In a significant move to restructure and enhance the efficiency of critical federal agencies, President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action by dismissing two Chief Executive Officers. The decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at safeguarding the rights of Nigerian consumers and strengthening key growth-enabling institutions to contribute more substantially to the nation's economy.
The affected Chief Executive Officers are Mr. Babatunde Irukera, who served as the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and Mr. Alexander Ayoola Okoh, the Director-General/CEO of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).
The President's directive mandates the dismissed CEOs to hand over their responsibilities to the next most senior officers within their respective agencies. This transition period will be in effect until the appointment of new Chief Executive Officers.
The removal of Mr. Babatunde Irukera and Mr. Alexander Ayoola Okoh from their positions is effective immediately, according to the directive issued by President Tinubu. The decision aligns with the administration's commitment to ensuring a more streamlined and effective operation of critical agencies responsible for consumer protection and economic development.
Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, conveyed the announcement on January 8, 2024. The reshuffling of leadership within these agencies is anticipated to set the stage for renewed vigor and strategic direction in achieving their respective mandates under the broader goals of the federal government.
This development underscores the commitment of the Tinubu administration to dynamic governance, fostering economic growth, and ensuring that key institutions operate at optimal levels to drive the nation's progress. The forthcoming appointments to these critical positions will be closely watched as stakeholders await the next phase of leadership within the FCCPC and BPE.
