Minister intervenes in cooking gas price hike.

Minister intervenes in cooking gas price hike.

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has waded into the challenges bordering on the supply and pricing of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, in the Nigerian domestic market.

The intervention follows the rise in recent months in the price of LPG per kg from about N700 to above N900 in some parts of the country.

Key challenges identified as responsible for LPG price increase include FX sourcing for imports and insufficient supply to the domestic market by producers.

The minister’s spokesman, Louis Ibah, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, November 26, said the meeting for the intervention at the instance of the minister, was held at the NNPC Towers Abuja recently.

According to him, it had in attendance top officials of Chevron Nigeria Limited led by Sansay Narasimi; Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) led by its Chief Executive Officer, Farouk Ahmed and the NNPCL.

Ekpo expressed the concerns of President Bola Tinubu over the astronomical increase in the price of cooking gas and the attendant hardship on the majority of citizens.

The minister, who noted that Nigeria is abundantly endowed with gas reserves, said the situation where some of the multinational firms were more concerned with gas exports without dedicating huge volumes to the domestic market was unacceptable and should be discouraged.

Ekpo said: “With the exponential increase in the price of LPG, there is the need for the Federal Government to intervene and I am representing this at this moment. We acknowledge that some producers are exporting while we are faced with the challenges of importation. Public interest is the overriding interest all over the world for the government, and the demand for LPG will increase as we approach December…you have a public service obligation to collaborate with the government to ensure the security of gas supply, we need to therefore bend backward and find solutions, to ensure that we have sufficient supply and stability in-country and that Nigerians have gas.”

The gas minister thereafter constituted a committee headed by the ACE of NMDPRA with a mandate to come up with recommendations on how to boost supplies and crash LPG prices within a week

“Learning from successful instances of some other organizations, we must recognize the following gaps and we must strive to overcome them. I come humbly before you, to let know that we have not done the best to ensure we tap into resource.

“I know that a number of reasons might be responsible for this. And learning from successful instances of some other organizations we must recognize the gaps, and we must strive to overcome them.

“I come humbly before you to let you know that we have not done the best to tap into your resources and know that a number of reasons might be responsible for this. I will just try and mention some which possibly will resonate.”

Federal Government advances plans for local vaccine manufacturing.

Federal Government advances plans for local vaccine manufacturing.

In its stride towards self-sufficiency in vaccine production, the federal government has undertaken a comprehensive review and validation of the National Plan for Vaccine Research & Development and Manufacturing in Nigeria.

The move aligns with the Four Point Agenda health sector objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the government, aiming to bolster local manufacturing and eliminate dependency on imported vaccines.

The National plan, a first of its kind in Africa, was initially developed in 2021 and delineates the roles of key stakeholders in Nigeria’s vaccine landscape.

At a review and validation meeting organized by the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) in Abuja over the weekend, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed optimism about the tangible outcomes of the Government’s efforts in local vaccine production.

He said the efforts over the years to commence local vaccines production is already yielding the expected results.

According to him, the review and validation meeting provided critical stakeholders and policy-makers the opportunity to address critical healthcare issues, while noting that it will enhance Nigeria’s entry of the pharmaceutical sector into the larger African market.

Saying that the review and validation of the Draft Roadmap will fast-tract the achievement of the vaccine policy objectives of the federal government, Alausa, noted: “With this initiative, I am confident that the government prioritization as regards local vaccine production will begin to yield the desired result within the shortest possible time, and the reliance on importation of this important public health tool will be drastically reduced.

“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will continue to provide the necessary oversight and work with NIPRD, partners and stakeholders at the various levels to ensure that the desired results of sustainable vaccine R&D and local production in Nigeria are achieved”.

The minister who was represented by Dr. David Atuwo emphasized Government’s level of preparation to kick-start local vaccine manufacturing, saying, “Despite the various challenges militating against local production of vaccines, I want to state that appreciable progress has been achieved in these past few years.

“Nigeria has recently attained Maturity Level Three (ML3) for regulatory oversight and this includes the area of vaccines.

“With this and other ongoing reforms in the health sector, vaccines produced as a result of this process will not only satisfy national needs, but will also be available for international procurement.

“Whilst the government is taking steps to provide the needed infrastructure requisite for the implementation of local vaccines’ production, it is commendable that NIPRD, in line with its mandate, continues to set the pace for responsive innovation in this area.”

On the importance of the review and validation meeting, the Minister noted that “This high-level meeting is intended to bring together relevant stakeholders in order to synthesize ideas and solutions for a robust and contextual base plan to achieve sustainable local manufacturing of vaccines in Nigeria.

“This approach will provide a strong foundation that is underpinned by empirical evidence. The adoption of this bottom-up strategy in developing this plan ensures that innovative ideas embedded in this framework are designed to stimulate local vaccines R&D and vaccines production in Nigeria.”

In his remarks, NIPRD Director General (DG), Obi Adigwe, said the meeting was the first step to unlock the health value chain plan which will not only save lives but also address critical socio-economic indices such as job creation, capacity building, revenue generation and technology transfer.

He said: “Africa no longer has an interest in tokenistic interventions such as fill-finish products, but has become interested in building dependable, equitable, and veracious partnerships that will enable the Continent to undertake full R&D for the production of vaccines.”

In what is seen as a new dimension to opposition politics in Ekiti State, a former Governor of the State and candidate of the Social democratic Party (SDP) in the last governorship election, Engr Segun Oni, stormed the Government House Chapel on Sunday morning to join Governor Biodun Oyebanji for the Sunday worship.

The former Governor who came with some members of his immediate family and political associates, arrived at the chapel, located inside the Government House complex, Ado-Ekiti around 9.55am, received by the Governor.

Former governor Oni said he was in the service to fulfil a promise he had earlier made to Governor Oyebanji to come and worship with him at the Government House Chapel, having missed the opportunity to join the Governor for the special thanksgiving service held on October 22, in commemoration of his first anniversary in office.

Oni who recalled that his last worship at the chapel was on October 15, 2010, the day he was removed from office by the Court of Appeal.

The former governor, in his address to the congregation, which included Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye; Speaker of the Assembly, Rt Hon Adeoye Aribasoye; Head of service, Engr Sunday Komolafe and some top government officials, called on stakeholders in the Ekiti project to join hands with Governor Oyebanji to achieve a landmark success for the collective progress of the State.

He emphasised the fact that politics remains an avenue to serve the people, adding that election and election petitions are part of the constitutional processes of democracy.

“It is good to contest an election. It is also good to challenge he outcome in the court. And after then, you move on. We should run politics. Politics should not run us. This is the time we should all join hands together with Governor Oyebanji to develop the State.

Engr Oni expressed delight at the transformation being experienced in the state within the last one year, saying that it an attestation to Governor Oyebanji’s exemplary and visionary leadership.

“I have come here to fellowship with everybody, especially my brother, the Governor and to also tell politicians, we should give our self holiday sometimes from politics and politicking.”, Engr Oni said.

He commended the Governor for various infrastructure projects as well as the ongoing efforts at ensuring all abandoned projects are completed including the Ado-Ifaki road. “ I will say he has being very impressive, he is a gift to us as a people and I believe that he has a perfect composure to move us forward”.

He charged the Governor to continue to trust in God for the realization of his shared prosperity agenda even in the face of the meager resources available to the State.

In his response, Governor Oyebanji thanked the former Governor for his love for Ekiti State and for his commitment to the development of the state.

Oyebanji, who described the former Governor as a selfless leader who genuinely love and worked for the growth of Ekiti People, said the state will forever be grateful to him for his selfless service to people of the state.

“I thank Your Excellency for this remarkable visit, which I consider a demonstration of your love for me and for our dear state. For you to come around and worship God with us shows you love and support our development efforts.

“One think remarkable about you is that you love Ekiti people and Ekiti people love you. You are selfless and you live in the heart of the people.

“That I won the election does not mean I am better than you. It is by God’s grace. And you have been a pillar of support to us, immediately the court case ended.”, Oyebanji added.

Oyebanji also used the avenue to appreciate all former Governors of the State for their support for his administration, not minding political party affiliations.

Assuring the former Governors that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of the people, Governor Oyebanji urged stakeholders to come and contribute their expertise and resources for the overall development of the state, emphasizing that progress knows no party lines.

The Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Pastor Segun Awolumate, who hailed the humility and simplicity of both former Governor Oni and the Incumbent Governor Oyebanji, urged politicians and public office holders/seekers to take a cue from the life styles of the two leaders.
