damilola’s educational bills from SS2 through secondary school and university. 

He added that the scholarship will be "all-embracing" and will also cover monthly welfare support and provision of learning materials such as books, computers and other needs.

“I have just discussed with the Commissioner for Education. From now till she finishes secondary school, government will pay. When she gets to university, we will sit down and work that out with you,” the Governor stressed.

Promised to facilitate Damilola’s meeting with the Minister of  Education, and office of the Wife of the President, stressing that her exploits should be celebrated  beyond state level. 

To celebrate the achievement, the Governor announced cash rewards of N2 million for Damilola, N2 million for her school, and N1 million for her coach.

Speaking with Journalists shortly after the event, the Proprietor of the school, Mr Lawrence Oluwafemi highlighted how Damilola emerged as world champion saying she first conquered Nigeria and later represented Nigeria at the African championship where she also emerged first.  He thanked the Ekiti State Governor for sponsoring their trip to Shanghai, China to represent Africa, noting that without the support, the journey would not have been possible.

The Proprietor added that Damilola is not the only star student. “We have a lot of them. She and other students will also be going back to Beijing next year to represent Ekiti, Nigeria, and Africa. “And we are coming back as champions.” He added.

Also speaking with Journalists, Damilola described her experience as "amazing and "wonderful" It was a wonderful experience and I felt very happy and proud of herself when she became one of the gold award medalists.

Damilola thanked the state Governor, Mr Oyebanji for the support she received and promised to continue to do the state proud. She however used the opportunity to encourage other young people to keep on believing and be proud of themselves stating that someday, they will eventually win and make the state and the country proud.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has given approval for a  comprehensive renovation and upgrade of the NYSC Orientation Camp in the state, even as he restated his administration’s unalloyed commitment to youth development. 

Governor Oyebanji disclosed this  during a meeting with the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Ige Adeola ,  in his office on Tuesday, where the state of the camp facilities were discussed. 

Governor Oyebanji noted that the renovation became necessary to ensure that the camp, which serves as the first point of contact for over 6,000 Ekiti Corps Members annually, reflects his administration’s commitment to youth development, excellence and hospitality.

The Governor also promised to solicit support of some eminent citizens of the State to sponsor some projects within the camp. This, he said, will compliment efforts of the State Government and ensure that the orientation camp is comprehensively renovated within a reasonably short period. 

The planned renovation may necessitate the deployment of the next batch of of corp members in October to any of the neighbouring states in order to allow for full concentration on the renovation work at the camp.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development and pledged continued support for NYSC operations in Ekiti State. 

The Governor also commended Corps Members for their contributions to Health, Education and Community Development across the state.

The State Director of NYSC, Mr Ige Adeola had earlier appealed to Governor Oyebanji for urgent intervention in the upgrade of facilities at the Orientation Camp and the State Secretariat as he presented a 3-phase implementation strategy to address the long-standing challenges facing the scheme in the state.

The Director used the opportunity to commend the Governor for his consistent support, particularly the approval of meal subsidies for Corps Members and previous interventions on camp toiletries. He expressed optimism that with the Governor’s intervention, the welfare of Corps Members in Ekiti will be greatly improved. 

Mr Ige hoped that the Corps Members would continue to make significant contributions to Ekiti State in the areas of Health, Education, and Community Development.

Also present at the meeting were the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro; Chief of Staff, Mr Niyi Adebayo; Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Adedayo Gold and Special Adviser, Media, Mr Olayinka Oyebode.

Students of the Ekiti State College of Technology (EKSCOTECH), Ijero-Ekiti, have been charged to take full advantage of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as a platform for acquiring practical skills, professional values and industry experience that will prepare them for successful careers.

The charge was given during the 2025/2026 SIWES Orientation Programme held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Hon. Wumi Ogunlola Hall of the Polytechnic.

Declaring the programme open, the Rector, Dr. Olufemi Olubamise, appreciated the unwavering support of the Polytechnic's Principal Officers towards the steady growth and development of the institution. He also expressed gratitude to the team from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Ondo and Ekiti Zonal Office, for honouring the invitation to enlighten the students.

The Rector commended the Director of SIWES, Dr. Bosede Makanjuola, and her team for successfully putting the orientation programme together. He assured the students of a rewarding industrial attachment experience and encouraged them to pay rapt attention to every session, noting that the knowledge gained would serve as a guide throughout the exercise.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of SIWES, Dr. Bosede Makanjuola, warmly welcomed the Rector, Principal Officers, representatives of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Deans, Heads of Departments, Departmental Supervisors, members of staff and students to the orientation programme.

She explained that the orientation was organised to acquaint students with the objectives, expectations, rules and procedures of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). According to her, the scheme is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical experience, thereby equipping students with the knowledge, skills and professional values required in their various fields of study.

Dr. Makanjuola encouraged all participating students to maximise the opportunity by remaining attentive throughout the programme, adding that the knowledge acquired would contribute significantly to their future careers. She also appreciated the Polytechnic Management, the Industrial Training Fund, guest speakers and everyone who contributed to the success of the programme.

The first orientation lecture focused on the introduction, history and objectives of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the importance of the programme in preparing students for the world of work.

The second session centred on the technical aspects of SIWES, where participants were taken through the proper completion of SIWES documentation, including the SIWES Form, Form 8 and the Log Book. Students were also systematically guided on their responsibilities, the procedures involved in the exercise and the regulations governing the programme from commencement to completion.

The orientation featured two seminar presentations that comprehensively explained the activities of SIWES and the specific roles expected of students at every stage of the scheme. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions, with facilitators providing detailed and practical responses to their enquiries.

Other Principal Officers in attendance included the Deputy Rector (Academics), Dr. Modupe Ogunrinde; the Deputy Rector (Administration), Mrs. Iyabo Oladapo; the Registrar, Mr. Sunday Emmanuel Ayodeji; and the Bursar, Mr. Olaniyi Dada.

The highlight of the programme was the interactive engagement between the facilitators and students, while the Registrar delivered the vote of thanks, appreciating the guest speakers, management and all participants for contributing to the success of the orientation programme.
