Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been charged by the FA following his reaction to being sent off against Newcastle United.

WHAT HAPPENED? The incident occurred after the Reds captain was shown a dismissed for his late challenge on Newcastle forward Alexander Isak at St. James' Park on Sunday. A late double from Darwin Nunez resulted in Jurgen Klopp's side snatching all three points in a 2-1 win.

WHAT THEY SAID: An FA statement read: ''Virgil Van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August. It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute. Virgil Van Dijk has until Friday, 1 September to provide a response to this charge.''

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Already set to undergo a one-match ban for his actions, the Netherlands international now could be issued with further sanctions. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will choose to appeal the charges brought against the defender.

Mason Greenwood next club: Besiktas interested in signing Man Utd forward with striker told 'Turkish fans will accept him'.

Turkish side Besiktas are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood on loan.

The 21-year-old forward saw charges of attempted rape, coercive and controlling behaviour and assault against him dropped in February.

It was confirmed by the Red Devils last week that the Bradford-born forward is set to resume his career away from Old Trafford.

However, Turkish side Besiktas have emerged as potential suitors for the forward, with i suggesting that the Super Lig outfit is considering entering into negotiations with United.

With his contract not set to expire until June 2025, the most likely deal would include a temporary switch, with his future beyond this season still relatively unclear.

“Of course they have seen what has been said in the UK and further afield,” a source told the newspaper. “People think that Turkey is an easy way out for Greenwood, as he will just be able to get on with his career away from the public eye.

''But clubs know that is not how it works. Reporters will come from England to follow his progress wherever he goes, we are sure of that.

“A short loan is appealing, though. If things go wrong, he will return to Manchester quickly. If he comes to Istanbul and scores goals straight away, the boos will quickly go.

''That is just the way that football works, however bad a taste that leaves. I think Turkish fans will accept him.”

Board of trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party announces six months suspension of senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as the national leader of the party due to anti-party activities.

A crisis of Confidence has brewed silently within the party over the last few months since the end of the 2023 Elections with accusations and Counter accusations between the different groups within its ranks.

The Crisis has now gotten to a head with the suspension clamped down on its Presidential Candidate and National Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

This follows the suspension of its national Publicity Secretary and Some Others earlier, a move rejected by its Board of Trustees.

Oyo state government has disclosed that arrangements have been concluded for distribution of food palliatives to residents of the state tagged ‘poorest of the poor’.

This was made known to Governor’s Office Correspondents by the Commissioners for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, Budget and Planning, Professor Babatunde Musibaudeen, and Women Affairs, Mrs Toyin Balogun at a press briefing on Tuesday shortly after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Governor’s Exco Chamber.

Governor Seyi Makinde will flag off the food palliative distribution in Oyo on Wednesday while his Deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal and Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly carry out same exercise at Saki area of Oke-ogun and Eruwa part of Ibarapa simultaneously.

The food palliatives according to the Commissioner include among other items 10kg bag of rice and 5kg bag of beans which would be give to each vulnerable households.

200,000 poorest of the poor household according to the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Professor Babatunde Musibaudeen would benefit from the palliatives distribution.

The Budget Commissioner noted that the 200,000 household by multiplier effect translates to about one million residents of the state expected to benefit from the exercise.

According to Professor Musibaudeen, the palliative budgetary framework comprise various segments including food, food security (agropreneurs), transportation, security apparatus among others.

The total cost budgeted for the state palliatives is N8.63 billion and of the total cost, the state government shoulders N5.9 billion cost while the local government shoulders N2.6 billion.

Asked about the data relied upon for onward distribution of the palliatives to the poorest of the poor, the Commissioners for Information and Budget in their separate responses said data generated from Covid-19 has so far proved to be most reliable and would be used as a baseline template subject to future reviews after feedback received from the phase one of the exercise.
