First Lady Charges Armed Forces To Encourage More Women Enlistment.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has charged the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to encourage women to join the military.

The First Lady gave the charge in her address read by the wife of the vice president, Hajia Nana Shettima, at the Defence Headquarters’ one-day Gender Mainstreaming Conference with the theme, Building Capacity Through Gender Mainstreaming to Meet Security Challenges.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson to the First Lady, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady, while commending the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for organising the programme, acknowledged that the event was timely.

She said: “The theme is apt because it is about shaping a safer, better, and more equitable world for all.

“I commend the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for accepting the gender mainstreaming concept in line with the Global Best Practice and the UN Security Council Resolution 1325.”

The First Lady added that security challenges in the nation have become increasingly complex.

“Addressing these challenges effectively requests innovative and comprehensive approaches and gender mainstreaming stands as a powerful tool in our arsenal.

“Gender mainstreaming is now much more than a charity and a policy agenda, this is a fundamental issue about the way we perceive and address security challenges.”

She further said it is recognised that security encompasses not only military strength but also the protection of human rights, economic stability, social and environmental sustainability.

The First Lady said it requires a collective effort to address security issues and advance gender mainstreaming.

She added: “We can start by ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into security policies and strategies, encouraging more women to join and progress within the forces.

“We must promote women’s participation and leadership in security institutions, peace negotiations, conflict resolution efforts and bringing a more reconciliatory perspective into negotiations.”

The First Lady, however, added that education and training programmes should include gender sensitivity and awareness amongst security personnel.

She further said that women should not be discriminated against for getting married or bearing children while in the military.

She advised that more cooperation is required towards the elimination of gender-based violence within security forces.

“Through the Renewed Hope Initiative project, we have strengthened women’s empowerment by letting women have access to training and education. Additionally, we have equipped the women with laptops and grants to support their educational and professional pursuits.

“This is because we believe that when you empower a woman, you empower a community and inevitably a nation. We therefore hope that the leadership within the Armed Forces will extend this dialogue beyond the confinement of this conference and empower women and ranks and their ranks”, she said.

The Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and the Minister of Defence Alhaji Mohammed Baduru applauded the First Lady and agreed to look into her recommendations.

Old, new naira notes remain legal tender, CBN reaffirms.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday restated that all naira denominations remain legal tender.

It directed its branches to continue issuing adequate quantities of both old and redesigned naira notes.

CBN, in a statement by its Director of Corporate Communications, Dr Isa AbdulMumin, said: “Our attention has again been drawn to reports of a scarcity of cash across some major cities in the country despite assurances of sufficient cash stocks in all locations across the country.

“There have also been reports of anxiety among some members of the public over the legality or otherwise of old Naira banknotes.

“For the avoidance of doubt, while reiterating that there are sufficient banknotes across the country for all normal economic activity, we wish to state unambiguously that every banknote issued by the CBN remains legal tender and should not be rejected by anyone, as stipulated in Section 20(5) of the CBN Act, 2007.

“Accordingly, branches of the CBN across the country have been directed to continue to issue different denominations of old and redesigned banknotes in adequate quantities to deposit money banks (DMBs) for onward circulation to bank customers.

“We wish to restate that all denominations of banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) remain legal tender.

“In line with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act, 2007, no one should refuse to accept the Naira as a means of payment.

“Consequently, members of the public are advised to accept all CBN-issued banknotes currently in circulation and guard against panic withdrawals.

“We reaffirm that there is sufficient stock of currency notes to facilitate normal economic activities.”

To further reduce the reliance on physical cash, the CBN called for the adoption of alternative payment methods.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso will brief the House of Representatives on key policy issues today.

Spokesman of the House, Akin Rotimi, said in a statement: “The Sectoral Debate Series is intended to provide political appointees and key government officials an opportunity to brief members about the policies and programmes of their respective MDAs.

“Citizens and indeed our constituents are welcome to follow these sessions via our live broadcast platforms to gain perspectives on critical policies that shape the various sectors of our national life.”

Appeal Court declares Lalong winner of Plateau South senatorial election.

Appeal Court declares Lalong winner of Plateau South senatorial election.

The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday upheld the judgment of the tribunal which declared the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong the winner of the Plateau South Senatorial election, the Punch Newspaper is reporting.

Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was announced the winner of the 25 February election with 148,844 votes.

However, Mr Lalong, who scored 91,674 to emerge as the runner-up in the election contested the victory of Mr Bali on the ground that the PDP did not have a proper party structure and, therefore, could not file candidates for the elections.

The Election Petition Tribunal had agreed with Mr Lalong that the PDP, having no structure could not have presented candidates for the election and held that the votes scored by Mr Bali during the election were wasted.

However, the three-man panel of the Appeal Court led by Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu, held that the matter was both a pre and post-election matter, adding that the tribunal made the correct call.

She held that the PDP was wrong not to have obeyed subsisting orders asking that a new congress should be conducted in the state.

“Section 287 of the Nigerian Constitution said all are expected to observe orders of the court. The order was in the realm. It is binding all persons. It is immutable and until it is set aside and must be complied with.

“This issue is hereby resolved against the appellant. Invalidly nominated candidates cannot attract lawful votes. This appeal fails. The tribunal judgment is hereby affirmed,” she held.
