Ekiti State Rejects Planned Power Outages: Commissioner Demands Urgent Meeting with TCN, BEDC, NERC.

Ekiti State Rejects Planned Power Outages: Commissioner Demands Urgent Meeting with TCN, BEDC, NERC.

The Ekiti State Government has voiced strong opposition to a planned two-month power disruption proposed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, led by Commissioner Professor Mobolaji Aluko, has called for an immediate suspension of the outages, which are scheduled to last nine hours daily from July 1 to August 31, 2024.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Directors of TCN, BEDC, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Professor Aluko criticized the lack of direct communication with the Ekiti State Ministry and the Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (EKSERB).

He emphasized that the proposed 558 hours of outages would impose an unacceptable economic, financial, and social burden on the residents of Ekiti State.

“We were not consulted on this significant disruption. The planned outages represent an enormous cost to our citizens and local businesses,”Professor Aluko stated.

He called for an urgent meeting on July 2, 2024, to explore less disruptive alternatives for the necessary maintenance work on the 132KV Akure-Osogbo transmission line.

The meeting aims to find a sustainable solution that protects the interests of Ekiti State while allowing for critical infrastructure upgrades.

“We are eager to collaborate on a plan that minimizes the impact on our communities and ensures a continuous power supply during this maintenance period, Professor Aluko added.

He stressed the need for prompt action to address the concerns of Ekiti residents and maintain economic stability in the region.

EKSG Meets Estate Agents to Address Rent Hike.

In response to the growing concerns raised by residents of Ekiti about exorbitant house rents and outrageous increase of rents by property owners in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has taken decisive action to address the issue by initiating an engagement with Estate Agents in the State.

Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji has called for concerted efforts among stakeholders to focus on prevention strategies to combat the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The First Lady made the call on Wednesday at the celebration of this year's edition of the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at the conference hall of her office in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The theme of this year's celebration was "The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention," and the event attracted students, teachers, health professionals, officers from the nation's security agencies, civil society organizations and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Speaking in her capacity as the State Champion Against Drug Abuse and the State Ambassador of War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), the First Lady urged the stakeholders "to take decisive action today, for a healthier, safer and better tomorrow."

Expressing concern that drug abuse and illicit trafficking have become a global menace, Dr. Oyebanji noted that education, awareness, and early prevention, are powerful tools in the fight against the scourge.

She said: "Drug abuse and illicit trafficking pose significant threats to our society, affecting our youth, families, and communities. Evidence shows that investing in prevention not only reduces the prevalence of drug abuse but also fosters healthier, more resilient societies.

"In Ekiti State, we are committed to implementing comprehensive prevention programs that address the root causes of drug abuse. By engaging our youth, educating our communities, and providing support for those at risk, we aim to build a future free from the scourge of drugs.

"I call on all stakeholders—governments, NGOs, communities, and individuals—to join forces and prioritize prevention. Together, we can create an environment where our children can thrive, unburdened by the dangers of drug abuse."

The First Lady brought smiles to the faces of NYSC corps members present at the event when she donated 10 kg packs of rice to each of them saying the gesture was to extend hands of fellowship to them in view of the prevailing economic situation.

The gesture elicited ovation from the corps members who were surprised at the unexpected gift.

In his welcome address, the Ekiti State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Sunday Aina, welcomed the attendees to the event on behalf of the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Marwa (retd.).

Mr. Aina advocated that the war against substance abuse should not be left to NDLEA alone. He therefore called for more vigorous involvement of governments, educational institutions, corporate bodies and civil society organizations for the preservation of the future generation.

The NDLEA boss disclosed that Ekiti is among the states in Nigeria where cannabis sativa, otherwise known as Indian hemp, is cultivated in commercial quantity hence, the need to support the agency to arrest and prosecute producers and sellers of the drug.

Shedding light on the agency's efforts in bringing culprits to justice, Mr. Aina said: "It is worthy to note that between June 2023 to June this year, out of the 250 arrested drug dealers and peddlers, 48 are females, which double the number that was recorded last year.

"The most worrisome and disturbing aspect was the arrest of a 75-year-old Audu Jibril from Oke-Asa Village, Ijero-Ekiti. The command successfully prosecuted and secured convictions for 58 Males and 7 Females, making a total of 65 convictions."

Within the period, the NDLEA boss disclosed that the state command discovered and destroyed cannabis plantations in locations including Efon Alaaye Forest, Ara Forest reserve, Ise Forest, Isinbode Forest, Ijesa Isu Forest and Okatedo Forest in Imesi Ekiti.

He called on members of the public to always volunteer information to NDLEA that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of suspected drug abusers, traffickers and growers of drug plantations.

The guest lecturer at the event, Dr. Adedotun Ajiboye enlisted the support of traditional rulers, religious leaders, leaders of thought, and other influential perons to save the young generation from abuse of psychoactive substances.

Dr. Ajiboye, a clinical psychologist, also canvassed the regulation of the sale of pharmaceuticals in open shops and the implementation of evidence based programmes deliberately primed to curb abuse of drugs in the society especially among the youths.

Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of various stakeholders present at the ceremony.

Expressing confidence at what the state stands to gain by collaborating the stakeholders, the Governor said “We believe strongly that if we have alignment of visions, alignment of minds and unanimity of purpose, the Ekiti that our forefathers fought for, we can achieve it.

According to him, “We are conscious of the burden of history on us, we campaigned for this office, we made promises to the people, we begged them to vote for us, we are not here to complain and we are not complaining. We have accepted this responsibility and we don’t lack the capacity, we don’t lack the ability, we don’t lack the vision, we don’t lack the drive but we can do better than what we are doing with your help, so I’ve come to you today not as a Governor that knows it all, I’ve come to you as someone asking for help”.

“I believe strongly that with you behind us, people will start to have a rethink about who Ekitis are. We are extremely dedicated people, we are hardworking, we are loyal, we are transparent, we are courageous but we don’t have access to opportunities and we lack platforms. But that platform that we lack is what God has provided through you. It is those platforms I’m asking, give us this platform, collaborate with us, assist us so that we can use your network and your platform to develop our people.

” We believe strongly that with our six point agenda in the state today, we are intervening in infrastructure, we are revamping our health care services, we are doing education, free education, we give grants to schools, in the medical sectors we are confronting the problem of infrastructure, the problem of drugs, and we are also combatting the problem with staff.

“We are the second state in the country that has paid hazard allowance. We paid over 14 billion in pension, we are paying gratuities, we have committed 200 million every month to gratuities, we pay salaries as at when due. As of today we are not owing workers salary since we were sworn into office. We have paid arrears of pensions, given promotion arrears, we have paid contributions to our workers and you can call your people at home, we are very faithful when it comes to the issues of pensioners. We pay pensions with salaries and we have not defaulted at all”. The Governor asserted.

Prior to the Governor’s address the Senior Adviser on Economic Matters and Chairman of the Economic Management team, Senator Olu Adetumbi and the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Akin Oyebode, had in separate presentation laid out the State’s economic prospects and challenges, stressing that with more support the citizens, the government would do greater exploits in the area of sustainable development.

Ekiti Government to Sanction Non-Compliant Contractors for Violating Local Content Law.

Ekiti Government to Sanction Non-Compliant Contractors for Violating Local Content Law.

The Director-General of the Bureau of Local Content in Ekiti State, Olalekan Ijidale, announced on Tuesday that the state government will impose sanctions on contractors who fail to comply with the local content law.

Accompanied by the Senior Special Assistant on Local Content Development to the State Governor, Ogunsakin Michael Ayotunde, Ijidale made the statement during an inspection visit to various construction sites in the state.

The Director-General expressed dissatisfaction with one of the contractors for not adhering to the local content law, which requires the employment of at least 40% of Ekiti indigenes as skilled and unskilled workers.

"We conducted a headcount and found that only 13 out of the 69 workers employed for this project are from Ekiti State. This level of compliance is unacceptable, and the Bureau will not hesitate to sanction the contractor," Ijidale said.

He further emphasized that the failure to comply with the 40% local workforce requirement will result in a 5% deduction from the contractor's total contract sum.

Ijidale reiterated the commitment of Governor Biodun Oyebanji to ensuring that 40% of local artisans and materials are utilized in handling various projects, especially construction works, within the state.

"The law clearly states that 40% of Ekiti indigenes must be involved in the execution of contracts in Ekiti State. These are the taxpayers who funded this project, and it is only fair that they be given the opportunity to participate in the process," Ijidale said.

The Director-General warned that the Bureau of Local Content has been empowered by law to enforce compliance and will not tolerate any further violations. He stressed that the government's promise to the people of Ekiti State is to ensure the adequate engagement of local workforce in project execution, and the Bureau will ensure that this promise is upheld.
