The residents of Ondo State are set to enjoy clean and accessible water within the next 18 months, as the French Development Agency (AFD) co-financed water project at the Owena Multipurpose Dam has reached its physical component stage. This announcement was made by Hon. Sunday Akinwalire, the Ondo State Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation, and Hygiene.
The declaration followed the completion of a 3-day Supervision/Monitoring Mission in Akure, the Ondo State capital, which involved the Federal Project Implementation Unit (FPIU), State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF), and AFD. Representatives from the Federal and State Ministries of Finance and Water Resources, alongside the French Development Agency, were in attendance to review the progress of the co-financed water projects.
Kasim Mohammad Nafiu, a representative of the National Project Coordinator from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, expressed satisfaction with the measures taken by the State Government concerning the project.
Mrs. Ada Chukwu, a senior administrative officer with the Federal Ministry of Finance, acknowledged that the project faced delays due to political activities over the past year. However, she noted that the project is now gaining momentum.
Hon. Sunday Akinwalire confirmed that the project, currently in the physical component stage, is on track for completion within the next 18 months. The initiative, which began in 2018, promises significant benefits upon completion.
Engr. Remigus Ogunjobi, the General Manager of Ondo State Water Corporation, highlighted that the soft component of the project has been completed. He emphasized that the physical component will soon commence, ensuring the provision of potable water to the people of Ondo Central Senatorial District in the first phase, with other senatorial districts expected to follow shortly.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of the Ondo State Government and its partners to improving public sanitation and hygiene through the provision of clean and accessible water for its residents.
