The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has appealed to Nigerians to be more patient with the administration of President Bola Tinubu as he works to solve the myriad of challenges facing the nation.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, stated this after his first visit to the State House, Abuja to congratulate President Tinubu and pledge support to the success of the administration.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting with the President, Okoh observed that the President, since assuming office, has shown himself to be sensitive to the situations facing Nigerians and has since been taking steps to find solutions to the challenges.

He noted that Nigerians, including the Christian community, have been noticing the President’s efforts to set the country back on the right path, adding that the current challenges were as a result of many years build, which he said will take some time to sort out.

“Sincerely, what we found out is that the President is sensitive to all these challenges that we have. He’s aware, and we see him making very positive steps, even from the beginning of his administration by the way, he has made appointments so far. ⁣

“He has come with a great sense of inclusiveness. And Nigerians have a sense of belonging as Nigerians and in this government and I tell you that his pronouncements so far and his body language have increased the confidence of Nigerians in Nigeria and we believe that, given the chance, he will do a lot more and we are praying that the Lord will strengthen his hand, to be able to do more and turn around the fortunes of this country.⁣

“We know that there are a lot of challenges, but what we tell our people is that this is just the beginning of this administration and Nigeria is big and what we face now started not just today. It started many years back, and it will take a while to turn around these things. 

“But the important thing is that there is an intentional step that the President has taken, and is taken to reverse the trend of events, especially in the area of governance, we see it very clearly and we see the effort is making towards securing this nation. 

“So we ask the Nigerians who are watching and those people who seem to have lost hope, to not lose hope, but to have patience and persevere, though it is night, we know that a new dawn is just in the horizon,” he said.

President Bola Tinubu has explained reasons for the size of his cabinet, saying mounting too many ministries on one person in the name of saving costs will only lead to non-performance and inefficiency. 

Tinubu spoke when he received a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at the State House Abuja.

The President, who was telling the visitors of his approach to governance, also tasked the clerics to give Nigerians the right messages, noting that without sermons on understanding, perseverance and hope to their congregations, they will not be helping the nation.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu also said his administration will not relent in addressing corruption and other vices because it is a sacred duty to ensure that the country is set right for the prosperity of all Nigerians.

While emphasising the role of faith leaders in fostering unity and peace in the country, he called on Christian leaders to support the administration’s ongoing fight against corruption by encouraging Nigerians to have a change of mindset on money-related matters.

“We have no other country but Nigeria. If you do not preach the sermon of understanding, tolerance, perseverance, and hope for Nigerians, you are doing damage to the country, and nobody will help us repair it.  

“Let us dialogue because public condemnation of a nation is not what makes any citizen a good one. We must admonish Nigerians to have a change of mindset and not to make money our god or master. I believe we will get to the Promised Land, and Nigeria will flourish.

“We are here to listen, and if you observe any inadequacies in my government, let us know. I am here today because of your prayers and the will of God Almighty. What I have challenged myself to do each day is to be fair to all Nigerians. 

“I have had a number of criticisms, including the rationale behind the size of my cabinet. If you want efficient, mobile, and resourceful people, we have to give people a load they can carry. If you combine too many ministries because you want to save money, you will have a future of non-performance and no results.

“Nigeria needs to turn the corner to grow, and we must give people challenges they can manage, and that is what we are doing,” the President stated.

Archbishop Okoh urged President Tinubu not to relent in his efforts to provide good governance by ensuring security, inclusivity and peaceful co-existence.

“You have extended a hand of fellowship to us, and we embrace you and your family with the love of Christ and promise to partner with you in nation-building, for the task is quite daunting. You will not stumble, and you will not fall. 

“We believe that you have the sagacity to give leadership in battling our challenges and in turning around the fortunes of our nation, Nigeria, within a short time. You have shown that you are a listening leader, and we appreciate this.

“CAN has maintained an active presence at all levels from the national to the grassroots, and we have remained non-partisan. You will always find our association as a ready and willing partner in nation-building,” Okoh said.

The statement said the funeral ceremony would commence on Thursday, February 15 with a winning soul crusade at MKO Abiola Democracy Park while Jumat Service would hold on Friday, February 16 at the Akure Central. Mosque.

It said the funeral service would move to Ibadan on February 17 for Loyola Day of Tributes at Loyola College Hall and the OAU Night of Tributes.

Other activities to hold in Ibadan include the NBA Tribute Session, Service of Songs/ Night of Tribute, Commendation Service and to be ended with a private viewing at Akeredolu’s residence.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, on Monday launched WACOT Rice Limited’s 2024 dry season farming inputs distribution to out-grower farmers in Argungu, Kebbi State.

A statement said the out-grower programme seeks to increase the quality of smallholder farmer livelihoods via access to required agri-input financing, capacity-building in yield enhancement techniques, and good agronomic practices.

At the launch, Kyari inspected WACOT Rice’s state-of-the-art 250,000-ton mill, set to be inaugurated later this year. Expressing his satisfaction with the initiative, he emphasised its potential to significantly boost farmers’ productivity and income.

Commending WACOT Rice and its parent company, Tropical General Investments Group, Kyari highlighted their commitment to empowering farmers across various value chains nationwide.

He specifically noted TGI’s substantial investments in agriculture and other sectors, affirmed the alignment of the efforts with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope eight-point agenda

He said, “I am impressed with what I have seen. This project is heading in the right direction, utilising the farm produce from local farmers for raw materials.

“The government stands ready to support initiatives like WACOT Rice, recognising their potential to create jobs and improve livelihoods. As part of our strategic focus, we are actively considering creating farmland for WACOT Rice, further enhancing our agricultural capabilities.”

The Borno State Government has constituted a 10-man committee to investigate the causes of conflicts between farmers and herders across the state with a view to addressing them.

The committee will, among others, “re-establish the defunct cattle routes and identify grazing reserves which have not been adequately utilised.”

Governor Babagana Zulum announced the constitution of the committee at the Nigeria-Cameroon border town of Gamboru town on Monday.

He said the constitution of the committee was one of the necessary measures the state government was taking to prevent farmer-herder clashes across the state.

Zulum said the committee would be chaired by his Special Adviser, Tijjani Guzamala, with representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, all emirate councils, Miyetti Allah, Alhaya Association and the Governor’s Office as members.

The governor was at Gamboru to distribute food items and N221.7m to over 67,454 families in the Lake Chad Basin Local Government Area of Gamboru-Ngala.

“Let me use this opportunity to announce a committee that will look into the farmers and herders conflicts in all 27 local government areas of Borno State,” said Zulum.

“The committee, among other issues, will re-establish the defunct cattle routes and identify grazing reserves which have not been adequately utilised,” he explained.

He assured that the committee’s recommendations would guide the government in addressing the root causes that lead to conflicts between farmers and herders across the state.

Zulum also brokered a truce between Fulani herders and farmers in Gamboru after weeks of tension and uncertainty that was already ripe for the eruption of violence.

While commending all parties for reaching a consensus during the meeting, Zulum urged people to shun all acts that could lead to violence.

“Borno is a state with agrarian communities. We have Fulanis, we have Shuwas, and we have Kanuris who are nomads as well. We have the same culture and the same tradition. Therefore, I urge all the people of Borno to be law-abiding and to ensure they live in peace with one another,” Zulum said.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Fulani herders and the farming community, as well as the senator representing Borno Central, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan, a House of Representative member, Bukar Talba, and traditional and community leaders in the LGA.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Monday, said he had presented the report of last Tuesday’s explosion at Dejo Oyelese Close, Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, Ibadan to President  Bola Tinubu.

This was as the  Minister of Solid Minerals Development,  Dele Alake, led a delegation of the Federal Government for an on-the-spot assessment to the site of the explosion.

It was reported that the explosion that rocked Adeyi Avenue around 7:30 pm last Tuesday killed five people, injured 77 people and damaged about 58 houses.

The President had earlier commiserated with the government and people of Oyo State following the incident, while he directed the National Emergency Management Agency to work with the state government to offer immediate and comprehensive relief to the victims.

Alake, during the visit,  expressed shock at the scale of devastation and unfortunate loss of lives, stressing that the disaster was man-made and regrettable.

“ I am here to convey Mr. President’s deepest sympathies to you and to assure you that the administration stands shoulder to shoulder with you in your efforts to get back to your normal lives and attain full recovery. Rest assured that succour that will ameliorate the impact of the tragic incident is underway.

“Let me assure the people of Oyo State that there will be full disclosure of the report of investigations and those found culpable will be made to face justice whilst mechanisms will be put in place to prevent a recurrence,” the minister said.

Briefing the minister on the state government’s rescue efforts, head of the state’s .

Makinde, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrenwaju, in Ibadan, said he was at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, at the weekend to present the report of the incident to the President.

“The governor appreciated the Presidency for its support following the incident, noting that the state government would do everything possible to provide succour to victims and to fish out and punish those behind the tragedy,” the statement read.

Makinde, also on his X handle, revealed that integrity tests were being conducted on about 230 properties around the scene of the explosion.

The properties, according to the governor, include 13 houses within 50 metres radius of the blast site, 40 houses within 100 metres radius, 122 houses within 200 metres radius and 53 houses within a 250 metres radius.

Makinde wrote, “The clinical psychologist has commenced counselling for victims of the incident at the Emergency Operations Centre in Ibadan.

“The operations at ground zero have moved from search and rescue to recovery. Let me use this opportunity to thank the Nigerian Society of Engineers who have been carrying out structural integrity tests on about 230 properties around the site of the explosion; 13 houses within 50 metres radius of the blast site, 40 houses at 100 metres radius; 122 houses at 200 metres radius and 53 houses within a 250 metres radius.”

Makinde thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State “for releasing the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency to support us and for the assistance offered by the team led by Engineer Olatunde Akinsanya, the Director of Operations.”

“The security agencies are still investigating the incident and an update on their investigation will be publicised. Our administration remains committed to supporting all victims of this unfortunate incident and ensuring that everyone responsible is brought to book,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, the President of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Dele Ayanleke, told newsmen on Monday, that the association did not know the miners whose explosives were said to have caused the Ibadan explosion.

Ayanleke also blamed the incident on a lack of enforcement by regulators and agencies involved in the mining licensing process.

He said, “The government registered and licensed organisations to deal with explosives whenever you obtain a mining title, especially a small-scale mining lease or quarry lease. You are entitled to apply for the purchase of explosives but before then, you must apply for a permit to install a magazine, a special purposely-built storage for explosives. And once the approval is given, the construction must be supervised right from the foundation to the roofing by the Mines Inspectorate Department of the ministry, because they know the specifications and equipment to use and how to do it.

“Thereafter, anytime a miner wants to procure explosives, you must also go to the same ministry to obtain a permit stating the quantity you want at any point in time and they would give approval based on request every time you need it and this approval is copied to some other agencies like the Department of Security Services and the Anti-Bomb Squad of the Nigerian Police. They are usually aware of these dealings because before you can procure it from any licensed dealer, a bomb disposal expert must be available, who will accompany the materials from the point of purchase to your magazine.

“Anything outside of this is illegal, even at the mining site, a magazine is constructed far from where people stay just for safety purposes. There are rules, regulations and procedures. So, in this case, everything was flouted.”

The Federal Government on Monday said the Education Tax under the Federal Inland Revenue Service would serve as one of the funding sources for the recently established Student Loan Scheme.

It said the scheme would be fully automated to ensure zero human involvement in the application and processing of the loans to applicants.

“…that is why the education tax fund is one of the sources of funding that we will use to execute this programme,” said FIRS Chairman, Dr Zacch Adedeji, when he addressed State House Correspondents after briefing President Bola Tinubu on the impending launch of the scheme at the Aso Rock Villa on Monday.

Barely one week earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, revealed that the scheme was on track to go live in January 2024 as the President promised last October.

Adedeji, who spoke alongside the Executive Secretary of the Student Loan Board, Dr Akintunde Sawyerr, said channelling the education tax into the scheme is the administration’s way of being accountable to Nigerian taxpayers.

“This is in fulfilment of Mr President’s promise that we will make education accessible to all. This is one of the schemes where we will be applying the education tax that we collect.

“It is a way of being accountable to the taxpayer. Because the essence of education tax is to consolidate and restore education integrity and quality, in fulfilling that part of the Act, education tax fund is one of the sources of funding that we will use to execute this programme,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Scheme, Sawyerr, who gave his first public briefing on the programme said eligible applicants would route their requests through the loan App or website, affirming that the scheme would be devoid of human involvement.

He itemised the application process, saying prospective candidates must avail their JAMB registration number, Date of Birth, National Identification Number and Biometric Verification Number, amongst others.

“The applicant will go on to a portal, or they will engage with the app. They will have to put in certain pieces of information that make them eligible, such as their JAMB number and, of course, the tie-in to their date of birth.

“Further pieces of information include their NIN, which confirms that they are Nigerians. This loan scheme is being paid for by Nigerian taxpayers. So, it’s for Nigerians and the NIN helps verify and qualify them as such.

“Their BVN is for financial inclusion because this scheme in itself will, at some point, be able to empower students, so we need to know they have bank accounts. We need to know where their accounts are to be able to access those accounts.

“It will also have their matric number and admission number so that we can firmly establish which institution they are going to because one of the key elements of this is that once we have received applications and those applications are approved, the fees or the tuition requirements in terms of financials will be transferred directly to the institution. That in itself has benefits for the institution,” The Executive Secretary explained.

While likening the loan to a bridge linking the desire for further education and the funds to do so, Sawyerr explained that the FG was keen to ensure that young Nigerians do not fail to acquire tertiary education simply because they lack the funds.

He said, “The intention behind it is to ensure that the reason for not being able to go on and further your education at a tertiary level is not for the lack of finance. This law seeks to bridge the gap between the desire to study and the capacity to go further. It seeks to bridge that gap that is created by lack of finance and funding.”

The Loan Chief explained that the scheme would enable Nigerians to pick a career trajectory of their choice rather than being forced into other paths because they were unable to acquire vital education.

He also affirmed that the loan would help to stem the dangerous journey undertaken by Nigerian youths across the Sahel to Europe in search of a better life.

“Some of the opportunities provided by the scheme include enrolling intending students in teacher training programmes and vocational skills.

“The program provides opportunities for Nigerian students who want to go into the academic side and get a university degree or perhaps want the technical side and acquire some vocational skills and also in the teacher training space.

“This intervention will affect the lives of many Nigerian youths because that’s usually the bracket to further their education. It will…enable us to intervene and support families, particularly the needy,” he explained.

The Executive Secretary disclosed that the school fees for successful applicants would be transferred directly to their institutions.

On June 12, 2023, President Bola Tinubu signed the Student Loan Bill into law. The move was in “fulfilment of one of his campaign promises to liberalise funding of education,” a member of the then Presidential Strategy Team, Dele Alake, told journalists. The law enables indigent students to access loans at interest-free rates.

Declaring the 29th session of the annual Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja open on October 23, 2023, the President said, “By January 2024, the new Students Loan Programme must commence. To the future of our children and students, we’re saying no more strikes!”
