Speaking at the inauguration of the 2023 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu stressed the necessity for Nigeria to undertake significant reforms in order to gain respect on the international stage. He acknowledged that these reforms might be challenging initially but are crucial for the nation's growth.

President Tinubu highlighted the long-term benefits of these changes, stating, "Our efforts extend beyond us and our time. We are custodians of Nigeria's future, responsible for leaving behind a prosperous and thriving nation for generations to come."

Expressing concern about the country's unsustainable level of external debt servicing, President Tinubu pointed out that allocating 90% of revenue to service these debts would lead to detrimental consequences. He emphasized, "Continuing on this path is perilous; we must take the difficult steps needed to awaken our nation from its slumber and earn respect on the global stage."

Drawing attention to the importance of a collective change in mindset, the former Lagos State governor encouraged Nigerians to take responsibility for the nation's greatness. "We possess the potential and resources required to thrive. To overcome our challenges, we must reshape our attitudes and thinking. Dwelling on the past will not suffice; our determination and efforts will pave the way for a brighter future," he urged.

The crisis between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, took a new twist when the Department of State Services (DSS) denied Shaibu access to the governor.

Shaibu was one of the guests who attended the church service to mark the 32nd anniversary of the creation of Edo State.

At the event which held at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin, on Sunday, the deputy governor stood up to greet Obaseki, but a DSS operative blocked him just a few metres away.

As the service unfolded, Deputy Governor Shaibu, a guest at the event, took the opportunity to stand up and greet Governor Obaseki. However, an attentive Department of State Services (DSS) operative momentarily intervened, causing a slight pause. While the incident caught the attention of many, it was a testament to the commitment of security personnel to their duties.

Commenting on the situation, Chief Press Secretary Andrew Okungbowa emphasized that the incident was not orchestrated by Governor Obaseki, who was unaware of the unfolding events. He clarified that the security personnel were merely ensuring the safety of their principal, and as a public event, security measures were crucial.

Despite the brief interruption, Deputy Governor Shaibu used the occasion to reaffirm his unwavering loyalty to Governor Obaseki. He addressed the media, describing the governor as his elder brother and expressing his commitment to stand by him through thick and thin. Many Nigerians have expressed disappointment in receiving inadequate relief despite the allocation of significant funds. Consequently, skepticism has arisen regarding the government's commitment to addressing the needs of its citizens.

ASO Chlef on Aug. 19 lost the first leg of the encounter against Insurance by 0-1 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

The Algerian side, however, won the return leg, played at Mabrouki Salem stadium in Algeria by the same margin to end the game on 1-1 aggregate.

Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA) has celebrated over 200 physically-challenged children to mark the day of special needs children. General Manager of LASODA, Oluwadamilare Ogundairo, said the occasion was to give more credence to the government’s policy of inclusiveness.

He said: “This is a testimony of the government’s commitment to the THEMES+ Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s, where no one is left behind. Every year, we gather them from to celebrate them. It is important to give them a sense of belonging.

Guest speaker, Mrs. Bisola Olufolajimi, who spoke on ‘Embracing the Future Generation through Hygiene’, emphasised the need to protect the children from harm.

 She said: “Heath is wealth and hygiene is life. You are as clean as your life is, or the length of your life will be. We have been able to enlighten people here today on how children with disabilities should be kept safe via cleanliness at home, school or at the centres…’’

It is essential to ensure the areas they are kept are clean and protected from germs and bacteria which can cause infection and invariably death, because, children with disabilities tend to live longer and healthier in a safe environment.”

 Mrs. Olufolajimi stressed that food poisoning can happen when their food is not well cooked, stressing that taking care of their skin, oral health and washing of hands before serving them food is also very important.

She also called for consistent awareness and advocacy on the need to prioritise their health.

 A parent, Mrs. Oluchi Francis, said every child with disability needs support and must be catered for in terms of oral hygiene, food nutrition, medication and finance.

 Mrs. Francis, whose child has cerebral palsy, called for government’s intervention and proper observation, as well as provision of therapists to keep them alive.

Brace for flooding, NEMA warns Rivers, C/River, Anambra, 10 others states flood.

Thirteen states have been put on the red alert for imminent flooding. The states on the banks of River Benue are: Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa.

The alert was issued by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) following a notification from the Foreign Affairs Ministry that Cameroon plans to open the Lagdo Dam.

Besides the impending flooding, the agency warned that  Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba dams could overflow between now and the end of October.

The situation, according to NEMA may be worsened owing to the release of water from the Cameroonian dam.

In the letter signed by Ambassador Umar Salisu, the Director, African Affairs, the ministry urged the necessary agency to step up efforts to mitigate damages.

The envoy also urged the agency to sensitization of the areas that may be impacted by the opening of the Dam.

The statement reads: “I have the honour to inform that the ministry is in receipt of a note verbale from the High Commission of Republic of Cameroon informing that Cameroonian officials have resolved to open the flood gate of Lagdo Dam in the Benue River in days ahead due to heavy rainfall around the dam catchment area in the Northern Cameroon.

“According to the note, it is pertinent to note that when the release of water becomes necessary, the authorities of Lagdo Dams will be releasing only modulated variable small amount of water at a time in order to mitigate and avoid damages that the release may cause along River Benue Basin in both Cameroon and Nigeria.

“In view of the above, it would be appreciated if the esteemed agency takes all the necessary proactive steps and actions that will mitigate the damage as well as sensitive the people living in such areas for vigilance and all necessary precautions.”
