Honourable Oluwatuyi Oluwagbenga: A Visionary Game Changer Revolutionising Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Honourable Oluwatuyi Oluwagbenga: A Visionary Game Changer Revolutionising Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area.
By Asubiojo G.O.

On the 4th of January, 2024, Honourable Oluwatuyi Gbenga, popularly known as Chenco, assumed office as the Executive Chairman of Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government (IILG). Since then, he has led the LG with an unwavering commitment to progress, empowerment, and sustainable development, transforming the lives of his people and setting a precedent for effective governance. His pragmatic approach to leadership has made an indelible mark in agriculture, infrastructural development, social welfare, economic growth, and public health.

Under the leadership of Honourable Chenco, agriculture has become the cornerstone of Irepodun-Ifelodun’s economic revitalization. The establishment of the first-ever piggery in the region is one of his outstanding achievements, generating significant revenue for the local government. With two pigs recently slaughtered for the market, the piggery has proven to be a sustainable source of income, advancing both the local economy and job creation.

In a groundbreaking initiative, Chenco’s administration embarked on the nurturing of 10,000 hybrid cocoa trees—an unprecedented project in Ekiti State. This effort is setting the stage for an agrarian revolution in the region, positioning Irepodun-Ifelodun as a leading producer of cocoa.

Furthermore, the LG has witnessed a massive planting of maize and yam crops aimed at addressing food security not only within Irepodun-Ifelodun but across Ekiti and beyond. These efforts have attracted people from neighboring communities, helping to alleviate hunger and boosting local agricultural trade.

Honourable Chenco has prioritized the development of key infrastructure to improve the standard of living for residents. One of the most notable projects is the renovation of the traditional Council Chambers, which had been in dire need of repair for several years. This move has restored a sense of pride in the community and reinforced the importance of preserving local history.

Additionally, Chenco has overseen the sinking of motorized solar-powered boreholes to provide sustainable and clean water sources in various towns within the local government. The installation of mobile public toilets further demonstrates his commitment to improving sanitation and public health.

Honourable Chenco has ensured that the welfare of his people is at the forefront of his administration. Over 200 constituents have been empowered through substantial cash grants, providing financial relief and empowering local businesses to thrive. His administration’s policy on staff welfare has also seen improved conditions for government workers, motivating them to contribute to the local development agenda.

In response to the current economic challenges, Chenco’s administration has provided temporary employment to local indigenes, offering a lifeline to many who are struggling to meet their daily needs. This initiative, coupled with various skill acquisition programs, has proven invaluable in uplifting families across the region.

Honourable Chenco’s administration has also demonstrated a strong commitment to public health through environmental restoration. One of the most notable public health efforts was the clearing of a waste site that had been stationed in the community for over sixty years. This site had been causing significant health problems for residents due to improper waste disposal and contamination of the environment. Under Chenco’s leadership, the waste site was cleared, leading to improved sanitation and better living conditions for the people of Irepodun-Ifelodun. This is a clear testament to his foresight in not only improving infrastructure but also addressing long-standing health concerns within the community.

Honourable Chenco’s success as a leader is not only rooted in his individual achievements but also in the collaborative spirit he fosters within his administration. His team, consisting of the Vice Chairman, Hon. Remi Alade; the Secretary, Hon. Dr. Sule Fatai; and the Leader of the House, Hon. Mrs. Olagunju Yemisi, has worked seamlessly with him to ensure the success of his vision.

Mrs. Akinbobola Deborah-B, the Head of Local Government Administration, has been instrumental in harnessing the potential of each department to achieve the administration’s goals. Through her effective management and oversight, the LG has seen remarkable improvements in service delivery and governance.

In collaboration with prominent political figures like Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB) and Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), Chenco has overseen the construction of modern markets worth millions of naira, complete with modern amenities like toilets. These projects, undertaken in partnership with the state government, have positively reshaped the economic landscape of Irepodun-Ifelodun.

As the Information Director of Irepodun-Ifelodun LG, Asubiojo G.O expressed deep appreciation for the progress made under Honourable Chenco’s leadership: "The transformation we are witnessing today is a direct result of Honourable Chenco’s tireless work and commitment to improving the lives of our people. From agriculture to infrastructure and public health, his visionary approach is reshaping Irepodun-Ifelodun for the better."

Dr. Austine Ibikunle, President of the Igede Ekiti Progressive Association, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the broader regional impact: "Honourable Chenco has not only uplifted Irepodun-Ifelodun, but his visionary leadership is also setting a benchmark for the entire Ekiti State. His work, especially in agriculture and infrastructure, will have lasting positive effects not just for us, but for generations to come."

Comrade Aina Festus Olawole, the NULGE Chairman of Irepodun-Ifelodun LG, also weighed in, praising the Chairman's focus on staff welfare and employment opportunities: "Under Chenco’s leadership, we have seen a real commitment to the well-being of both the local workforce and the wider community. From improved conditions for government workers to temporary employment for many of our citizens, he is truly dedicated to lifting everyone in the community."

Honourable Chenco’s remarkable leadership has earned him the admiration of his constituents. Chief Ayo Otegbola, one of the most respected sons of the town, expressed his excitement and pride in the Chairman’s performance, noting that while they are grateful for his efforts, there is always room for more.

R. Adepoju Agboola echoed similar sentiments, praising Chenco for his incomparable achievements since the creation of Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Mr. Odetola Deji, another prominent member of the community, thanked God for installing Honourable Chenco at this pivotal time, noting that his leadership has brought about a positive transformation. The people are not only optimistic about the future of Irepodun-Ifelodun but also hopeful that Chenco’s legacy will continue to inspire progressive development in the region.

Honourable Chenco’s leadership is strongly influenced by the visionary governance of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji. His administration draws inspiration from the Governor’s unwavering commitment to infrastructural development, economic growth, and social welfare.

Governor BAO’s achievements in the areas of education, health, and infrastructure have provided a solid foundation for Chenco’s policies. The construction of roads, the provision of healthcare facilities, and the creation of jobs have greatly influenced Chenco’s own initiatives in Irepodun-Ifelodun.

The Onigede of Igede, Oba Aladesuru James Adelusi, has also lauded Honourable Chenco for manifesting a glorious purpose in his leadership of Irepodun-Ifelodun. The King’s endorsement is a testament to Chenco’s effective leadership and commitment to the socio-economic development of his people.

Honourable Chenco’s journey from the time he assumed office to today reflects his deep sense of purpose and dedication to the growth of his community. The challenges he has faced administratively and politically have only strengthened his resolve to continue working tirelessly for the betterment of the people of Irepodun-Ifelodun. With a team of visionary leaders, supportive political heavyweights, and a dedicated local government administration, Chenco is undoubtedly on the path to achieving even greater feats.

His legacy is not only one of infrastructural development but also of a deep commitment to the welfare of his people. As he continues to push for progressive change, the future of Irepodun-Ifelodun shines brighter than ever before.

In addition to the executive efforts of Honourable Chenco, the legislative arm of Irepodun-Ifelodun LG under the leadership of Hon. Mrs. Olagunju Yemisi has played a vital role in ensuring harmony, stability, and progress. Her leadership of the legislative council has not only promoted transparency and accountability, but has also fast-tracked the passage of key developmental policies that align with the Chairman’s vision. Under her guidance, the legislative body has remained responsive and people-oriented, acting swiftly on motions and bills that promote social welfare, public health, and infrastructural development. Her collaboration with the executive has been exemplary—symbolizing a synergy that is crucial for effective governance.

Moreover, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Remi Alade, and the Secretary of the LG, Dr. Hon. Sule Fatai, both hailing from the same town Awo-Ekiti, have been unwavering pillars of support. They have worked hand-in-hand with the Chairman in implementing and promoting the administration’s agenda. As dynamic mobilisers and ambassadors of the government, their grassroots engagements have amplified public trust and participation in local governance.

Hon. Remi Alade praised the unity within the administration: “We are more than just colleagues—we are a team bound by a shared purpose. The transformation under Chairman Chenco is a product of teamwork and shared dreams.”

Dr. Hon. Sule Fatai added: “This government is people-focused and vision-driven. I am proud to be part of an administration that walks its talk and delivers on promises.”

Also deserving of commendation is Prince Adegoke Peters, the Director of the Administration Department of Irepodun-Ifelodun LG. Through his astute coordination and professional oversight, the administrative machinery of the local government has witnessed improved efficiency and service delivery. His dedication and managerial acumen have significantly supported the seamless execution of policies and projects across departments.

These laudable tasks cannot be accomplished without the unwavering support of his pragmatic better half, Mrs. Helen Oluwatuyi. She has consistently demonstrated her commitment to giving back to the community by providing cash and food to mothers of twins and the less privileged, and continues to do so with great dedication.

His legacy is not only one of infrastructural development but also of a deep commitment to the welfare of his people. As he continues to push for progressive change, the future of Irepodun-Ifelodun shines brighter than ever before.

"I am delighted to join you in celebrating your Day, an annual reminder of the hope, potential, and power within you. We honour you all as the treasures that you are. Indeed, you are God's gift to us. Being here is a great privilege, and I appreciate these blessings. Ekiti is proud to stand with the world in saying no to bullying of our children in all its forms.

"We are building a society where every child feels safe, seen, heard, and supported regardless of background or circumstance.

The government is enforcing the Child Rights Law and other relevant laws and policies that protect children's rights. These efforts are driven by the belief that a secure and happy child becomes a productive adult.

Our students' improved performance in national and international examinations, is a testament to the hard work of our educators and the enabling environment created by the State Government.

"Our First Lady's Back to School Initiative distributes school essentials like bags, stationery, and uniforms to children in public schools at the start of each academic session. These items and regular interactive sessions offer our pupils encouragement and mentorship".
