Mining to experience major leap in 2024, says Alake.

Mining to experience major leap in 2024, says Alake.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake said Nigeria’s mining sector would experience a major leap in 2024.

Alake said the leap would be towards contributing substantially to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The special assistant on media to the minister, Segun Tomori made this known in a press statement.

According to him, Alake said this in his new year goodwill message to Nigerians.

He added: “Alake reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s vision of diversifying the economy through renewed focus on solid minerals is on course, asserting that reforms in the sector will yield tremendous results in the new year.

“I felicitate Nigerians for making it through 2023 into the year 2024. It is pertinent that we collectively look forward to the horizon of the new year, with renewed hope, especially because it signposts the first fiscal year of the Tinubu administration.

“On our part in the solid minerals development ministry, we will be consolidating on reforms that commenced with our ambitious 7-point agenda, on assumption of office, four months ago. Nigerians are rest assured that an efficient governance structure that will transform the opaque nature of the mining sector will crystallise in the new year.

“It will be recalled that we had revoked 1,633 mining licenses of those that defaulted in the payment of annual service fees last year. More revocation is in the offing for other categories of defaulters in 2024”

“Our plans to tackle the menace of insecurity in mining areas alongside the activities of illegal miners through a rejigged security architecture is well on course. In a short while, we will see the result of months of engagement with heads of security agencies, as we are poised to rout those plundering Nigeria’s mineral resources. “the Minister affirmed.

On exploration, he said: “Efforts on exploration of critical minerals which started last year with the signing of an MOU with German firm, GeoScan GmbH for the deployment of proprietary technology to explore minerals up to 10,000m under the earth will be ramped up with renewed vigour by the federal government.

“This is crucial for the development of the sector as it will lead to the generation of big geo-data required for global players to make informed decisions about investing in the industry,

“Alake further urged Nigerians to keep faith with the Tinubu administration, emphasising that reforms in the mining sector and other areas will jumpstart the real sector and lead to immense jobs and prosperity for all Nigerians.

“We are prioritizing value addition for prospective investors in the mining sector. The era of just carting away our resources is over. We want to see practical plans to develop these raw materials into finished products or plans to add value to host communities before we even license new operators.

“This is pertinent, so that the mining sector can lead the way in industrialization, create massive jobs for our teeming young population, and contribute substantially to economic development in the new year” Alake added

Why we increased 2024 budget, by Reps.

Why we increased 2024 budget, by Reps.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Bichi has explained why the National Assembly increased the 2024 budget from N27.50 trillion to N28.78 trillion.
Bichi also said that the increase was necessitated by the promise from Government Owned Enterprises (GOEs) to increased their revenue generation in the 2024 fiscal year.

The House and the Senate passed a harmonised budget of N28.78 trillion on Saturday, December 30, an increase of about N1.27 trillion over the budget presented by the president.

Bichi explained that revenue-generating agencies have pledged a substantial revenue increase in 2024 to support the budget.

He said: “We had a meeting with the GOEs, we believe that their submissions are not enough. They have agreed to increase their revenue.

“That is how we are able to get that 1.2 trillion which we applied to capital”, Bichi said, adding that the budget increase in the appropriation bill is allocated to the capital component rather than recurrent expenditure.

“I believe this budget is brilliant and Nigerians will see a lot of impacts. This is the first time the capital (component) is bigger than recurrent.”

According to him, citizens made contributions in to the money bill at a one-day town hall meeting organised by the House, while the National Assembly joint committee on appropriations worked closely with the executive to arrive at the budget.

During budget defence early this month, Bichi told Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General (CG) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), to increase the agency’s revenue target for 2024 to N6 trillion from its proposed N5.79 trillion, stressing that the government needs money to finance several projects.

The appropriation committee chairman also urged the Nigerian Upstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to increase its revenue target to N6 trillion from the proposed N5.6.

Anambra pensioners beg Soludo to pay N850m arrears.

Anambra pensioners beg Soludo to pay N850m arrears.

There’s no cause for alarm, gov insists
Anambra State health pensioners have begged the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to pay them 850 million naira arrears owed them by the government after retirement.
The retirees lamented that four of their members had lost their lives as a result of the hardship they were facing.

While appealing to the governor, they used the moment to organize a prayer session for God to touch Soludo’s heart to remember them.

The Chairman of the retired health workers pensioners in the state, Comrade Rafael Okoye, said the problem might not be from Soludo but from his Commissioner for Local Government and Secretary of the Joint Account Allocation Committee JAAC.

He said there was a ‘consent judgement’ delivered by the National Industrial Court in Awka which was signed by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General that 10% of the monthly local government allocation should go to the pensioners.

He explained that rather than commence installment payment as ordered by the court, they reneged on the terms of settlement, claiming lack of funds.

Okoye, said the hardship was instrumental to the death of four of their members, adding that Soludo he knew would love to pay, saying that they believe few persons in his administration were responsible for their present situation.

During the prayer session, the pensioners carried placards with various inscriptions like, ‘Local Government Health Pensioners Are Not Dead Woods or Orphans, They’re Bona-fide Ndi Anambra.’

Others were, ‘Please governor direct JAAC to pay health pensioners as recommended by the Attorney-General and ordered by the court,’ Local Government monthly statutory Allocation is more than N5 billion,’ among others

Okoye said they had 127 Health pensioners who retired from the local government service of Anambra State from January 2015 to December 2019.

He added that they were owed 850 million naira, arising from the inadvertent omission of their names in the implementation of 60% consolidated Health salary structure(CONHESS)

However, one of the government officials who did not want to be mentioned, told The Nation that Soludo had them in his plans.

The source further said that very soon, their issue would be looked into, adding that there was no cause for alarm.

Obaseki signs six executive orders on investments.

Obaseki signs six executive orders on investments.

Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo state, has signed six executive orders aimed at further enhancing the state’s economic environment.
He claimed that his administration has received $3 billion in investments during the last seven years.

He clarified that the executive directives will make it easier for Edo state residents to conduct business.

One noteworthy item in the contents is a tax exemption for small enterprises whose owners make less than the state minimum wage.

He said: “We are very keen on supporting small and medium size businesses and we are also conscious of the fact that we don’t want to overburden them with tax while they are at their nascent stage of development.

“So the adoption of pre-emptive income tax regime for small businesses in Edo State now ensures that except you are earning above the minimum wage as a proprietor or an entrepreneur you will not be liable to tax and when you begin to make money then we expect that you meet your obligations.

“We have received in excess of $3 billion in the last seven years in various areas as investments, either in agriculture, in technology, in manufacturing, in services and this is just the beginning.

“With these executive orders I have just signed, I expect that we will see rapid increase in investors who want to take advantage of the opportunities which Edo offers.”

Gov Abiodun rewards workers.

Gov Abiodun rewards workers.

The Ogun State Government has rewarded some workers in the state civil service for their outstanding performances towards the growth of the state in 2023.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by the Head of Service, Kolawole Fagbohum, said the rewards given to the individuals were meant to encourage effective and healthy competition among the state workforce to improve their performances for the continuous growth of the state.

Abiodun stated this during the end-of-the-year thanksgiving and award of excellence organised by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with other agencies, including Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, and Ogun State Waste Management Authority, at the Government House in Abeokuta.

The awardees who received certificates and cash prizes were Olabamiji Akorede from the Ministry of Environment, Mrs Esther Adeyanju from Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency and Ibrahim Yusuf from Ogun State Waste Management Authority.

A statement on Saturday read in part, “Governor Abiodun also used the opportunity to reiterate government determination to always prioritise workers welfare which can be attested to by the monthly palliative allowance to cushion the effects of removal of fuel subsidy and global economic meltdown, payment of peculiar allowances and the recently paid end-of-the-year special bonus to all categories of its workforce.

“These allowances he said were effected without any labour unrest in the state which confirmed that the present administration is worker-friendly, pledging to always encourage them to always be the best they can be in the service through in-service training, upgrading and promotions.”

Obi laments declining reading culture among youths.

Obi laments declining reading culture among youths.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has emphasised the need to improve the reading culture in Nigeria, which he says has declined due to systemic issues.

Obi said this as at an event in Lagos on Friday aimed at promoting reading among Nigerian youths.

The event titled ‘Christmas Magic,’ featured the unveiling of a new children’s book called “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” written by renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

In a statement via X on Saturday, Obi said, “Reading remains a very important aspect of our educational development, which must be encouraged always.

“Sadly, the reading culture among Nigerian youths has continued to decline due to a poor educational system, an inordinate desire for materialism, a lack of reading materials and functional libraries, and above all, the dying passion for reading among the youth.”

The event brought together several influential figures including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, academics like Prof. Hakeem Bello-Osagie, and activists like Dr. Oby Ezekwesili and Ndidi Nwuneli. Every speaker encouraged Nigerian youths to regain their passion for reading.

“Readers are leaders, they say. Reading will help the youth to build their critical thinking and analytical ability to succeed in an ever-complex world,” Obi stated, echoing a common refrain at the event.

Obi lauded the author for consistently using her literary works to advance societal causes.

“I thank Chimamanda for organising this wonderful event, and for consistently advancing the cause of our society through her literary works,” he said.

The former governor reiterated his vision for Nigeria’s future.

“As I have always maintained, our New Nigeria will encourage our very gifted youths to discover their talents, fuel their passions, and develop their skills for the progress of our society,” Obi added.

Elections should be decided at polling units, not courtrooms – Speaker.

Elections should be decided at polling units, not courtrooms – Speaker.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has frowned at the nation’s electoral integrity, stating that elections ought to be decided at the polling units rather than courtrooms.

This is just as he commended his colleagues for their dedication to duty since the inauguration of the federal parliament on June 13, 2023.

Abbas stated these on Saturday in Abuja during his remarks at the vacation of the House for the New Year holidays.

The Speaker called for a minute’s silence in honour of members of the 10th House who lost their lives including Abdulkadir Danbuga (Isa/Sabon Birnin, Federal Constituency, Sokoto State) and the member-elect representing Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State, Ismaila Maihanci, who died a few days before the inauguration of the House.

He said, “The House recognises the importance of electoral reforms in strengthening our democratic institutions. Consequently, we took the initiative to take the lead in soliciting citizens’ input on the Electoral Act 2022 and recommendations on strengthening it to deliver more free and fair elections and reduce the judiciary’s influence on the electoral process.

“The outcomes of elections should be decided at the polling unit and not in a courtroom. The over-judicialisation of electoral outcomes has greatly undermined public confidence and could erode the legitimacy of political leadership if not quickly and adequately addressed. ”

Commending his colleagues for a job well done, he said, “From the onset, we deliberately adopted a leadership model that is open, transparent, impartial, and inclusive. This approach is intended to enhance public trust and accountability, encourage participation, facilitate better decision-making, and promote new ideas to make the legislature more effective in discharging its constitutional mandate.

“To strengthen our internal processes and systems, we reviewed and updated our Standing Orders to better adapt to changing societal and legislative needs and incorporate technological advancements such as virtual and hybrid meetings and e-parliament to enhance efficiency and accessibility.

“The revised Standing Orders is now well suited to address emerging issues and new challenges, such as global emergencies and the COVID-19 pandemic that obstructed the effective functioning of the legislature. Our rules have also been reviewed to align them to international standards and best practices, facilitating better collaboration and consistency in global legislative processes.

“In the period under review, the House concluded and presented a robust legislative agenda outlining clear and specific objectives that the House intends to achieve and our legislative priorities. This clarity is already contributing to focusing the efforts and resources of the House and its committees on key issues while at the same time making the legislative process more efficient and effective.

“The House Agenda identifies eight priority areas, which have been carefully crafted to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Executive and the yearnings of our constituents. The key areas of focus highlighted in the agenda are strengthening good governance, improving national security, economic growth and development, social sector reform and development, inclusion and open parliament, influencing/directing Nigeria’s foreign policy, and addressing climate change and environmental sustainability. The chosen thematic areas were aggregated in consultation with citizens.”

Bills and motions
On work done so far by the House, the Speaker said, “Our legislative outputs in the last six months are remarkable. The House received and considered 962 bills, 500) motions, and 153 petitions. Of these numbers, 120 bills have passed the second reading stage. They are currently undergoing further review and refinement to address some of the concerns raised during the debates.

Another 120 bills have been referred to committees for in-depth analysis. We have also successfully passed many other bills, which have been transmitted to the Senate for concurrence.

“Notable among these bills are the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023; the Federal Audit Service Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023; the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023; and the Oath Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2023. Other critical bills passed by the House include the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill, 2023; the Federal Fire and Rescue Service Bill, 2023; the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2023; the Niger Delta Development Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023; the Nigerian Medical Research Council (Establishment) Bill, 2023; the Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill, 2023; and more recently, the South East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2023.

“The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2023 that we passed was assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on 23rd November, 2023. It repealed the 1964 legislation and replaced it with more contemporary legislation that empowers the Defence Corporation to manufacture, store, and dispose of ordinances. All these bills are intended to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to the challenges that have plagued our society. Through these bills, we aim to empower our citizens, enhance social justice, promote economic growth, and promote peace and security.”

He continued, “Over the same period, the House received and resolved over 500 motions, many of which brought to the attention of the House and the nation pressing matters affecting the people.

“I have always considered motions to be one of the most potent tools of legislative representation. They show that the legislature, better than any other institution, is best placed to articulate the needs of the people and how to address them. Notable motions the House considered include oil theft, student loans, job racketeering, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, firearms, COVID-19 fund mismanagement, 3 per cent contribution to host communities, and the petroleum subsidy regime.

“In response to the issues raised, the House constituted ad-hoc committees to conduct investigative hearings and make recommendations for necessary legislative actions.

“I am glad to announce that out of the 30 ad hoc committees, 25 have laid their reports before the House for consideration, while four have been considered.

In addition to bills and motions, the House also received 153 petitions, which are receiving necessary legislative action.

“The House has made significant strides in fostering greater collaboration with citizens in all our key legislative activities. This has been achieved through engaging citizens in oversight, committee activities, and other legislative processes.

“These efforts have ensured that the voices of the people are heard and their inputs are incorporated into the lawmaking process. As noted earlier, in developing the legislative agenda, the House organised a citizens’ town hall whose inputs were incorporated into the final draft.”

Tinubu, Shettima’s Wives visit Akeredolu’s family in Ibadan.

The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in company with the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday.

While speaking during the visit, Mrs Tinubu described the late Akeredolu as a great man, stating that Nigeria has lost one of her great men.

She said, “I keep asking when people ask someone, ‘Is somebody alright or is he sick?’ I said, ‘Who is well?’ We all have one ailment or the other, and it is only God that gives us each day to live by.

“He has done his best. He was a great, brave man, loved by my family, loved by my husband, and respected by my husband.

“We can only wish that the legacies he left behind could continue and endure. I wish his wife, his children, grand children and the family that God will comfort them and also ease their pains.

“They should live with the fact that the man has done well. He has done well to people, he will be solidly missed, and we pray that his soul rests in perfect peace.”

It was reported that Akeredolu died on Wednesday, December 27, at the age of 67 while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer in a German hospital.

The acting governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was also sworn in as substantive governor on the same day, following the death of the governor.

Senate Passes 2024 Budget with Significant Increase of N1.2 Trillion.

In a significant development, the Nigerian Senate has passed the 2024 budget, marking a crucial step in the fiscal planning process for the upcoming year. The budget received approval during the third reading, accompanied by a substantial increase of N1.2 trillion, pushing the total appropriation from N27.5 trillion to N28.7 trillion.

The approval came following a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, indicating broad support for the revised budget. Before reaching this stage, the Senate diligently considered the report of the Appropriation Bill, initially presented by Senator Adeola Solomon, the Chairman of the Appropriation Committee.

Key highlights of the revised budget include the following allocations:

Aggregate Expenditure: N28,777,404,073,861

Statutory Transfers: N1,742,786,788,150

Recurrent Expenditure: N8,768,5330,852

Capital Expenditure: N9,995,143,298,028

GDP Growth Estimate: 3.88%

The initial budget proposal of N27.5 trillion was presented to a joint session of the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu on November 29. Notably, the President had earmarked the budget deficit for the 2024 fiscal year at N9.18 trillion, representing 3.88% of Nigeria's gross domestic product (GDP).

President Tinubu explained that the deficit would be financed through various means, including new borrowings totaling N7.83 trillion, N298.49 billion from privatization proceeds, and a drawdown of 1.05 trillion naira on multilateral and bilateral loans secured for specific development projects.

The passage of the budget reflects the commitment of the Senate to expedite crucial fiscal matters for the benefit of the nation. It is anticipated that the revised budget will address evolving economic needs and contribute to Nigeria's growth and development.

The Senate had initially passed the budget for a second reading on December 1, setting the stage for detailed deliberations leading to the final approval during the third reading.

Change of Batton: Ondo State Must Move Forward Under Your Watch. Omoluabi Group, Ondo State Chapter Advise Ayedatiwa.

Change of Batton: Ondo State Must Move Forward Under Your Watch. Omoluabi Group, Ondo State Chapter Advise Ayedatiwa.

Batton changed through the transfer of power first by constitutional power backed by doctrine of necessity. Now it is the case of baton change linked to natural phenomenon which was death an unforseen circumstances. Every man will definitely go to the world beyond but what is important are the legacies left behind.

Good or bad on the face of mourning, another mayor is in town and the state must now begin to move on with no impediment to socio- economic and infrastructural development of the sunshine state.

Ayedatiwa Lucky Orimisan by providence, destiny and divine pronouncement with effect from 5:19pm on the 27th December, 2023 became the 6th Executive Governor of Ondo State. The Ilaje born politician appears a figure who gave his absolute loyalty to his benefactor, leader and immediate past Governor of Ondo State. He went through several tests of loyalty which many never prayed for in their political journey as party loyalists. He got banters from so many political actors who saw him as a threat to a camp and political family which himself was a benefactor and member.

Take it or leave it , His Excellency Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa was loyal to the Aketi Group and imbibed the native intelligence required to sustain a lasting love that should exist between a boss and a subordinate.

Nature has paved way and today he is the Executive Governor of the state. What can man do when destiny has prevailed? What permutations can be as perfect as that planned by way of divinity? To most of us he began to get his sympathy beginning from the moment he was battered by those who wanted to profit their own personal interest over the constitution. His maturity and display of understanding in the face of executive provocation may have earned him further approval and mercy from God. His name's speaks volumes and may have played vital roles in his making as the Governor of Ondo State. People must now begin to know that the more some personalities are hated the better for them to secure great concerns from God.

His Excellency has now gotten the baton of leadership and will provide direction till February 2025. During which he is at liberty to consider throwing his hat I to the ring to contest as Governor. There is no crime in this afterall.

This is the time to move on as an administrator and Chief Executive Officer of the State.. When there is a will there is always a way. Ondo State must now move forward and put behind himself the past. Ondo State is bigger than any group, persons or people. Governor Aiyedatiwa must ensure stability and continuity in the face of challenges.

So for concerned citizens of Ondo State like us who believed that we must move on, on this basis it is proper to advise as follows:

1. Allow for continuity by completing all ongoing projects embarked upon by the Late Governor.

2. Find a way to honor the Late Governor by possibly naming a completed project under his watch after him. This act will simply immortalize him.

3.. Special attention be given to Rufus Giwa Polytechnic. There is need to set a panel of inquiry to unravel the administrative mishaps and shortcomings that have bedevilled the state polytechnic in the last two
 years.

4. Apply political solutions where and when necessary. This should be at your discretion.

5. Establish a good working relationship with the civil service sector and other sectors contributing to the socio- economic development of the state. Infact a 13 month salary can do some good and magic like in other clime.

It is important to note that the real indigenes of ondo state now expect that your administration will be able to provide the needed succour to relieve them of some silent pains and sufocations suffered in the hands of mischievous aliens who almost turned the state to a private estate and grounded it politically because of the absence of the late governor.

Our earnest prayer as Omoluabi Group, Ondo State chapter is that may His Excellency Aiyedatiwa Lucky Orimisan succeed in his new assignment.

Think Omoluabi!
Act Omoluabi!!

Be Decisive About Implementation of Environmental Sanitation Laws, EKSG Charges LG Bosses.

Be Decisive About Implementation of Environmental Sanitation Laws, EKSG Charges LG Bosses.

The Ekiti State Government, has charged the local government chairmen to be more concerned and committed to the implementation of all relevant environmental sanitation laws in the state.

Of specific reference, Mrs Afuye, raised concerns over the expediency of the local governments' chairmen to key into the policy of making the monthly environmental sanitation exercise more successful in 2024.

The Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, gave the charge in Ikere Ekiti, on Saturday, while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Ikere Local Government Area of the State.

Mrs Afuye, in a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje, said there was a need for all the council bosses to coalesce actions with the state government for strict compliance with environmental sanitation exercise.

She said restricting the citizens to stay within the precinct of their residences for three hours once in a month  to observe cleanliness and hygiene shouldn't be a difficult task to comply with.

Mrs Afuye expressed dismay at the poor level of compliance during the exercise she monitored in the local government, regretting that the residents capitalised on non-restriction of movements  by government to manifest laxity and non-compliance.

"Declaration of non-restriction of vehicular and human movements shouldn't be a reason why people shouldn't stay at home and take care of their premises. This exercise is for the health safety of our citizens and nothing more.

"I want to appeal to our local government chairmen and health officers to be more serious about the implementation of environmental laws in 2024.

"Some noticeable  laxities and non-chalant attitude  noticed in 2023 must be corrected, because this is one exercise that borders on the wellbeing of our residents".

The Deputy Governor monitored the exercise alongside the political heads, health officers and other staff of Ikere Local Government and Ikere West Local Council Development Area.

Prince (Amb.) Ogungbemi, Highlights Media Roles in Grassroots Development.

Prince (Amb.) Ogungbemi, Highlights Media Roles in Grassroots Development.
...... A Thought-Provoking Public Lecture.

In an intellectually charged Annual General Meeting, Hon. Prince (Amb) Michael Ogungbemi (FCPA, CSME, CIM), Chairman, Ajoni LCDA delivered a thought-provoking public lecture on "The Media and Grassroots Development." The event, hosted at KSSD Hotel, NTA Road, Ado Ekiti, brought together members of the Association of the Mass Communication Alumni of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

Hon. Ogungbemi commenced his discourse by highlighting the pivotal role media plays in connecting with grassroots development. He emphasized the symbiotic relationship between media engagement and community progress.

Underscoring the media's fundamental role in disseminating information, Hon. Ogungbemi stressed its power to bring marginalized issues to the national forefront. Media, as a platform, holds the potential to amplify local communities' stories, struggles, and aspirations, thereby mobilizing support and advocating for positive change.

In the digital age, media platforms provide spaces for individuals and communities to express concerns and share stories. This empowerment ensures that the struggles, aspirations, and needs of grassroots communities are recognized by decision-makers, fostering inclusive and sustainable development.

Furthermore, the media acts as a catalyst for community development by enabling participatory communication. Grassroots initiatives can leverage various media tools to engage citizens actively, leading to self-reliance and sustainable development.

Hon. Ogungbemi also highlighted the role of media in education and awareness among grassroots communities. By reporting on pertinent issues, media equips communities with the knowledge necessary for informed decision-making, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.

Despite these positive contributions, challenges such as accessibility, affordability, and media literacy hinder full grassroots participation. Bridging the digital divide, ensuring equal opportunities, and fostering collaborative efforts are essential to overcome these barriers.

In conclusion, Hon. Ogungbemi underscored the transformative potential of media in empowering local communities and fostering sustainable grassroots development. He urged individuals, organizations, and policymakers to recognize and harness the power of media for building a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous nation.

The public lecture served as an inspirational call to action, emphasizing the imperative to leverage media as a powerful agent of change for grassroots development.

The House of Assembly had on Thursday passed the budget reviewing the capital and recurrent expenditures as well as the projected revenue of 18 Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

The review led to a reduction in the total revenue target of the government from N210.248bn to N198.748bn, giving a reduction of N11.5bn.

Tinubu determined to end violence in South-East — Shettima.

Tinubu determined to end violence in South-East — Shettima.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Friday, said the Tinubu-led government is resolute to end the reign of terror in Nigeria’s South-East fueled by those he called “self-serving criminals” taking advantage of the security situation to foster their political agenda.

“The problem we are here to solve as a community, as a Umunna, is a creation of self-serving criminals who do not represent the interests of the Ndi-Igbo and Nigerians,” Shettima said in Bende, Abia State when he unveiled the Peace in South-East Project by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.

His comments came over three weeks after he advocated the adoption of non-kinetic mechanisms to tackle insecurity in the South-East.

Shettima who received a delegation led by the Deputy Speaker at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on December 5, said, “The approach is the most beautiful I have seen so far. We need to build bridges, there is a need for a handshake, that way, those that have not been radicalised can be captured.” Kalu’s delegation were at the State House to seek the VP’s buy-in on the PISE-P.

Since 2012, insecurity in Nigeria’s South East, where the Indigenous People of Biafra is most active, has become increasingly complex and multifaceted as the region continues to see a rise in unrest and conflict in recent years.

The increased unrest is partly attributed to the activities of IPOB and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network, which, proponents say, was established to combat criminality and protect the local population from perceived threats.

However, ESN’s operations have led to clashes with Nigerian security forces, resulting in casualties and further instability. A report by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting revealed that at least two people die daily as a result of violence in the South East, with over 1700 deaths documented between 2021 and June 2023.

According to a statement signed Friday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the VP said Tinubu is concerned about the development and is “determined to deploy all available resources to eliminate the purveyors of falsehoods and propaganda that have become weapons against Nigeria’s unity.”

The statement is titled ‘Tinubu poised to end the reign of terror in South-East – Shettima.’

Delivering his speech titled, ‘Why We are all Umunna’, Shettima said, “His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, has been concerned about the extensive economic devastation inflicted by non-state actors on this beautiful region since we took office.

“He is acutely aware that our commitment to Nigeria’s future remains incomplete as long as we grapple with the sinister operations of economic saboteurs who masquerade as advocates for the Ndi-Igbo.

“That’s why he’s determined to utilise all available resources to ensure that the peace we’re establishing in this region is not cosmetic, and we can’t guarantee it unless all of us see through the falsehoods and propaganda that have become weapons against our unity.”

Shettima reasoned that the terror groups that have held the South East to ransom were not created by the people of the region, or of Nigerians from other parts of the country.

“The problem we are here to solve as a community, as an Umunna, is a creation of self-serving criminals who do not represent the interests of the Ndi-Igbo and Nigerians.

“Mr President knows this better than all of us, and that’s why he has never held any group accountable for the infractions of law-breaking individuals who identify as their members. This, I believe, is the democracy we have all chosen,” he stated.

He revealed that the criminals disrupting the peace in the South-East are doing so in connivance with “forces exploiting the situation for dangerous political agenda,” adding that attempts to undo the hard work of the nation’s heroes past will fail.

However, the VP maintained that the situation cannot be reversed unless the government involves the people whom he said are its ears, legs and mouths in the region.

“Today, we stand united to firmly declare: enough is enough,” Shettima stated, stressing the need for a coordinated intervention to tackle insecurity in the region head-on.

He promised that the Tinubu administration “shall not rest until it fulfils its pledge to mitigate the crisis” it inherited.

Shettima commended Deputy Speaker Kalu, who is the convener of the peace initiative, for his efforts to restore lasting peace in the South East, just as he said the event attests “to the profound understanding that no one comprehends the experience of a community better than the people themselves.”

Earlier, Kalu said his goal for initiating the PISE-P was to foster peace, unity, and development in the region. The project also aims at promoting reconciliation among communities and individuals affected by past conflicts, he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the South-East Governor’s Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, commended the Vice President for his sufficient goodwill to the people of the South East.

Uzodimma who is also Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum said, “Our Vice President has shown sufficient goodwill to the people of the South East.

“From this part of the country, we will continue to work with the rest of Nigeria to make the country a prosperous nation for the interest of all of us for service to God and humanity.”

Dignitaries present at the event include Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Gilbert Ibezim; Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

Others are Senator Osita Izunaso; Kano State APC governorship candidate, Nasiru Gawuna; former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Henry Ikoh; the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe; the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi; former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha; former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, among others.
