TWIN'S SEVEN SEVEN, ARTIST, THEATRICAL IMPRESARIO, OSHOGBO, NIGERIA. CIRCA:1980s

TWIN'S SEVEN SEVEN, ARTIST, THEATRICAL IMPRESARIO, OSHOGBO, NIGERIA.  CIRCA:1980s
Twins Seven Seven, born Omoba Taiwo Olaniyi Oyewale-Toyeje Oyelale Osuntoki (3 May 1944 – 16 June 2011) was a Nigerian painter, sculptor and musician.

He was an itinerant singer and dancer before he began his career as an artist, first attending in 1964 an Mbari Mbayo workshop conducted by Ulli Beier and Georgina Beier in Osogbo. Twins Seven Seven went on to become one of the best known artists of the Osogbo School.
Twins Seven - Seven was a legend, a traditionalist, an actor, he participated in Mosebolatan by Late Moses Olaiya(Baba Sala) he was a politician, he contested and won local government election as a councillor in Osogbo in early 1980's, he was an artist/sculptor and a Musician.

He was born as Omoba Taiwo Olaniyi Oyewale-Toyeje Oyekale Osuntoki to a father, Aitoyeje, who was a Muslim from Ibadan, Oyo State, and a mother, Mary, who was a Christian from Ogidi, Kogi State, in Nigeria. The name by which he became known alludes to the fact that he was the only surviving child of seven sets of twins born to his mother, Nigeria having the world's highest twinning rate. His mother was instructed by a babalawo to drink water sacred to the river goddess Osun to ensure her child's survival. As a result, it was believed that Twins Seven Seven was a reincarnation of his great-grandfather, Osun-toki, whose name means "Osun is worthy of worship." As a child, he was often difficult to his mother, threatening to "go away" again to the spirit realm, so the babalawo would etch small incisions on his face with special medicine herbs to ensure his permanency in the physical realm. The etchings remained on his face into adulthood.

Twins Seven Seven's introduction to the arts was not through painting, but through dance at the age of 16,  part of his inspiration for dance stemming from a Yoruba custom that stated that a woman who had birthed twins should dance throughout the streets for money, so Twins Seven Seven danced on his mother's behalf.

He attended primary and secondary school, as well as briefly attending a teachers' training college for one year, and although he achieved academic success in his examinations, he detested the structure of classrooms and grew stronger interests toward art and music.

After performing a show in Oshogbo at the Mbari Club, Twins Seven Seven encountered Ulli Beier, a German editor and scholar living there at the time, who with his wife Georgina Beier ran an artist workshop. The Oshogbo school prided itself as not being a place that taught artists, but rather provided opportunities to confirm the individual vision of the different artists. At the Beier workshop, Seven Seven was given basic tools and minimal instruction throughout his artistic processes. Through this, Seven Seven was able to create his own unique style of painting.

Twins Seven Seven's work is influenced by traditional Yoruba mythology and culture, and creates a fantastic universe of humans, animals, plants and Yoruba gods. Visually, his work resembles Yoruba carvings in the segmentation, division and repetition of his compositions; conceptually, it reflects this influence in the emphasis on transformation and balance, as well as its embodiment of dualities such as the earthly and the spiritual, past and present, industry and agriculture. Early works such as Dreams of the Abiku Child (1967) make allusion to concepts or figures in Yoruba cosmology and mythology, such as the abiku (devil child), and the orisha Osun. However, Twins Seven Seven also described his work as "contemporary Yoruba traditional art", not only paying homage to the influence of his cultural background but also to noting his responsiveness to current events and the postcolonial experience.

Some of his early work was influenced by his reading a copy of Amos Tutuola's book My Life in the Bush of Ghosts that was gifted to him by Georgina Beier. However, as he progressed as an artist, Twins Seven Seven focused more on imagery based on Yoruba folklore and his own dreams.

He attempted to avoid exposing himself to other painters who could potentially influence his unique individual painting style. Upon his first visit to the United States, he refused to attend a Picasso show, stating: "No, I don't want to risk being influenced by anyone else. All I am doing is in me already. I am not going to sit down in a studio and learn to mix colors like an European painter."

In 1972, Twins Seven Seven taught in the US at Merced College in California and at the Haystack Mountain Crafts School, Deer Isle. He taught at the Ile Ife Black Humanitarian Center in North Philadelphia in the early 1970s along with Barbara Bullock and Charles Searles, whom he influenced.

He was in line to become King of Ibadan upon which he would be named Osuntoki II. However, he first had to become the head of his clan, Mogaji. When the old Mogaji died, Twins Seven Seven was elected by his family to take his place, but the coronation kept being pushed back, and he died before he could assume this position.

In July 1982, he survived a car crash — although an erroneous radio announcement of his death was made after he was pulled unconscious from the wrecked vehicle — and was subsequently given an artificial hip and confined to bed for 18 months.

In the 1990s his work appeared in major exhibitions in Spain, Finland, Mexico, the Netherlands, England, Germany, and the US. Around this time, he also bought land in the village of Sekola, planning to turn it into a Yoruba-themed park and tourist destination entitled "Paradise Resort," but it never came to fruition.

In 2000, he moved to Philadelphia, where he hoped to permanently settle, but he was robbed, evicted, and fired from multiple menial jobs. At this low point, George Jevremovic mounted an exhibition for him in 2005 for a generous amount of money and gave him a space to work. He worked here until 2008 when a lack of money prompted his return to Nigeria.

Honours he received included Nigerian chieftaincy titles, such as when in January 1996, he was named the Ekerin-Basorun and the Atunluto of Ibadan. In December 1996, he was named the Obatolu of Ogidi.

He was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace on 25 May 2005 "in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of dialogue and understanding among peoples, particularly in Africa and the African Diaspora".

Twins Seven Seven died aged 67 in Ibadan on 16 June 2011, following complications from a stroke.

Twins Seven Seven's work was included in the 2015 exhibition We Speak: Black Artists in Philadelphia, 1920s-1970s at the Woodmere Art Museum.

Our government is irreducibly committed to job creation, youths and human capital development, to underscore this out of the six pillars of our administration, youth empowerment and human capital development occupy number two and three respectively.

“As part of effort to achieve this, I recently launched the Ekiti Digital Skill Academy in February this year with the distribution of laptops to 100 youths as part of our move to upscale digital education for job creation and the programme targets 500 youths to be given laptops and other devices to facilitate their learning experience.

“Similarly, we just secured the Federal Government’s approval for Ekiti Knowledge Zone to become a Free Trade Zone. This is critical requirement for the zone to get the needed investment inflow for the development of the zone. For us EKZ is conceived to be a digital innovation, technology and creative hub.

EKSU to witness institutional reforms – Gov. Oyebanji.

EKSU to witness institutional reforms – Gov. Oyebanji.
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has assured the people of the state that Ekiti Stste university, Ado- Ekiti would soon witness remarkable institutional reforms in view of the capacity and integrity of members of the University’s newly inaugurated Governing Council.

The Governor, who stated this on Tuesday while receiving members of the Alumni Association and Board of Trustees of the institution in his office, said he is convinced that the lost glory of the university would be restored soon as all hands would be on deck to ensure things moved in the right direction.

He stressed the need for all stakeholders of the university to come together to chart a way forward that would take the university out of the woods and reposition it among the world acclaim institutions of higher learning.

Governor Oyebanji, who is also the Grand Patron of the association and the visitor to the institution charged the alumni leaders to always reach out to their affluent members in position of authority within and outside the country to give back to their alma mater in order to have a large pool of resources to execute projects for the good of the institution instead of waiting endlessly for government subvention that may not be adequate.

While calling for a multi-faceted approach to resolve the mirage of problems facing the institution, the Governor also assured the association that he would liaise with alumni members in the National Assembly to see what they can do to invest in the university by embarking on projects that would enliven the institution.

“EKSU will definitely rise again, we will reclaim the lost glory, support will surely come, but there are some conditions to be met, I believe that there must be institutional reforms, the process must be there before we put resources.

“I’m an Ambassador of the alumni association and I know that we have history to judge us, if we don’t do it now, we don’t know when an alumnus will be the Governor again, so we will do everything humanly possible to ensure that we don’t disappoint you.

“We have come to a point whereby we need a conclave of council, alumni association, BOT, government, the unions PTA to sit down and agree on acceptable plan for that university. All stakeholders must be on the table and we must adopt a resolution with clear timeline on what we are supposed to do. Government will take its own responsibilities, management will take its own. Whatever is referred to me as a government, I will do. If we don’t do that, we will be jumping on the same spot.

Six Months of Effective Governance: Appraising BAO's Approach to Transformational Leadership in Ekiti State.

Six Months of Effective Governance: Appraising BAO's Approach to Transformational Leadership in Ekiti State.
Good governance and maintaining citizens' trust are crucial for the progress and stability of any society. Within six months of mounting the governorship saddle on October 16, 2022, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has established a set of values, policies, and institutions that govern how power is wielded, decisions are taken, and resources are distributed in Ekiti state, leaving no aspect overlooked.

This involves ensuring that the rule of law is upheld, public institutions are transparent and accountable, the needs of all segments of the state are addressed, citizens have access to basic services and opportunities, and are properly represented in Government by valuing their choices and interest. This is evident in his recently formed committee on political appointments, which empowers citizens to have a say in the political process.

Governor Oyebanji possesses a keen understanding of citizens' needs, which informs his decision-making and actions and earns him a reputation as a leader who is genuinely invested in Ekiti Kete’s well-being.

His leadership style is characterized by strategic and transformational leadership, which has helped to foster a solid bond across party lines. He has also garnered strong support from relevant stakeholders in different sectors, with the ultimate goal of positioning Ekiti state as a center of attraction in terms of investment, education, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure development, and technological advancement.

In assessing Mr. Governor’s developmental strides in the past six months, it’s imperative to first appraise his visionary leadership, which hinged on creating an inspiring vision for the future of the state and communicating it clearly to the citizens. This has helped create a sense of purpose and direction for the state while inspiring citizens to work towards achieving the set vision. This vision cuts across the six pillars of his administration.

Also, it’s necessary to laud BAO’s Ethical leadership which places a premium on integrity and ethical conduct. He leads by example, and this has no doubt helped build and maintain trust among citizens.

Similarly, BAO has been a staunch advocate of innovation and creativity in governance. He knows that the world is evolving fast, and only those who can keep up with the changes can remain relevant. This has enabled him to introduce innovative policies and programs that have transformed the state.

Mr. Governor has taken several steps toward improving the state's power supply and infrastructure development. Amongst these efforts was the approval of a new 33KV feeder line from Omisanjana 132KV TCN Substation to link Ilawe Ekiti and Erijiyan Ekiti respectively. This new connection will increase the power supply to the Gossy water factory and Resort center in Ikogosi Ekiti. The move, combined with the establishment of an airport in the state, is part of the overall vision of the current administration to transform Ekiti into the premier medical tourism destination in West Africa. This vision includes providing first-class medical services at Afe Babalola Multi-system Hospital, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, and Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji's administration has invested in the healthcare sector with the ongoing primary health development programme across the state particularly in rural areas where access to health facilities was poor. Oyebanji has renovated medical facilities in the state, including 12 hospitals which include three State Specialist Hospitals and nine General Hospitals. His administration is committed to enhancing healthcare services to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the State. In his magnanimity and love for people living with disabilities, he approved a free quarterly health workshop for them in fulfillment of one of his campaign promises to run an all-inclusive government without living any segment of the state behind.

Within a mere six months of his inauguration, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has launched an extensive initiative to construct and renovate road networks throughout Ekiti state. These locations include the Ilawe-Ikere Road, Ikole township roads, Ado-Ilawe Ekiti Road, Ilawe/Igede Ekiti Road, Aramoko/Igede Road, Ayegunle/Ijurin/ Iloro Road, Ifaki/Ido road, and several other critical routes within the capital city, Ado.

Furthermore, Oyebanji’s commitment to changing the face of education in Ekiti State deserves recognition. For instance, he recently inaugurated the governing councils of Ekiti State University (EKSU) and Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology (BOUESTI). Moreover, he revamped the Government Technical Colleges in the state, instituted the recruitment of teachers into the State's Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and launched the Ekiti State Digital Skill Academy program, which will train over 500 youths in technology, soft/life skills, mentorship, community outreach, and capstone projects.

Additionally, the state government partnered with the World Bank to distribute laptops to 35 secondary schools in Ekiti state through the Adolescent Girls' Initiative For Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project. This project aims to revitalize dilapidated school buildings, purchase computers, provide safe spaces, and train teachers and students in digital and life skills with an emphasis on girl-child education.

The Governor has also taken steps to promote agriculture in the state, initiating a project to provide fertilizers and other farm inputs to farmers in the state. The farmers, particularly those in rural areas, will witness a surge in agricultural produce thereby, mitigating hunger, poverty, and malnutrition.

In addition to his efforts in various sectors, Governor Oyebanji has also approved the payment of gratuities to retirees and the 2019 promotion arrears for both state and local government workers.

By leveraging these tools of transformational leadership, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has been able to achieve good governance and sustain citizens' trust in his six months of leadership saddle in the state. His leadership style has enabled him to build bridges between different segments of the state, creating an enabling environment for economic growth and development, and ultimately improving the quality of life of citizens in the state.

I want people who are ready to work in my cabinet, Governor Oyebanji tells Committee on appointments.

I want people who are ready to work in my cabinet, Governor Oyebanji tells Committee on appointments.
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has stated that the people who would make his cabinet are those who are ready to work and sacrifice for the State.

Governor Oyebanji, who stated this on Monday during the inaugural meeting of the Committee on Political Appointments, urged members of the committee to look for competent hands who are of impeccable character and who are reafu to work and also sacrifice for the state.

He said it was imperative to make the would be appointee know that they are coming in to work and to sacrifice for the progress of the state and not to see political office as an opportunity for self-aggrandisement, or self-enrichment or an avenue to lazy around and lord things over the people in their communities.

Instead, he said he needed people who will come in and soak themselves in the work and would be ready to make necessary sacrifice for the progress and prosperity of the state.

The Governor at the meeting, recalled that the idea of the committee arose from his promise to the people during the electioneering that the people of the state would have input in the choice of those who would govern them as he believed in government of inclusion.

“Out of the feedback we got from our members then is the fact that they want to be part and parcel of the choice of the team that will govern them and since this is government of inclusion, so, the leadership decided that a committee should be put in place to interact with stakeholders across the state within the party, outside the party and every other interests you can bring on board to discuss with them and come up with names of men and women and youths that exhibit competence, character, integrity, compassion and selflessness.

“And part of the novel initiatives of the party is to ensure that the youth sector is represented and that is why you have one of our youth leaders as a member of the committee. He said.
